On behalf of the entire membership of the United States Lifesaving Association I would like to extend our most sincere condolences for the loss of Norman Inferrera. The Cape May Beach Patrol has a tremendous history of drowning prevention because of lifeguards like Norman Inferrera and his passing is mourned by every lifesaver who answers the call to protect others.

The USLA recognizes that the beach lifeguard profession includes many risks to the safety of lifeguards in their role protecting others. Even so, no words can provide adequate comfort for the loss of a lifeguard who has given the ultimate sacrifice in that noble role.

Know that we grieve with you and offer our support to Norman’s family, friends, and fellow lifeguards.

The Virginia Beach Lifeguard Association lost a true waterman yesterday. John Kelly, a former VBLS Supervisor and Jersey Guard from many years back, passed unexpectedly. Most recently John was working with the VB Junior Lifeguard program instilling a love for all things ocean in dozens of future lifesavers. John was an educator at the high school and college level, an athlete and coach (basketball) at the high school, college and professional levels, and a loving father to his two daughters, Caroline and Catherine. He will be missed.

Jellyfish, chilly saltwater and waves: Virginia Beach Lifeguard Association races in the ocean offer unique challenge for swimmers.

Thank you Elizabeth for taking on the challenge and more for inspiring others to come enjoy what we know is a fantastic swim race meant for both competition and enjoying the beautiful natural resource we protect and play in everyday!

On July 11, not too many hours after Oceanfront revelers concluded their Saturday nights out, 136 people got ready to race a distance of 3,000 meters or one mile. The July race was part two of the Ocean Swim Series put on by the VBLA.

And we should add, it’s her first summer working on the beach too!! Nice job Avan!!

As we close the chapter on the 2020-21 Dolphin Athletic season, this athlete stands out as both a competitor and a leader across 3 seasons. Avan Johnson, a 3-sport varsity endurance star, finished the spring CHC Track & Field Season winning the 3200m TCIS Championship and finishing 2nd in the 1600m. As a Junior, Avan’s off season running and fitness regimen has paid off, and her Coaches are excited about her upcoming senior CHC Cross Country and Track & Field Seasons. Assistant T&F Coach Kacie Voeller has this to share about the TCIS Champion, “Avan is a tenacious distance runner who brings a willingness to work and improve to every practice, workout and race. As a junior on the track team, her dedication, positivity and encouraging personality have made her a true asset to the team and someone her peers can look to as a leader. She has made incredible strides this season and accomplished great things: running a number of personal bests, qualifying and placing well in multiple events at the state meet, and bringing home a TCIS title in the 3200 meter run.”
We are all very proud of Avan, and thrilled the energy she is investing in distance running is producing conference individual
titles! Congratulations, Avan Johnson, on earning Dolphin Athlete of the Week Distinction, an honor well deserved.

Summer weather has finally arrived. When traveling to the beach, you've likely noticed a variety of flags in various colors, patterns and even shapes.

The USLA endorses a standard of Beach Warning flags used to notify swimmers of conditions, hazards, safer areas for swimming and regulated areas. These flags are approved for use on beaches where lifeguards trained to USLA standards are on duty.

For example, a yellow flag indicates a medium hazard - moderate surf and/or currents are present and weak swimmers are discouraged from entering the water. Red flags, as you may suspect, indicate a high hazard - rough conditions such as strong surf and/or currents are present. All swimmers are discouraged from entering the water. Those entering the water should take great care.

Ocean conditions vary throughout the United States. Conditions that may be considered relatively mild in some places may be seen as a significant safety threat in others. Therefore, in each area where warning flags are employed, the USLA recommends that specific local criteria be developed and that the public be clearly notified of those criteria. Please be sure to check with your local lifeguards (usla.org/certified) about their flags and conditions.

Great advice Officer Harper!

Great advice Officer Harper!

According to the National Safety Council, there are more than 11 million recreational vessels registered in the U.S. And, before you get underway, the Virginia Beach Police Department's (VBPD) Marine Patrol Unit wanted to remind you to select the right life jacket for the activities you will be doing on Virginia Beach waterways. Make sure that the life jacket is a proper fit for your size and weight, fastened properly, and always verify to make sure they are approved by the U.S. Coast Guard.

Where can I go to find out if it’s a red flag day before heading out to the VB Oceanfront or other local beaches? Just trying to be safe!
Some days you just never know what to expect. This plane pulling a banner had engine trouble right off of 24th street. Crash landing just beyond the swimmers. Guards responded and rescued the pilot. In the summer of 1981.
Kent (DUKE) Hinnant directing lifeguard competitions in 1984 on 25th street. He was proud to offer the guards some incentive for training. Sending teams to Ocean City and Chicago.
Lifeguards Ray McDaniels and Tom Goode representing ORS and Virginia Beach at the National Lifeguard Service Association held at Oak Street Beach in Chicago. 1984. Duke was the driving force behind our participation.
Lifeguards in the old days, had the responsibility of guarding the water and dealing with rental equipment..
Ocean Rescue Service Lifeguard Lieutenants George Marshall and Tom Goode. On a day with waves! The beach was so narrow supervision was on the boardwalk. Can anyone guess the year?
Prior to World War Two, My Father Jack Goode was the Lifeguard on 25th street. In those days, the Hotels would sponsor the guards. In this case the Princess Anne Hotel.
Speaking to young lifeguards and anyone who finds themselves in a rescue situation. Always take something that floats! I can remember borrowing a boogie board from a tourist on the beach so I could make an ocean rescue. Get something to put between you and the victim! Something that is not taught in a Red Cross WSI course. One guard made a rescue with a cooler! These rescues were made by guards on luch breaks or while walking between stands for relief. You never know.
The end of an era.. One of or perhaps the last year that Hugh Kitchen held on to the North Beach Service.
From and Old Guard to all the New Guards!! Take care to avoid the UV light as much as possible.. Not easy to think about your 60 year old body when you are in your twenties. But those days will be upon you sooner than you think. Wear the protective hats and glasses! It is just as important to look out for your own safety as it is for others. All the best in the New Year!
