The race to rescue Florida’s diseased corals

https://www.washingtonpost.com/climate-solutions/interactive/2021/florida-rescue-coral-reef/

Butterfly Pavilion is helping lead this important project to save the Florida reef tract. This is just another example of global impact we're having as the world's leading invertebrate zoo. #tinygiants #scienceandenvironment #sustainability #AZA #cultureforall

Several years ago, a mysterious coral disease began decimating the Florida Reef. The only way to save the animals from extinction? An unprecedented mission to relocate them to facilities across the country.

Happy throw back Thursday! Look at the speed of this Jumping spider!!

Jumping spiders have exceptional eyesight, which makes them amazing hunters! When they detect prey, the jumping spider produces a line of silk that it attaches to a nearby spot, and then jumps on its prey. The line of silk is used as tether, so the spider doesn’t fall.

What are YOU having for lunch? 😋

Happy throw back Thursday!

Wait that’s not a flower…? #tbt when this Orchid mantis was enjoying a cricket for a snack! Nom nom nom 😋

These beautiful invertebrates are deadly to prey because their unique camouflage helps them disappear into their natural environments. Due to their appearance, pollinators will often pick them over flowers because they are such convincing nectar sources!

Should we show more behind the scenes content?? Comment down below! :).

We’re deeply saddened to share the loss of “Sunshine”, our red-footed tortoise (Chelonoidis carbonarius). Sunshine was estimated to have lived 45 years, exceeding her life expectancy in the wild, and she spent over two decades in the Wings of the Tropics conservatory.

Over the last several months, Sunshine showed a steep decline in health and quality of life reflective of her advanced age and did not respond to medical treatment. On Friday, July 30th, the difficult decision for humane euthanasia was made by her keepers in conjunction with the recommendations of Sunshine’s veterinarian team.

In her long life, Sunshine got to meet so many people – and everyone who got to meet Sunshine fell instantly in love. She was full of charisma and could often be found snuggling under the warm basking lights of her house with the large hermit crabs who live in Wings of the Tropics. She also enjoyed her daily walks around the tropical rainforest, where she foraged for her favorite snack, hibiscus flowers. She delighted many of us with an unforgettable happy dance when receiving shell scratches and warm baths. Sunshine was a beloved member of Butterfly Pavilion and will be missed by every guest, volunteer, intern, and staff member who spent time with her.♥️
