Marine Glenn Murphy reported to the Supreme Commandant yesterday 06 October 2018. He was a Charter Member of the Sgt Jack Hettchen Jr. Detachment #1428, Montgomery County, Md.

Marine Glenn Murphy
1921 -2018

If you were born in 1921 in Grinnell, Iowa the chances were pretty good you would wind up fighting in the largest most destructive war in world history and you would not believe you would be doing it with Navajo Indians. That’s exactly what happened to Glenn Murphy.

Glenn attended public schools in Grinnell, moved to Washington, D.C. in 1938. He graduated from the Central High School in 1941 and enlisted in the Marines in August, 1942. To a depression era young man Glenn Murphy was not put off by recruit training at Parris Island and considered his training as a Radio Operator an opportunity to learn some practical electronic skills. Glenn was not told Japanese soldiers thought Radio Operator meant target. Eventually Glenn was assigned to the 25th Regiment in the 4th Marine Division. The Marine Corps made his travel arrangements to Camp Pendleton.

The Marines were so appreciative of his work that they sent him on an all expense paid cruise aboard brand new Liberty ship that floated along at from 8 to10 Knot’s via the Panama Canal. That introduction to the tropics was an omen of things to come.

From Camp Pendleton Glenn Murphy made another voyage overseas to a tropical paradise called the Marshall Islands where he put his Radio Operator skills to good use. In between the invasions of Saipan and Tinian Murphy returned to Maui for R and R.

After Maui the word came down and the Marines were ordered to take a waterless sulfur smelling scab of an island called Iwo Jima and after that to get ready to assault the mainland of Japan. In Glenn’s own words: “I was quite active with three Navajo Code Talkers we had. All good men! I was the driver of one of the four Radio Jeeps and had the responsibility of keeping them running. Mine was only one of several Jeeps that eventually got ashore on Iwo”.

After Japan surrendered Glenn Murphy was Honorably Discharged on November 5, 1945 at the U.S. Navy Base in Bainbridge, Maryland.

Glenn joined the carpenters union and founded his home improvement contracting business. He married a Minnesota girl named Audrey he met in Maryland. They settled in Rockville, Maryland and have two sons Mike and Steve. Glenn is active in the Lutheran Church, VFW, the American Legion and an antique car club.

In 2015 Glenn Murphy became a charter and founding member of the Sgt. John Franklin Hettchen Detachment 1428 of the Marine Corps League in Rockville, Maryland. He is an active detachment participant and a regular at the Tuesday morning breakfasts. Glenn Murphy died this week; he was 97 years old. Glenn was a good man and an outstanding Marine. He will be missed.

Toys for Tots - Montgomery County. MD

Please share my post with your friends. Thanks

Friends of Toys for Tots - Montgomery County, Maryland - I'm driving all around looking for a warehouse, please if would, SHARE this post.

I need a place 7k to 10k in size to conduct business in 2017 for T4T. If I don't get something soon we may not have a program this year. No Toys for those less fortunate.

Do you know an owner who wants a tax right off? I can get a letter from the foundation saying that this space was donated to Toys for Tots - Montgomery County MD.

My long term Goal:

Is for something permanent, a piece of land, 2 or 3 acres. Putting up a warehouse with solar panels, shelving etc - but I need help. Monetary help. If you'd like to be a part of this I will accept donations of any amount.

$1000 or more wiil get a Brick on our Benefactors Wall.

I am setting up a Non Profit Foundation with just one objective, to support Toys for Tots in Montgomery County MD. The name of this Foundation is The Clipper Helping Hands Foundation.

Marine Halsey Smith slipped and broke his hip on Thursday, this afternoon Halsey was in surgery earlier today having (3) pins placed to repair the break. The doctor told them that if you were to break your hip, this is the kind to have. Sounds encouraging! He's at Holy Cross room 3326.

This makes our 2nd Marine to break a hip.. this must stop!
