Weekly Update! We enjoyed our first week with our host child!

Activities:
Swimming, M-F Tae Kwon Do Camp (visited Water Park, Library, Zoo), Dinner at Russia House restaurant, 14th Birthday Celebration on Friday (cake and balloons at camp, dinner out with Happy Birthday sung by waitstaff, another cake, lots of presents), Mani-pedi, Visit to Adventure Park USA with my daughter and a Russian friend, sushi dinner (she got a hamburger, but did try and enjoy some cucumber sushi) :), Watching Russian dramas, Taking pictures

Family Interactions Relationships:
She is always smiling, singing, and giving us "two thumbs up". She has learned a few English words and quickly says "Thank you!" whenever she is given anything.

My daughter, has been practicing her Russian and they get along together. They tease each other and show each other funny photos. She also has a Russian friend who can call to help her communicate.

We are at Disney and Universal Studios this week. She is such a joy to have with us, we are all really enjoying the time together. Other than the food upsetting her stomach, she has settled in great and doesn't seem to be home sick. She is able to stay in touch with her sister through Ukrainian Instagram (or some tech thing) so that is helping her to not feel home sick. We might call the translator in a couple weeks just to make sure there aren't any questions or issues that are getting lost in translation. We are sweating in the Florida heat but having a ball.

Weekly update: Immediately discovered he is such a good eater. He will try anything and if he likes it, he typically has two to three servings. He is adjusting very well and is understanding the rules set forth in the house. She is a little more challenging. She is very stubborn and if she does not like she throws things and cries. Because she is older her brother sometimes mimics her - if she does not like a food item, neither does he. :)
Activities: Spent a day at Mystic Aquarium, went to a trampoline park and an indoor kids carousel. We also went to a lake for swimming and played games around the house.
Family Interactions Relationships: He is bonding with us; she is slowly warming up to us. :)
Hosting an orphan from Ukraine is a life changing experience!

Weekly summary: She is doing well; easily became comfortable and part of the family but I think this was easy due to knowing my daughters already. The kids enjoy being active together - swimming, bike rides and walks. She enjoys taking many pictures every day. She is eating well.
She had a dentist appointment for x-rays, cleaning and an initial exam. She has some dental issues and is in need of an oral surgeon (working on scheduling this). She did very well at the first dentist appointment. She was not nervous like my daughters had been ...

Activities: Swimming/Boogie Boarding at beach/ocean, Bike Riding/Walks daily, Bowling, Tubing on river, Walk with family downtown St. Augustine one evening, Watching movies & playing Wii games (family games)

Family Interactions Relationships:
She gets along very well with both "mom" and "dad". She is comfortable with both of us and jokes with us. She interacts and spends time with all of the family - especially at dinner time and in the evening. She spends the most time with my daughter during the day while I am working at home and my husband is at work. She gets along well with the others, but they both like to be active.

Weekly update: She stayed with us from Monday through Sunday. She is a very smart, respectful and interesting young lady. She is easy going. She is eating well. She tries very hard to use the English she knows and to learn new words. She was a pleasure to have visit with us.

Activities:
bowling, swimming/boogie boarding, walk through downtown St. Augustine, tubing on river, watching movies, helped cook dinner

Family Interactions Relationships:
She seems comfortable with both "mom" and "dad" in the family and gets along with all four girls in our home. Since my three daughters and our host child have known each other for years, I suspect she may have felt a little left out but she always was around the family and part of what we were doing. She got along very well with the other children.

Weekly Update: Everything is going well. Once we finally got her here! She has picked up right where she left off when she left at Christmas.
Activities: There has been lots of swimming. We took her to try sushi - she didn't love it. She has had the opportunity to meet lots of our family as they were in town visiting. Yesterday, she and I made borscht together, which she loves and we are now fans of it as well. She is also working on Rosetta Stone twice a week at the school where I work. Family Interactions Relationships:
She is very attached to me, my husband and my daughter. She
has also become good friends with our 6 year old granddaughter.
She also has reconnected with a friend, she made last trip.

Weekly summary:All is well. She is very neat and helpful. She likes helping with our 3 year old (puts on his shoes and buckles him in carseat, without us ever asking) She spends a lot of time with our daughter, they play plants vs.zombies, listen to music, do each other's make-up. I wish we could communicate better but we are trying!

Family Interactions Relationships: She smiles and laughs a lot. The kidsget along very well. Our son is very fond of her. She is helpful, neat and seems to be at ease. She makes up her bed and puts away her belongings (much neater than our other 2 teenagers!) Everything is going well and we look forward to the adventures we will take together in the next few weeks.

The International Day for Protection of Children is observed in many countries on June 1st, to honor children globally. This Day means not only the first day of summer, but something more for the children’s future.
On behalf of the Consulate General of Ukraine in New York I would like to congratulate your families and your children on this Children's Day.
In accordance with the principles proclaimed by the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child of 1989, the child, for the full and harmonious development of his or her personality, should grow up in a family environment, in an atmosphere of happiness, love and understanding.
The most important for your children is the fact that they are being raised in a family, which is the fundamental group of society and the natural environment for the growth and well-being. They receive your love and care to develop their personality, talents and mental and physical abilities to their fullest potential.

To those who would be able to participate in this year's Adoptive Family Weekend at Soyuzivka, I will include the invitation letter and itinerary.
We hope you will be able to join us and look forward to meeting your families and children.
The Consulate wishes your families to happily and cheerfully spend summer time together with your precious children!

The USA Summer Hosting program is now officially closed. We cannot add any more children to the travel list for this summer. Children in the summer short session 1 program will be arriving on June 17th! Please stay tuned for photos and videos!
If you missed your chance to host this summer, we will have another hosting program for three weeks during the December holidays! Cost is $2,900 per child (grants are available if hosting more than one child). NOW is the time to begin your "GoFundME' type of account - you can share with your families and friends. Many families have covered the entire cost of hosting through fundraising.
The children for the December program will be available at the end of August/September, families with completed applications typically see the children 2 weeks before the photos are made available to all potential host families.
Hosting is tax deductible. Please contact [email protected] for more information.

Amazing photo - One of our groups meeting at the airport. We get to watch, as child after child, after child met their future mother, future father, and future siblings for the first time. Children get off the plane, look through the crowd and find the family who chose them.
More than 60% of the children in this photo met their forever family less than ten minutes before this photo was taken!

We asked the children to dream big - if they could have anything in the world what would they want? Here are some of the responses:
Ride a bike, pet a turtle, see the ocean, go to the beach, have a little sister, play soccer, become a doctor, stop the war, have my own clothes/room, visit America, have a stuffed animal, fashion magazines, ice cream, and similar responses, and the number one response every single year? "Have a family".
CAN YOU MAKE THEIR DREAM COME TRUE?

You do NOT need to be interested in adoption in order to host - hosting gives the child a chance to see a loving family, experience solid relationships, experience the cultural exchange, get some good nutrition (you might be amazed at how tiny they are), have a vacation, get away from the war, and get more smiles, hugs and kisses than they may have had in a lifetime.

AND IMAGINE THIS: What if you hosted, and were not planning to adopt, you went to a BBQ with your friends/family. One of you high school classmates (from 20 +years ago!) attended the same BBQ and brought their two children with them. Your hosted child and your friend’s child play and hang out for a few hours – everyone compliments on how well they are getting along and how much fun they are having – and how much they look alike! You just smile and know you made the right decision to host this summer, proud you were able to help this child. Maybe a little sad because you know they are going back to Ukraine and back to the orphanage – you know this is temporary, but you still have hope… everyone leave the party and returns home. The next day you receive a phone call from your high school classmate and his wife – they were up all night – they couldn’t sleep – they needed to know more… You tell them everything you know and tell them to contact us. Hosting comes to an end and you take the child back to the airport and wipe a few tears as the child leaves go of your hand for what you know will be the last time. You drive home thinking of the fun and the challenges and process the events of the last four weeks.

Life goes on, you work, you live life as usual, time passes, you start to think about hosting again for next summer. Hmm, same child, different child, do we want to do it again? The holidays come and you receive a holiday photo card – it has a photo – of your old classmate and their THREE children! The text inside – “THANK YOU – You’ve changed our world”!

There is still time - we have a few children who are still waiting for a forever family - they are waiting for you!
Let us show you some photos and video... contact us at [email protected]
