Flashback to nearly 17 years ago, little Cali Detmer was born at just 28 weeks in Breese, Illinois. Weighing only two pounds four ounces and facing severe lung disease, she was quickly transported to SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital by our transport team for treatment. Fast forward to 2020, Cali is a graduating high school senior and she and her family are so incredibly happy to see her thriving. This year, she had a very special request for the team here at Glennon--to take her senior photos with the helicopter that offered her life-saving transport not once but three times. We were more than happy to make it happen and we are so excited to see what your future holds, Cali!

It may look a little different in such an unusual year, but our friends from Knights of Columbus will still be hosting their annual Tootsie Roll Drive this weekend. This support has allowed our Knights of Columbus Developmental Center to continue to be for children with developmental needs.

As we close out #childhoodcancerawareness month, we wanted to highlight a program that is near and dear to us here at Glennon. Kids Rock Cancer -Maryville University has been spreading cheer with our Costas and 4 North kids through music therapy for some time but due to COVID-19 they had to get creative in how they interacted. They have created a variety of virtual online programs and even recently completed their The LIGHT Foundation’s state-of-the-art, fully equipped LIGHT Box Productions studio. Our kids here at Glennon continue to be positively impacted by these programs and some have even recorded songs in the new studio! We are so grateful for KRC and can't wait to see more of the smiles they make through their programs.

Today is #WorldHeartDay and we were over the rainbow excited to see this wonderful update of one of our heart kids, Lily, who was born with a congenital heart defect and has overcome many obstacles over the past two years. Lily's mom shared: "Lily turned 2 and we have so much to be thankful for this year - getting her feeding tube removed is at the top of the list! We wouldn’t be here without our amazing medical team at Cardinal Glennon and Missouri First Steps."

A courageous act was what prompted a fellow coworker to nominate Dr. Justin Josephsen for a SSMile Award. Over the summer as Dr. Josephsen was pulling into a spot across from SSM Health Saint Louis University Hospital, he quickly noted that a EMT needed help. He ran to get AED equipment out of the EMT's ambulance and sent someone to notify the ED of the situation. He then assisted the EMT in doing CPR until help could arrive. Thank you for your quick and compassionate act, Dr. Josephsen!

In celebration of the Sun Run, Flat Runner has been making their way through the halls of #CardinalGlennon. When they stopped by to hang out with our Child Life team, we asked Team Leader Kim what your support means to them.

"When I think about how the Child Life Department benefits from Foundation support, it's hard to imagine what our department would look like without support from the Children's Fund.

When you see a Child Life Specialist providing procedural support during an IV placement, the iPad, bubbles & distraction toys were funded by donor dollars.

When you see a patient getting to be a kid & playing in the playroom- literally everything they touch (toys, games, books, crafts) was funded by donor dollars.

When you see a patient celebrate their last chemo with a special shirt autographed by the treatment team, a personalized sign, and a gold medal to represent that major milestone-- all those items (down to the markers used to sign the shirts) were made possible with donor dollars.

Simply put, our department could not do our job without the resources that are only possible with donor support. We are forever grateful for your gifts to the Children's Fund because we see the impact of it firsthand every day!"

My son went into surgery & they only allow 1 parent in which was fine I understand so I waited out in my car... The problem came when I had to use the restroom so I went to go inside to go then come back to my car. I was told I couldn't use the bathroom because only one parent is allowed to visit at a time which I wasn't visiting them... I was asking to use the restroom on the 1sr floor... This is stupid & insane. Whoever the Nurses were at 9:30am on June 5th 2020 should be severely reprimanded for having no common sense. At least if you're going to make people wait in their cars provide a Porto potty or something... It's bad enough I have to wait in my car but you won't let me use the bathroom either. You guys usually do better but not letting me use the restroom for 5 seconds then leave is stupidity beyond belief.
To all the lively people of Cardinal Glennon. I am so grateful for everything you’ve done for me. To the Costas center, you all took amazing care of me since I was 4. You saved me even though i was extremely sick. You all kept me brave and strong and saved my life. I won’t forget not being scared of doctors visits and playing in the waiting room. I won’t forget the overnight stays with all the help I could ever ask for and all the smiling faces. I’m now turning 21 this year thanks to all of you lovely people. You made a scary moment of childhood fun where I just look back and smile because you all made it less scary and I could focus on the good times. So thank you all and please stay safe during everything that’s happening in the world!
Happy nurses day to all the nurses at Glennon especially picu. We can’t thank you enough for what you have done for our family.
So nice that Thor is visiting with employees. A breath of sunshine for sure.
Who works there plus who has saint Louis blues season tickets as well?
This is my son Caiden. He was born 5 weeks early and was diagnosed with Necrotizing Enterocolitis. He spent his first 3 months at Cardinal Glennon. He was not expected to live, doctors said it would be a miracle if he survived. The surgeon Dr. Keller and his team saved him thanks to their quick actions along with lots of prayers and hope. Caiden lost over 1/2 of his intestines and was left with a large abdominal scar. He is also mildly autistic, but you'd never even know today he went through all that. On May 11th he will be 14 yrs old and he is growing into a nice young man. Thank you Cardinal Glennon for everything your medical staff did for my son almost 14 yrs ago....from the NICU staff to the PICU staff and everyone in between ❤
Thank you all for the hard work and caring! As the grandparent of a cancer patient I'm very concerned about Cardinal Glennon accepting non-infected adult patients from St Mary's to make room for Conv-19 patients. I'm sure this decision was made after much consideration. I'm very apprehensive concerning this decision. There doesn't seem to be a way to contain the germ virus from spreading from people and objects. This feels like an accident waiting to happen. Since my grandson's parents learned of this decision for the news last night it was a shock for them. I know we are dealing with a pandemic, but these kids with cancer having been dealing with a pandemic named CANCER!
These powerful prayers are blessed by Jesus Christ & His Heavenly Father for All of us. They bring positive loving results to All with faith in Jesus Christ. Jesus Saves & Heals but You Must receive Him into your heart First, where He can help you. God Bless
Do you want homemade masks?
My son is in the NICU at Cardinal Glennon (for the past 8 months) and as of today, my wife is the one visitor allowed to come visit him. I can't visit him until this is over. I understand this. We have got to keep the children as healthy as possible during these very rough times. But, if the coronavirus is spread through person-to-person contact and since people are still coming into the hospital (including the Sweet Divine), then why is nobody required to wear a mask. I talked to a security official and he said they can wear masks but they have not been given the order to wear them at all times. Why aren't the front desk people wearing masks? Why aren't the nurses and doctors required to masks? Why aren't all families required to wear masks? Any of these people could come in contact with my wife or the nurses and doctors attending my son. They are all potential carriers of COVID-19? They could all infect my son. Why aren't masks required?
