"So today in the midst of COVID-19, while the earth stands still, while the clamor on its surface is quelled, while the din of distraction is diminished and thronging humanity is hushed, are we listening?" https://rstbl.ch/3bH7D7z

I recently received a ministry update from Margaret Ashmore, the speaker we intended to hear from at this year’s Women’s Retreat.  In the update, she shared some thoughts about “things as they are” in our current situation.  I’m sharing it with you (below) because her words point us to w...

Should You Pursue Happiness? - Wednesday's Word

It’s deep in the heart of every human being. It wanders around in your soul, waiting to be satisfied. The way you pursue it will set the trajectory of your life story. It is everyone’s quest but, in this world, no one’s destination.

It is what Jesus is, not what we are, that gives rest to the soul.

It is what Jesus is, not what we are, that gives rest to the soul.

I keep trying to give pep talks to myself: you can do it. One foot in front of the other.⁣

I do it without thinking, without realizing that I'm looking to myself for the strength I need. But there is no power in willpower, no strength in this frail heart. ⁣

So when I lighted on this quote from Charles Spurgeon today, it felt like taking a deep breath of fresh air: ⁣

"It is ever the Holy Spirit's work to turn our eyes away from self to Jesus; but Satan's work is just the opposite of this; for he is constantly trying to make us regard ourselves instead of Christ...We shall never find happiness by looking at our prayers, our doings, or our feelings; it is what Jesus is, not what we are, that gives rest to the soul. If we would at once overcome Satan and have peace with God, it must be by looking unto Jesus."⁣

He is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. Psalm 73:26

We Need a Better Hope | Reston Bible Church

"I need a lasting hope, a hope that speaks to the pain in my heart. I need to remind myself of the hope that isn’t wishful thinking." Women's Ministry Director Marsha Mathews writes on looking back, looking ahead, and looking to a better hope: https://rstbl.ch/3c7VkBZ

When I began writing this, it was another rainy day with no hope of sunshine, and I had a bad case of the doldrums. When I feel that way, I can easily go to despair and find myself losing hope. When that happens, I have to ask myself what I’m putting my hope in. Am […]

I don’t know if this season for you has been straining or renewing or a sizeable portion of both, but one thing my soul has needed is the slowing down. Not slow as in I’m sitting around all day, because how being at home can turn into quite a bit of work is still a mystery to me. I’m sure you feel the same way.

But I’ve been restored by the not having to go, go, go (that phrase always runs in triplets, doesn’t it?) The be there, run to that, swing by this, don’t be late... I’ve had more time for reflection, prayer, sleep, conversation, the Word, for school (I didn’t know how hard going back to school would be).
.
Queen Elizabeth said in her recent speech, “I hope in the years to come everyone will be able to take pride in how they responded to this challenge...” Such beautiful words. I also hope we’ll be able to look back and think of the ways we drew closer to God. So many good Bible studies and resources from some truly humble and insightful authors are available right now. @lifewaywomen has lots of offerings, so check them out.

I’m thankful they’re offering the “Finding God Faithful” videos free for several more weeks. https://onlinestudy.smallgroup.com/v/FindingGodFaithful

Our sustenance during these very challenging days must by the Word of God.

Our sustenance during these very challenging days must by the Word of God.

Not long ago, I wrote this about Corrie ten Boom in an article for @thegospelcoalition about her book, The Hiding Place:

We need to hear from a woman starved of freedom, food, and family that what kept her alive was a contraband Bible she miraculously kept hidden throughout her ordeal. Corrie describes “gulping” the entire Gospels in one sitting and “living” in the truths of the Word as if they were written for her exact situation. In a flea-ridden bunkhouse, so filthy that no guard would enter, she and Betsie would open the Bible and read it aloud, waiting as different voices translated the life-giving words into German, Polish, and French:

"Like waifs clustered around a blazing fire, we gathered about it, holding out our hearts to its warmth and light. The blacker the night around us grew, the brighter and truer and more beautiful burned the word of God. . . . I would look about us as Betsie read, watching the light leap from face to face. More than conquerors. . . . It was not a wish. It was a fact. We knew it, we experienced it minute by minute—poor, hated, hungry. We are more than conquerors. Not “we shall be.” We are!"

If Scripture sustained these women in the darkest of places, surely it’s our sustenance as we wait for our own darkness to end. In our world full of ideas, may we cherish and “gulp” the life-giving words just as Corrie and Betsie did.

***

I've thought about that quote often in these days, and how, in solitary with her contraband Bible, Corrie marveled at how it seemed to have been written for just that time and experience.

In this umpteenth day of quarantine, apathy is setting in. I awake in frustration and find myself wondering where God is. And then I remember that He has given me Himself in the Scriptures, and that I may drink of Living Waters every minute my heart and mind grow parched. I marvel that His words have been written seemingly for each circumstance that comes our way, including this season of isolation and uncertainty.

Let us drink. Let us eat. His Word is our sustenance in the darkness.

Our Women's Ministry Director, Marsha Mathews, has a couple encouraging resources you can check out here: including a free devotional from Kelly Minter: https://www.restonbible.org/2020/04/16/womens-devotional-book-recommendation/

Dear Ladies of RBC, Hope this finds you well. I’d like to share with you a couple of things that have helped and encouraged me so much during this quarantine.   The first is a 2 week devotional on the sermon on the mount by Kelly Minter. This devotional went a long way in helping me …

Ephesians 1:18-21
"I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is the same as the mighty strength he exerted when he raised Christ from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms."

Five Thoughts From Quarantine - Wednesday's Word

Stay safe, hunker down, and remember Jesus and the glories of his gospel of grace.

Like most of you, I’m hunkered down in my house, not going outside, and distancing myself from everyone except my wife. It’s particularly crucial for me to observe strict isolation orders because I fall into the high-risk category.

I want to share more about this idea in coming days.... but I’ve been realizing that in really hard times I can be more interested in God’s deliverance than I am in His presence.

We have a special opportunity right now to discover the treasure of Who He Is as even more essential to our wellbeing than what He can do for us.

I know most of us are scrambling and trying to figure things out, but in all of this my prayer for myself and my prayer for you is that we find that the inestimable value of being in relationship with Jesus is even greater than Him rescuing us on our terms. That’s not to say He doesn’t deliver, rescue, or provide—yes He does!—but may we find the great joy and peace of being with Him apart from what He can do for us.

I think He has something to say to us in these days.

Don't, like I almost did, automatically assume this doesn't apply to you.

Are You A Functional Atheist? - Wednesday's Word

Don't, like I almost did, automatically assume this doesn't apply to you.

Yes, we believe that God exists, that he created the heavens and the earth, that the Bible is accurate, and that paradise awaits, but we often live—at a functional level—as if there is no God.

I’ve never enjoyed making New Year’s resolutions. It just feels like making a list of things I’m going to fail at doing. Rarely do I see them through. Mostly I try for a few weeks and then either quit trying or forget them. Or they get set aside in the tyranny of the urgent. It ... Read More a...

Hi! Is anyone untested in attending this? I am newer to the church and not plugged in to the women's ministry yet. I'd love to have some sisters in Christ to attend this with!
