It is with deep sadness we announce that long-time Aquarium volunteer Shirley Jones passed away peacefully earlier this week.
Shirley began volunteering and advocating on behalf of the Aquarium years before the first building was constructed. She, along with her husband and fellow Aquarium volunteer Bruce, followed the construction of the facility and the hiring of the first staff members. In addition to her work as a gallery docent, she is one of the founding members of the Aquarium's Volunteer League and served as the League's president. She also chaired the Recruitment, BBQ, and Education committees, served as shift captain for the Wednesday morning docent shift, and acted as the Volunteer League's historian, chronicling much of the Aquarium's history from the early years to the present. Her efforts didn't end there: Shirley would also assist with woodwork for our changing exhibits as well as floats and displays for volunteer participation in local parades.
All of us who spent time with her were captured by her strength, warmth, free spirit, quick wit, infectious humor, and penchant for perfection in her work.
After 38 dedicated years and over 13,000 hours of service, we bid our farewells to our dear, dear Shirley. She will be missed tremendously.

Have you had the chance to get a peek at Pickles? πŸ‘€ Our green moray eel is a resident in our Norfolk Canyon exhibit and likes to hide out in nooks and crevices. Contrary to the name, this species of eel isn't actually green - their bodies are actually either dark grey or brown, but their skin is covered in a special mucus that gives them their green appearance while protecting them from parasites and bacteria. They're also one of the largest eel species, capable of growing to 8 feet in length and weighing 65 pounds! See if you can spot Pickles on your next visit, or if you have and snagged a photo, share it with us! πŸ“Έ

Feeling shocked by the chilly temperatures? So do the sea turtles. We are now approaching the cold stun season, and our Stranding Response team has already responded to one live, cold-stunned loggerhead this week. During this time of the year, cold-stunned turtles may end up stranded and appear to be dead, but can still be alive, although "comatose," such as in the photo here. If you encounter a sea turtle, whether it seems to be alive or not, please contact our 24/7 Stranding Response team at 757-385-7575 so we can assist!

The Virginia Aquarium operates under Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources permit number 070239 and US Fish and Wildlife Service permit number ES70044D to handle threatened and endangered sea turtles.

An Update on our South Building:
We continue to make progress on renovations as we create more immersive and hands-on experiences with marine life and the underwater world. Just like many other businesses, the renovations and timeline for reopening have faced unexpected delays due to supply chain challenges, impacting the delivery of components needed to prepare the building for our animals, guests, and staff. We're working closely with our partners to continue operating productively and efficiently as equipment and parts are received. With these factors, the South Building’s opening date has become fluid and is now projected for spring of next year.

Until then, we look forward to some of our upcoming milestones:
- Awaiting the building certification of occupancy
- Building life support systems for the small aquariums
- Flushing all systems before filling with salt water
- Running individual water chemistry balance checks for all aquariums
- Slowly adding animals into each system

We are making great strides but have a lot of work left to do. Thank you for your continued patience, understanding, and support!

Virginia Beach Aquarium volunteer 'seas' the value of supporting marine life

Earlier this week, News Channel 3 presented Aquarium volunteer Doreen Cote with their People Taking Action Award, which celebrates people in the community who go above and beyond with acts of kindness or volunteerism. Doreen has been an Aquarium volunteer for six years, during which she has managed to serve in almost every capacity possible: as a Gallery Docent, with the Boat Tours, Onsite Education, the Scout Program, and the Sensible Seafood Program. Doreen has also assisted with a myriad of special events and projects, as well as providing clerical support to the volunteer office and facilitating orientation for new volunteers. Doreen, your service to the Aquarium is priceless! Here's to you for always making yourself available and going above and beyond in your support of the Aquarium! Thank you!
