Today we celebrate and uplift those who identify as non-binary! Non-binary is a spectrum of gender identities that are not exclusively masculine or feminine - identities that are outside the gender binary.

Image description: a graphic with a white background, a yellow square with a black boarder on the right side, and a purple boarder on the left side. The text in black in the center of the yellow square reads “HAPPY INTERNATIONAL NON-BINARY DAY!” The SQSH logo appears in navy blue on the bottom right of the graphic.

New mutual aid fund for formerly incarcerated people @stlreentryfund

Missouri's incarceration rate is 859/100,000 people. That is a higher rate than any country in the ENTIRE WORLD. Incarceration is a crisis of human rights, racial justice, and public health. Compared to every where in the world, nearly every US state relies too heavily on criminalization and incarceration. Support formerly incarcerated people in our community!! A statement we put out at noon today regarding the Pride Care-A-Van: Tower Grove Pride has volunteered to raise awareness for SQSH's work in today's Pride Care-A-Van event. At this time, we have received assurances from event organizers that police presence will be limited solely to blocking off streets for participant safety. As an organization committed to anti-racist policies and actions, and recognizing the history of police brutality that has affected our city, we will hold ourselves and the police accountable to this. If the police do not follow these requests, we will encourage and fully participate in any attempt to prevent police participation or presence in any part of the parade. We encourage other participants to join us in this important work.

From @minorityhealthstl

National HIV Testing Day is to encourage people to get tested for HIV, know their status, and get linked to care and treatment. Knowing your HIV status helps you make decisions to prevent getting or transmitting HIV. Come get tested for FREE so we can end the epidemic. #NHTD

SQSH stands in solidarity against systemic violence against the Black community. The photos below highlight opportunities to donate to organizations in Minneapolis and St. Louis and nationwide bail support. Together we can support efforts to defund the police, make communities safer, and protect protesters.

06/02/2020

The modern LGBTQIA+ rights movement would not exist without the Black and Brown trans women that led the Stonewall Riots in 1969. Pride would not exist without the intellectual, emotional, and physical labor of Black and Brown trans women like Marsha P. Johnson, Sylvia Rivera, and Miss Major - they must be recognized and remembered for their contributions. Trans women of color are at the center of the LGBTQ movement and we must work to uplift them every day, not just this month. We must also work to actively dismantle the systems that oppress Black trans women and the Black community.

Pride began as a protest against police violence. The same police violence that exists in the greater pattern of institutional racism that Black people experience on a daily basis. We are in solidarity with Black leaders and activists. We celebrate our Black LGBTQ siblings and must actively join together against white supremacy.

🔸
What is SQSH? —
SQSH, the St. Louis Queer+ Support Helpline, provides free, confidential, and identity-affirming emotional support and resource referrals over the phone. We are a short-term peer counseling service with trained volunteers taking calls.
🔸
Who can call SQSH? —
Anyone! While our mission is to provide support and referrals to the St. Louis LGBTQIA+ community, we welcome all our callers. Anyone of any sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression can call. Friends, family members, and service providers are welcome to call to chat about LGBTQIA+ issues and/or how they can best support the LGBTQIA+ people in their lives. We take calls from the NE Missouri and Metro East Illinois areas.
🔸
When I call, what should I expect? — When you call SQSH, this is what happens:
1. You will hear a voice message, with options to connect with a crisis line or a SQSH volunteer.
2. If you choose to be connected with a volunteer, they'll introduce the helpline, themselves, and ask if you’re in a safe place to talk.
3. The volunteer will then ask what you'd like to talk about. Share as much or as little as you’d like - we're here to listen.
4. At the end of your call, we may ask you to fill out a brief, anonymous online survey about your call experience.
🔸
Who takes my call? — SQSH volunteers are St. Louis-area community members. They receive 55 hours of training, including peer counseling, LGBTQIA+ cultural competency, racism-interruption, and survivor support for relationship and sexual violence. SQSH volunteers are not licensed mental health professionals.
🔸
I want to get involved with SQSH. — Great, thank you! SQSH depends on the support of the community. Check out our website (link in bio) for volunteer opportunities or to donate.

From trans activist CeCe McDonald: “A lot of people just gave up after gay marriage and so many things that they fought for that trans women were a part of, and once they had their victory trans women didn’t seem to matter anymore… We have to keep fighting ― because the work isn’t done until it’s done.”

I am sending this anonymously because the person who divulged this information is currently an inmate at the Missouri Department of Corrections Eastern Reception and Diagnostic Center in Vandalia. There are 33 positive COVID-19 inmates, not including staff who have not been tested. There is no quarantine and the inmates who are positive share the same dining facilities where the inmates who are on kitchen staff are pulling 16 hour shifts 3-4 days per week and not provided with proper masks. JPay the email app for inmates to keep in contact with their loved ones has mysteriously crashed and inmates are having a very difficult time contacting their families during a very difficult time. This is not fair treatment to inmates, some of which are waiting on parole hearings, so may be innocent Inmate # 1041875 no current charges being held at Vandalia in the same housing unit that 4 people tested positive for COVID-19. Cells and housing unit not cleaned after inmates test positive. Has a $600 hold on her account for a suicide attempt. Inmate DOC #1274635 awaiting Parole hearing. Working 16 hour shifts in kitchen serving COVID positive inmates with no face masks. Has boots that do not fit, cannot order bras because canteen is closed after 16 hour shifts 5 days a week. FYI: Staff are allowed to refuse to be tested. Upon exiting the prison, inmates are to have their blood drawn and nurses (again who are allowed to refuse getting tested, do not wear gloves or masks.
