Did you know urine is a great source of phosphorus and potassium but most of all nitrogen? According to Abraham Noe-Hays, an expert on this topic, even the World Health Organization came out with a document encouraging the direct use of urine for fertilization so long as harvest was done a month after application. The best part? It makes it so much easier to potty train the twins. Listen to the fascinating urine fertilization podcast 515 on @urbanfarmphx podcast. growyourownfood #permaculturegarden #organicgardening #urbanorganicgardening #organicfood #edibleschoolyard #gardeninugtips #urbanorganicgardener #nonGMO #growveggies #growfoodnotlawns #gardeningwithkids #urbangardening #vegetablegarden #vegetables #veggiepatch #healthyeating #raw #plantbased #superfood #permaculture #urine

A few weeks ago the multi-faceted @sharondale_farm founder, Mark Jones taught our children and the kids of other farmers in the VA area, how to grow mushrooms!

What conference can you name where both adults & youth can learn to farm in a more sustainable way?

The @vabfarming conference!

This is practical education, folks. Not watered-down. Thanks, Mark for giving our kids the confidence to grow blue oysters!

Now, what would you like to see your kids learn to do?

Met the amazing @blueandyellowmakes Chris Smith!
Author of "The Whole Okra." Here he is at a book signing at the @vabfarming!

This guy presented us with a host of creative ways to eat, use, and maximize our uses of okra which gets us thinking...

If we can make paper, rope, ornaments, marshmallows, and gumbo out of okra, think of what we could do with (insert name of any other crop here)?

Okra is also a healthier alternative to cornstarch (as a thickening agent) or snacky chips when dehydrated. To learn what more you can do with this easy-to-grow-more-than-enough-yielding plant...

get the book. 📕

Here's another indoor plant possibility: the swamp hobbit. 😁

According to Nathan Lynch, horticultural scientist of NC State University:

It reaches 6-8 inches in height and a foot or so in breadth in 5 years. The original plant is about 2 feet tall, surrounded by a 5-foot circle of offsets. Leaves and flowers are of normal size; it just has particularly short internodes. Best with some shade. A native, shade-tolerant, evergreen ground cover with showy flowers and good deer resistance. Few plants can make that claim. Has proven hardy in Delaware, so should be good in Zones 6-10

I found this one right outside the @usbotanicgarden on a snowy day!

We were supposed to raise prices to our garden mentoring program last Wednesday but got busy with all the conferences we've been attending so...

If you would like to grow a garden this year and need a
simple
strategic
personally guided way to do it?

That's us! We teach permaculture (beyond organic) gardening.

Self-paced
Step-by-step
With Dave and I knowing your name and what your garden looks like
Sending you motivational garden stuff in the mail

Why do we do this?
Because not too long ago, we were you.
We had two kids with major allergies,
Now we have 6!
And the two allergic ones, are a bit less allergic.
But in that gardening despair and desperation
We were downright frustrated and felt as if we were imprisoned by our circumstances.
Can't control the food.
Can't control society.
But then,
we found permaculture...
And realized, wait, we can control something.
We can grow our own food!
And boy was that liberating.

Then we had to do a lot of work,
and continue to learn and working in the garden to this day.
As soon as we learn garden stuff, we apply it and see if it's worth sharing with all the subscribers on our mailing list
(You might wanna sign-up.)

But if you want to get all of this technique, permie principles and gung-ho spirit in an organized fashion...

that's GIY.

And to keep the level of quality of this program up to snuff, we are raising prices.

But not before January 31.

So join in before then!

If you're reading this far... we are waiting to see you in the GIY community and learning more about your garden soon!

Questions? Comment below or DM us.

And whatever you decide...

Grow abundantly!
Nicky & Dave

How do you know whether or not you've planned a successful herb garden? You are harvesting it right through the winter. This is a shot from @vabfarming's conference two weeks ago.

Not only was it the best conference @vabfarming ever had...

Not only did they have an amazing youth program where one of the actual speakers taught the kids while the parents could attend the talks of the other speakers...

The food was organic and local from the nearby farm...

made super yummy by the chefs of @hotelroanoke!

Best conference food evah!

If you missed the @sherrettfoodforest webinar last night, "Introduction to Food Forest Plant Guilds" you can still catch it if you sign-up on the link above or at www.growmyownfood.com/gardening-webinars/

This is way beyond just companion planting. When you sign-up, bring your notes and write stuff down. Experts say we retain 40% more than if we just passively watch or listen to something.

Thanks @sherrettfoodforest, for such a great talk!

If you visit the Sterling Community Center in Northern VA, you will be warmly welcomed by Ron.🤗

Beside him the indoor garden at the former building, that he nurtured one plant a time.

Sadly they are tearing down the old building and we are all uncertain about them having the same "plant island" feature in the new one. 😥

Ron has a beautiful story about how working at a nursery helped him deal with major stress in his life. So it was only natural that he brings his love for gardening to the community center.

And if we didn't already have enough in common, he too has gotten cited by the HOA!!

In his case, for having moss on his lawn!!! Can you imagine?

He told them that there was nothing he could do about that because the way his land sloped made that location naturally mossy.

But he cleverly conceals it with a special groundcover. (In future posts I will reveal what his favorite ornamental ground covers are.)

And he uses the peat moss as groundcover for his potted indoor plants! Clever, right?

He says, "They're like a blanket for the plants!"

Indoor Gardening...

Why is this necessary?
Why is this even important?
What does this have to do with #permaculture?

Our next guest speaker, Melissa Manuel runs a thriving food forest and CSA in Portland, Oregon. She is an amazing change agent in her community and is bringing her expertise to you all for free. Her webinar is entitled, "Introduction to Food Forest Plant Guilds (link above or just go to our website and look for webinars)

Well, what first got her interested in gardening was her love for an indoor plant.

One indoor plant created a community food forest in Oregon.

Think about that.

That's why Indoor Gardening is important. Indoor gardening counts even if you consider yourself a veggie grower.

I hope to see you live on the webinar!! It'll be a great intersection of indoor and outdoor gardeners!

This is what vermicomposting worms look like when you first get them in the mail and transfer them to your bin.

These worms are our friends and we've been successful thus far keeping them alive through the winter.

What is your composting experience using worms like? What tips would you give newbie composters?

I think I'd say, go easy on the scraps. You'll soon find you'll need an outdoor compost bin to handle most of the food scraps (especially if you have 6 kids!) These wormies like food, but they appreciate the shredded paper, egg cartons & pencil ✏️ shavings especially when their bins start to get wet and smelly.

For those times, paper and laying off the food a bit (maybe a week) will bring balance back to your bin!

Sometimes we think that growing our own food will make our lives more complicated. But when I look at the garden for something to cook, I try to make that food shine with very simple culinary treatment.

Such is the recipe below from @inspiredtaste. Here Adam and Joanne take a cabbage, chop it up and saute it with a ton of flavor.

For more healthy food! Join us tomorrow at the Washington Convention Center in downtown DC for the @nbcwashington Health & Fitness Expo.

Ingredients:
2 pounds white cabbage, core removed and shredded (10 cups)

1 1/2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil

1 tablespoon garlic, minced

Pinch crushed red pepper flakes

1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt or more to taste

Half of a lemon, cut into wedges

Directions:

Heat the olive oil in a large skillet or Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Add the cabbage, garlic, red pepper flakes, and the salt. It might seem like too much cabbage for the pan, but as it cooks, the cabbage will wilt down.

Cook, stirring occasionally until the cabbage is tender and some of the cabbage begins to turn a light brown; 10 to 15 minutes.

Squeeze the juice from 2 lemon wedges over the cabbage. Taste then adjust with more salt, pepper, and lemon juice as needed.

Any advanced gardening IG & FB friends? Master gardeners, botanists, homesteaders? We love you! And we want to learn more about your garden secrets! 😍 We are creating a brand new blog experience on our Permaculture Garden website (www.growmyownfood.com) and we want it to reflect (3) three tiers of gardening know-how.

The first level, we are calling, "The Apprentice Gardener!"
The second level is "The Accomplished Gardener!"
And the third level is "The Advanced Gardener!"

If you can think of a better word (preferably beginning with "A") that encompasses the ideals of the homesteader, zero-waster, and one who lives a simpler life after having gardened or farmed for many years, please comment below.

And please comment below if you already are an "Advanced Gardener," aspire to be one and have a great idea for an advanced gardening blog!

In the end, all gardeners, especially advanced ones, realize that we are all of us... beginning gardeners.

Because the garden is so vast, so deep and so mysterious that we find how tiny yet how powerful we are in a garden.

Some topics we already have for the Advanced Gardener are:

Organic Gardening on a Budget (maybe because as excited newbie gardeners we might over-purchase our materials?) -
www.growmyownfood.com/organic-gardening-on-a-budget/

The Medicinal Herb Garden (we start to realize that we can actually heal ourselves from the garden!) -
www.growmyownfood.com/herb-garden/

Meditation Gardens (in the garden we come to discover God, the Creator) -
www.growmyownfood.com/meditation-gardens/

And if these articles interest you at all, be sure to subscribe to our Permaculture Gardens newsletter! Click the Profile link above and join a growing online community garden!!

Our Story

WE GROW TO FEED OUR FAMILY

We began changing the way we ate after our first two kids developed severe food allergies. We soon discovered that the most nutrient-dense, most organic, tastiest fruits and veggies were the ones we could grow ourselves.

6 years and many mistakes later, we manage to supplement 25% of our food from growing in our small townhouse. We currently grow 235 lbs/year on 1/40th of an acre! If we can do it, you can too!

WE GROW TO CHANGE THE WORLD

Permaculture designer, Geoff Lawton likes to say, “All the problems of the world can be solved in a garden.”

We’ve found this to be true time and again as we build a community of growers online through our GIY program and offline through the after school club we run called, “Sprouts.”

We were once banned by our HOA from growing in our front yard. We’ve made some heading in our neighborhood as well and we tell that story HERE.

WE GROW FOR SPIRITUAL REASONS

Every garden for us is an opportunity to find God and an opportunity to restore Paradise.

“More in a garden grows, than the gardener knows.” – Anonymous

“Gardening symbolizes our race’s primordial acceptance of a responsibility and role in rectifying the harm done to the creation through sin.” – Vigen Guiroian

WE GROW TO BE HAPPY

We are a very positive family and we love helping other families grow because it makes us happy.

We celebrate YOU landing on our page! Yay! You found us!

Now we can’t wait to meet you online or in person. So sign-up for our webinar and tell us more about why you grow.

I've started Pak Choi, bush beans, sweet peas, snow peas, sweet basil, 3 types of parsley, cantaloupe, bell peppers, and different types of hot peppers, all started indoors this past week, I still have 4 flats to finish filling indoors. Can't wait till I can plant my root crops outside, but with snow on the ground it won't be for a while.
If you could choose to grow only 5 plants this year, what would they be? Comment below, so we know!
