Fuel Effects on Operability of Aircraft Gas Turbine Combustors | Progress in Astronautics and Aeronautics

Alternative jet fuel has been an active area of research and development since the 1973 oil embargo. The compilation of this research has resulted in a large technical base for understanding the combustion of alternative jet fuels that have a wide range of physical and chemical properties and operating in different combustion devices.

Our newest title, Fuel Effects on Operability of Aircraft Gas Turbine Combustors, summarizes the results obtained in the first five years of the National Jet Fuel Combustion Program. We still have much to learn about the combustion of alternative jet fuels.

Level up your ice simulations from ❄️2D to 🧊3D geometries.

In most cases ice accretion is a 3D phenomenon and 3D modeling and simulation is preferred. Yet 2D analysis is still widely used—it's well accepted and established the groundwork for 3D methods.

The AIAA Atmospheric and Space Environments Technical Committee is hosting an Ice Prediction Workshop 26-29 July to define a methodology to compare the simulated 3D ice shapes among themselves and with the 3D experimental ice shapes to capture best practices in icing simulation, identify current limitations of the 3D tools, and make recommendations about specific areas where more work is needed. http://aiaa.mycrowdwisdom.com/diweb/catalog/item?id=6475588

I am extending you an invitation to a Zoom event next week on May 20, 2021 at 10:30AM PST. If interested please write me an email at: [email protected],.om (Professor Emeritus Ileana Costea, PhD, Interim President American-Romanian Academy of Arts and Sciences). The event is about skydiver and pilot Smaranda Braescu, an important aviatic champion in the 1930s. Romanian-Although of Romanian origin and living in Romania, Smaranda Braescu remains in the history of aviation as the pride of both Romania and the YS for set the albsolute world record in skydiving in 1932 on American soil (Sacaramento, CA), jumping from an altitude of 24,000 ft, from an American plan (CESNA) flown by an American pilot. In 1932, in her single-engine Miles Hawk, she established the record crossing the Mediterranean Sea between Rome and Tripoli (1100 km in 6 hours and 10 minutes).

The polls are open for the 2021 AIAA elections. If you are a member eligible to vote, you should have received an email with the link to the voting site that has all the details on how to vote as well as the information on the candidates. And just in case you missed the email, here’s the link: https://www.aiaa.org/about/Governance/nominations-and-elections The Executive Nominating Committee and the Council Nominating Committee both did an outstanding job this year to bring us a slate of excellent candidates to serve in the leadership positions being selected this year. These are all hard choices, so read the information about each candidate to help you make an informed decision. Note that there are no unopposed races this year. This is an issue raised every year in the comments that are part of the final election report. Again, the nominating committees did a great job in actively searching for multiple candidates for each position. Another question that comes up regularly (and has been asked this year already!), is “why aren’t all the positions on my ballot?” Great question. Here’s the deal: The President-elect is voted on by all eligible voting AIAA members. Every ballot will include that race. Regional Directors are elected by the AIAA members who reside in that region. Think of it like voting for the Senator from your state; folks from West Virginia don’t get to vote for the Senator representing Ohio. This year Directors for Regions III and VI are being elected, so if you live in Regions I, II, IV, V or VII, you will not be voting for a Regional Director in 2021. The Director-elect for the Young Professionals Group is selected by the members who are currently young professionals, that is 35 years of age and younger. The electorate for the Technical Group Directors within the Technical Activities Division is determined by the Professional Interest Codes (PIC) that each member gets to self-select. Every member can select up to three Professional Interest Codes that reflect what they are most interested in and/or the areas they support within the aerospace community. The Professional Interest Codes are connected to the various Technical Groups, so if you select a PIC that ties to one of the Director positions to be elected this year, then you get to vote in that specific race. There are two Technical Director positions on the ballot this year, Aerospace Sciences Group and the Aerospace Design and Structures Group. As it happens, due to my selection of Professional Interest Codes (I’m a Ground Test guy), I’m only eligible to vote for the Aerospace Sciences Director this year. So, when you look at your ballot, it is possible that the only position that you will have to vote for will be President-elect (if you don’t live in Region III or VI, if you are over the age or 35 and if your Professional Interest Codes do not align with the Aerospace Sciences or the Aerospace Design and Structures Groups, that will be the case!). Regardless of the number of positions that you can vote on, your input, your VOTE, is important. So take advantage of this opportunity and vote. Once you vote, you can also provide feedback on the process as well as questions or concerns about the election process. As the Election Committee Chair, I read all of the comments. In fact, based on the comments received over the past couple of years, the Election Satisfaction Committee was stood-up under the Council of Directors to look at the primary concerns of the members about our election process. Hey, this is important and we want the election process to be a worthwhile and meaningful part of AIAA governance. So that’s the story on the 2021 AIAA elections. The polls are open until February 19th. All the elections are important, but this time we will select the next President-elect. Let’s hear what you, the members, have to say. VOTE! Allen Arrington Election Committee Chair Speaker of the Council of Directors
