Today's #WildcatWednesday Alumni Spotlight is Sharon Anderson!

Sharon is a 1986 graduate of Wayne State College, with a bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Communications.

While attending Wayne State College, Sharon worked live on both radio and TV stations on campus. She also taught an aerobics class (backed by the WSC business fraternity) twice a week, and later on for Coach Chapman's football spring training. Yeah, it was the 80s!

After graduating, Sharon worked at a television reporting internship at KTTC in Rochester, Minnesota and eventually went full-time for 4 years. Sharon has amazing 19-year-old twins heading out into the world, and they are smart and kind! She also now works in event and conference planning. She’s done everything from payroll to building registration websites to operating programs in places like Portugal, the Dominican Republic, and the Caribbean.

What did you love best about Wayne State College?
The friends I made, the small beautiful campus, and the fact that I got to get really hands-on in my major.

Today's #WildcatWednesday Alumni Spotlight is Amy Miller!

Amy is a 2002 graduate of Wayne State College, with a bachelor’s degree in Sociology and minor in Criminal Justice.

While attending Wayne State College, Amy was involved in Criminal Justice Association, Sociological Association, Intramurals, Rugby, Student Activities Board, Alpha Lambda Delta, and Honors Program.
After graduating with her bachelor’s degree, Amy moved to Lincoln to attend UNL Law School.

Amy graduated law school in 2005, became partner in her law firm, then started her own firm. She is currently the Wayne County Attorney, City of Wayne Attorney, and runs her own private practice, all while raising four kids under the age of 10.

What did you love best about Wayne State College?
The small town atmosphere. I felt safe in the community, and professors knew our names.

What is something most people don't know about you?
I didn't apply for any jobs after law school, except here in Wayne. I knew I wanted Wayne to be my home, and I moved back after law school, started my career, and never left!

Due to the continuing COVID-19 pandemic and Wayne State’s commitment to provide a safe and welcoming community for our students, staff, and faculty, the Wayne State Foundation has made the decision to cancel/postpone all alumni events for Homecoming 2020. While disappointing, we know this is the most responsible choice for protecting our students and community. Visit https://www.wsc.edu/news/article/554/homecoming_cancelations_postponements_and_schedule_changes to see updates and future plans for our Homecoming events.

Several events have been postponed for spring or the next Homecoming celebration. Others have been canceled or modified.

Today's #WildcatWednesday Alumni Spotlight is Stephanie Bourek-Hoyt!

Stephanie is a 1996 and 2006 graduate of Wayne State College, with a bachelor’s degree in K-12 Vocal Music Education and master’s degree in K-12 School Counseling.

After graduating with her bachelor’s degree, Stephanie started her teaching career in Churdan, IA and Geneva, NE teaching K-12 vocal music. In 2000, Stephanie just finished her 20th year teaching at Columbus Public Schools.

Stephanie chose to go back to WSC to pursue her master’s in school counseling, as she had many private voice lessons who needed someone to talk to and thought she should get educated on counseling to help her students better. Although Stephanie still teaches music, the counseling degree has helped her be a better social/emotional teacher as well as being an integral member of the behavior support team at school.
In 2005, Stephanie received the Distinguished Educator Award from the Columbus Education Association. She is also the Director of Elementary and General Music for the Nebraska Music Education Association and on the board of directors for the Friends of Music.

What did you love best about Wayne State College?
I loved that WSC was small enough that you knew your teachers and fellow classmates. It was bigger than my high school but I was never just a number at WSC. I feel privileged to have been a member of the WSC Concert Choir under the direction of Cornell Runestad, so many of my best memories come from choir class, concerts and tours. It was such an honor to have been in his choir and I learned so many integral parts to music from my time learning in the music department. We toured to Denver, Minneapolis, Chicago, Black Hills and Carnegie Hall in NYC. I think the best feeling was being in the choir at Carnegie singing our songs with Dr. Runestad in his final concert, so powerful!

Jessica is a 2016 graduate of Wayne State College, majoring in Early Childhood Inclusive Education.

After graduation, Jessica started working for Elkhorn Public Schools, the same school district she student taught at. Since then, Jessica has had the opportunity to teach in two countries, Italy and Thailand.

What Jessica loved most about WSC were the smaller class sizes and close relationships that were developed.

What is something most people don't know about you?
Most people don't know that my favorite animal is an elephant, and living in Thailand I had the honor to see them in the wild and was able to get in the water and bathe/feed them.

Hobbies / other interests?
My hobbies and/or interests include: Traveling, playing tennis, concert sand live music, watching sports-Go Pack Go (huge packers fan) as well as the Huskers of course, working out (maintaing good health is extremely important to me), I enjoy reading and soaking up some vitamin sea (aka the beach), anything outdoors I enjoy!

Today's #WildcatWednesday Alumni Spotlight is Raeanna Carlson!

Raeanna is a 2019 graduate of Wayne State College, with a Masters in Curriculum and Instruction/Instructional Leadership and English Education.
One thing she loved best about WSC is how her advisor, Dr. Newcomb really pushed her.

After receiving her master’s degree, Raeanna has continued to work at Niobrara Public Schools as an English teacher using my master's to teach three dual credit courses.

Raeanna just got married in May of 2020. Congratulations!

Today's #WildcatWednesday Alumni Spotlight is James Zanker!
James is a 1986 graduate of Wayne State College, majoring in Marketing with a minor in Music.

After graduating from Wayne State College, James moved to Fort Wayne, IN and enjoyed a very rewarding 13-year career in the Church Music Ministry. In 1999, James made a change to marketing long-term care health insurance. He is the owner of Sound Financial Solutions.

James is married to best friend Kyle, his wife of 23 years. James is also fortunate to have directed two professional singing groups, the CHORDS Vocal Ensemble and the Unclouded Day Vocal Ensemble. With these two groups they have presented over 550 concerts and have recorded four CDs.

What did you love best about Wayne State College?
I enjoyed the smaller size of Wayne State. I had previously attended a large university in Iowa and always felt a bit "overwhelmed." Wayne State has a smaller, beautiful campus, smaller class sizes and, honestly, professors who care much more about their students. I also was a big fan of the campus library and chose to do most of my studying there!

What is your fondest memory about WSC?
My classmates, particularly in the music department - many with whom I am still close friends. And, it was at WSC where I meant the single most important musical influence and mentor in my life, Dr. Cornell Runestad.

Today's #WildcatWednesday Alumni Spotlight is Ashley (Petersen) Aden!

Ashley is a 2004 graduate of Wayne State College, majoring in Speech Communications/Corporate/Community/Public Relations and minoring in Human Resource Management.

After graduation, Ashley worked in Southern California at Wells Fargo Financial. After a short time, she moved back to Nebraska and accepted a position at Pacific Life, which at the time had just opened up a new headquarters in Omaha. In 2007, Ashley transitioned to financial services company, Equitable Advisors, and has been there for 12.5 years. She is currently managing the onboarding/licensing process for new financial advisors across 7 states.

Ashley and her husband, Erik have three awesome kids, whom are all very active with sports. They enjoy raising their family in Elkhorn and enthusiastically promote Wayne State College to their kids!

What did you love best about Wayne State College?
After touring various schools, I felt that the size and sense of community at WSC, along with a beautiful campus, was a perfect fit for me. It was easy to feel connected and make many friends and acquaintances who are still important to me today. The staff and advisors in the communications department ended up like family (the Whitts were amazing).

What is your fondest memory about WSC?
I have many fond memories, but a few that stick out are being on the 2004 Homecoming court and then giving the welcome speech at the December 2004 graduation ceremony. Through Teammates mentoring, I was able to attend a banquet with Tom Osborne on campus, and attend a Husker game in a Skybox with my mentee. I also have to mention the Three Doors Down concert on campus!
