Ekphrasis - “Description” in Greek. An ekphrastic poem is a vivid description of a scene or, more commonly, a work of art. Through the imaginative act of narrating and reflecting on the “action” of a painting or sculpture, the poet may amplify and expand its meaning.

Forgotten Art When we think of California writers, we go immediately to Didion, Steinbeck, and even to Fitzgerald, or crime writers like Raymond Chandler and James M. Cain. Off the beaten path, we think of Henry Miller, John Fante and Charles Bukowski. But no painters, aside from Hockey (an L.A. transplant) and Ed Ruscha readily come to mind in the same way, and yet, along the lines of Hopper and Grant, California had Emil Kosa, Jr. Kosa was the art director for 20th Century Fox from the 1930s into the 60s. He was the first to win an Oscar for special effects (Cleopatra, 1964). He was one of the key figures who created the famous Fox logo, and yet, Kosa’s relatively unknown passion was “California Scene Painting,” particularly in watercolors. To me, he should be as well known as O'Keefe, Paul Cadmus or Grant Wood.
Today I did 2 postcards to send out..... great idea, Carol!
