Red lake Rosie's heard about a young dog in one of our local neighborhoods that had an embedded collar. As usual, such dogs are very frightened and difficult to catch when they have painful embedded collars.

Red Lake Rosie's Rescue offered a reward for his capture and we are so thankful that Dan was able to catch the male pup in a live trap. We named him Ode which means "heart" in our language.

Ode was taken to the emergency weekend vet where he had the collar removed and the wounds cleaned.

Ode left on Sunday for a foster home with one of our partner rescue groups and shortly after his arrival he became very lovable and wanted to give kisses and sit in his foster mom's lap! He had a big smile on his face.

Ode is receiving continued vet care and is healing very well.

Thank you to all our partner rescues and supporters who make the rescue of Ode and others like him possible.

We alert all pet guardians to check and loosen collars regularly.

How do we help end pet malnutrition of dogs and cats here?

Through donations and volunteer help.

At the end of June, we received a large donation of pet food from Purina in the metro area. We rented a large truck, from Enterprise (who gives us a reduced rate on mileage costs - thank you!) and lined up volunteers Jen and Jeff who drove all that food up to the shelter at the end of June.

How do you unload all that food? With a small army of people. Thank you to Floyd, Connie, Susan, Justin, Kathryn, Anthony, Patrick, Joseph, Latest, and Andrew for their hard work in unloading all that food!!!

Thank you to everyone involved!

If you are in need of food for your dog or cat please contact Karen at 218-268-4477

We are asking for a copay of $5 for a large bag and $3 for a small bag to offset the transportation expenses.

Miigwech!!

Flea and Tick Prevention needed for Community Pets

Tick infected animals are showing up with hundreds of blood engorged ticks. The dogs affected are anemic and sick. A recent stray had over 300 engorged ticks. He was bathed and the vet staff spent hours picking off ticks. They applied Frontline and later that evening they went to check on him and there were ticks every where! Crawling all over the floor, in his water dish, and on the walls! ACK!

We have added frontline to our Amazon Wishlist or if you can help by donating we will purchase tick prevention. Bravecto and Revolution are only available thru a Veterinarian.

Thank you!

We have an update on Corky. I'm sure nobody will be surprised to learn that his wonderful foster family has adopted him!

The photos below are his first walk in the park. Corky is doing great. He’s going for fairly long walks everyday. The vet said it’s good for him to exercise now. Our vet at Cornstone saw how he was using his leg and decided not to amputate.

We are so happy for Corky and his new family!

I will post some videos in the comments.

Our Story

Red Lake Rosie’s Rescue Inc. was founded in 2006 to address overpopulation of companion animals on the Red Lake Reservation in northern Minnesota. Our centerpiece is neuter/spay programs including community high volume clinics seasonally and neuter/spay services at the local veterinarian when clinics are not available.

In addition to the neuter/spay programs we also provide rescue, sheltering and rehoming of unwanted and stray animals. Most of the dogs and cats are young, since life expectancy for animals living outdoors on the reservation is usually around two years. We take in puppies each year, as well as kittens, cats, and young adult dogs.

A food shelf is available to help residents and their pets with food as needed. Also programs to help with winter sheltering such as dog houses and straw are available on request and as needed.

Through the past 14 years we have seen decrease of unwanted animals and the state of the animals on the reservation has improved. We have less disease due to our vaccination and wellness programs. We are seeing life expectancy increase and seeing more and more animals enjoying indoor living. More and more residents are becoming more knowledgeable about animal care and we are happy to see these improvements!
