The NLG-SFBA Immigration Justice Committee is partnering with CAIR - San Francisco Bay Area and the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) on a webinar surveying what immigrants and noncitizens might face when entering or leaving a port of entry in California.

Speakers will cover what to expect when questioned by Customs and Border Protection (CBP), what authority the government has with investigating electronics, and how to take action when CBP goes outside of that authority and violates the rights of the person detained, depending on their immigration status.

πŸ”” Tomorrow at 11am! πŸ””

This is a public hearing on a pending settlement in the Babu v. Ahern case, which addresses mental healthcare in Santa Rita Jail, and will determine whether or not that settlement receives preliminary approval to move forward. Rather than prioritize the release of people with serious mental illness or fund community-based alternatives to incarceration.

Join the hearing tomorrow at 11am to show that there is community and interest in a settlement that does not increase the power of the sheriff! ⬇️

πŸ“£ Youth Volunteer Opportunity! πŸ“£

From 2021-2022, the main work of the Youth Caucus will be a Know Your Rights Training of Trainers. Through this, they will gain the knowledge on their rights when interacting with law enforcement and grow the skills to hold their own Know Your Rights trainings.

This series will be held from September – May and there will be one training session per month (excluding December). By the end of the training series, in late May or early June, participants will then invite their peers to a Know Your Rights training facilitated by Youth Caucus members, with the support of civil rights lawyers.

This month will just be an orientation for new Youth Caucus members so they can learn what to expect from the series and what we expect from them; we are planning to hold it on Tuesday, Sept. 28th at 4pm PT.

If you have any questions about the Youth Caucus or the training program, please contact our program coordinator: [email protected]

πŸ“… Mark Your Calendars! πŸ“…

We will be hosting Progressive Law Day (PLD) at UC Hastings Friday, Sept. 24th from 12pm-6pm PT, followed by an Appetizer Hour from 6pm-7:30pm PT to relaunch our local NextGen/Mentorship Committee. While we are optimistic about hosting this event in-person for the fall, we are prepared to transition this event virtually in the event of circumstances beyond our control.

Progressive Law Day is a free half-day conference, historically organized and led by law student members of the National Lawyers Guild, San Francisco Bay Area Chapter, and open to legal workers, lawyers, activists, and anyone interested in learning about radical lawyering and legal work.

On September 22, the County will attempt to approve a massive expansion of Santa Rita Jail. The community has opposed this since 2016, but a legal settlement threatens to increase jail capacity and hire more Deputies just as the Eviction Moratorium is set to expire.

If you believe that the answer to the mental health, public health, and housing crisis in this county is NOT to give more power to the racist & exploitative agency that carries out evictions...consider joining the Santa Rita Jail Hotline to help inform, interview, and organize with Hotline callers!

Despite Biden's Promises, Immigrant Detention and Surveillance Grow

"At the same time, Biden is asking Congress to increase ICE’s funding next year so that its β€œalternatives to detention” program can track 140,000 immigrants β€” about two-thirds more than the roughly 86,000 enrolled when Biden entered office. Currently, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Detroit have the most people enrolled, followed by Miami, Newark and Chicago."

The "insidious" expansion is creating new physical and psychological harms, advocates say.
