Wow!

Another reason why severe weather can be painful.. it’s not only lightning you have to worry about with these storms.

Seeking shelter and staying off of high ground is always your best option.

To my medical friends...

This young lady was pummeled by hail. (Truly was, verified through new reports/interviews, etc.)

Assuming that nothing subdermal is affected, but all dermal structures are fair game, how would this issue be treated, monitored, etc?

My guess is she was told to go home, take Tylenol, and rest, but, though I can't defend my thinking, it seems that there would be a significant, possibly ongoing, risk from capillary damage as well as wicked electrolyte shift issues...

What do you think?

Once again our busiest hunting season is upon us! Since we are a National Recreation Area we strongly support and encourage everyone to get outside and spend time doing what they love! As always, but especially at this time, we want to promote safety of all visitors. When out for a hike we encourage you to stay on marked trails, wear orange, and always keep your dog on a leash. Picking up a orange safety vest for your dog is also a great idea. I mean truly, who wouldn’t want matching orange vests with their dog?! The truth is we can never be to safe when it comes to being outdoors. Enjoy your time outdoors and please share your photos of you in orange!

Ever see a line gun in action?

Line throwing devices come in many shapes and sizes. This particular model uses a .22 cal blank round to propel a hard foam projectile with a small cord attached. We use a 500’ canister of electrical pull twine.

This is used in a case where we need to get a rope from one side to the other, over a valley, water, or other obstacle.

The small line is shot over the obstacle and then a larger diameter rope is attatched and pulled across.

What a great way to end the riding season!

Huge thank you to Pocono Bike Club for once again having us out to support another great race.

Today was a busy day for the team. Many injuries, including one patient who needed to be packaged and evacuated from the woods.

We even had time to do alittle training with the line gun!

Knowing where certain gear is at a moments notice is important. As one of the final parts of our trailer build we’re refining the interior storage system.

Categorizing and labeling gear makes it easy for members to find exactly what they are looking for quickly. Our gear is kept in water tight storage bins so that they can be stored outside in the event we need to use the trailer as a command post, or they can be loaded into another vehicle to be taken to a remote location.

What an awesome program!

What an awesome program!

Have you ever thought about volunteering but don’t want to leave your dog at home? We have the solution for you!

If you’re local to the area and looking for a fun way to spend time with your dog while also helping out the park, become part of our brand new BARK Ambassador program!

While volunteering, you’ll rove popular trails and educate visitors on the rules of BARK, help people and their dogs have a safe and enjoyable visit and even swear in new BARK Rangers with our Delaware Water Gap BARK Ranger tags. If your dog is super friendly and good with new dogs and people, you can also be a part of our pop-up programs that we set up in tents all around the park at the busiest sites.

Our first training will be held October 14, so apply today at https://www.volunteer.gov/s/volunteer-opportunity/a09t000000CBqbN/bark-ambassador!

Just a friendly reminder that Pennsylvania’s “purple paint law” went into effect last year, which gives landowners the option of using purple paint, rather than signs, to post their properties and alert others that their lands are private, and trespassing is not permitted.

Landowners using purple paint to mark their properties must use vertical lines that are at least 8 inches long and 1 inch wide and must be painted 3-5 ft from the base of the tree. Painted markings on various trees must be within 100 feet of each other.

Remember to always ask for permission before entering private property. If given permission, please be respectful and follow the landowner’s restrictions for hunting on their property.

Read more about the purple paint law on page 19 of your 2021-22 Hunting and Trapping Digest ➡️ https://bit.ly/2WZOdJm.

Yesterday we held our monthly drill day. Members worked together to maintain and build valuable skills.

Patient packaging and movement are always great topics to train on. We practiced packaging a patient for low/high angle evacuations, as well as moving a patient through a low angle Evac route that would require a saftey line.

Some remember exactly where they were, some were small children, and some weren't even born yet, but we all know the pain and sorrow that today holds. We at PA-MR want to say thank you to all the first responders and brave civilians who responded and to those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. To the families of those who never made it home that day, you are in our thoughts and will continue to be.

Many teams, one mission.

Today we were super excited to help a fellow team out with some of our extra gear. WolfPack Search and Recovery is a team based out of the Lehigh valley and is one of the teams we work closely with.

We were able to provide them with a basic medical kit and a few extras to help further there goal of becoming a Pennsylvania Search and Rescue Council recognized team.

09/08/2021

Not many people know that Pennsylvania has a healthy Elk population. Today, elk inhabit portions of Elk, Cameron, Clinton, Clearfield and Potter counties. The animals are descendants of elk released by the Pennsylvania Game Commission between 1913 and 1926.

Like any large wild animal, it’s important to know how to stay safe in there presence.

Are you planning on visiting Pennsylvania’s Elk Country and wondering when is the best time to go?

Mid-September-the end of October is elk mating season, known as rut, and the time of year that most people trek to Benezette to try to catch a glimpse of Pennsylvania’s wild elk herd. As the days shorten, rut is triggered and the testosterone in a bull’s blood stream will increase up to 100 times normal levels! The testosterone spike triggers bugling behavior, which is thought to serve two primary purposes- to call in cows and to warn other bulls of their territory. During rut, bulls focus almost exclusively on fighting, mating and defending harams, and as a result, can lose up to 30% of their body weight! Bulls aren’t the only ones going through behavioral changes this time of year. Cows also experience physiological changes during the rut with estrus levels controlling when they are receptive to breeding. The first estrus cycle typically occurs around the 3rd week in Sept and if unbred, cows will recycle approximately 21 days later. Due to all the changes that the elk are going through during rut, they can also be more aggressive, so please be Elk SMART! This means, give elk space, never feed elk, don’t name elk, and do your part.

Check out Wildlife on Wifi’s new Elk SMART activity on “safe viewing distance” here: https://bit.ly/3tsVbT9.
