WHEELS Global Foundation

WHEELS Global Foundation WHEELS is a thought leadership program implementing Technology Enabled solutions in Water, Health, Energy, Education, Lifestyle and Sustainability fields.
(1)

In 2003, the first PAN IIT alumni conference was held in Silicon Valley, CA where Bill Gates, the keynote speaker recognized the alumni of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) as one of the leaders in innovation and technology globally. The event was covered by CBS in its famed “60 minutes” series by correspondent Lesley Stahl, making PAN IIT a household name in the United States. During the planning phase of “Give back to America” project in 2009, it was realized that a not for profit organization must be formed to distinguish from the mission of PAN IIT Alumni Foundation, giving rise to WHEELS Global Foundation (WGF). In 2013, WGF was founded as an independent 501c3 to provide innovative technology driven solutions to the challenges that affect the global rural population in six areas; Water, Healthcare, Energy, Education, Lifestyle and Sustainability. The organization partners with other national and international NGO’s and non-profit organizations, working in collaboration to provide assistance to a larger rural population globally. Our goal is to increase access, communication, and funding for technologies and/or charitable missions aimed at improving the living conditions of citizens across the globe through the implementation of sustainable programs.

Mission: "Technology Enabled Philanthropy" to give back to India, USA and to global communities by providing technological solutions to issues related with WHEELS six tracks - 'W'ater, 'H'ealth, 'E'nergy, 'E'ducation, 'L'ifestyles, and 'S'ustainability.

Featuring two eminent speakers in the field of Ayurveda, Yoga, and traditional healthcare for holistic living. These local remedies have served rural and rurban populations for centuries and form the basis for the Prime Minister's AYUSH program which stands for Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy. These practices, mostly followed by over 800 million people in India, are also finding favor in many western countries with increased emphasis on plant-based diets and products like coconut oil, turmeric, etc that are flooding mainstream food markets. The webinar will explore:

1. Ministry of AYUSH policies and mission for developing education, research, and propagation of indigenous, alternative medicine systems.

2. What policy considerations, infrastructure improvements, knowledge dissemination, supply chain modifications, and skills-development are to be expected to address the growing demand for traditional healthcare practices and for promoting rural entrepreneurship?

3. How can India preserve traditional practices, retain intellectual property, and capture innovation while the rest of the world seeks to embrace these systems?

4. Can technology help to scale AYUSH through skills development, certification processes, and adopting legal and ethical frameworks for practitioners?

Live Webinar -1: Visualizing Post COVID-19 World
On May 1st. 2020.
Speaker : Ambassador Pradeep Kapur.

We are happy to report that our first webinar received overwhelming response. We had approximately 150+ registrations and in the last hour it reached to 215+ but could only accommodate 100 attendees due to the limitations of our license agreement. Despite this limit, somehow we had 112-116 attendees who asked for and got an extended 30mins with active and interesting questions. Amb. Kapur's remarks and insights were most appreciated by a diverse audience of folks from industry, NGO practitioners, people working as CSR officers, IIT professors, current donors, and many others. A quick analysis of the attendees appears that our attendees today consisted of people from India, Canada, the USA, UK, and a few from Thailand.Thank you all who partcipated in it.

We are also happy to announce that the next event is on May 15 (Register here: https://bit.ly/2YJ9RA6 ) with Mr. Farid Khan, Chairman of the IEEE Smart Village Program in South Asia together with Mr. Ramchandra Rao Pappu, Program Director of Mission Samridhi, a highly regarded NGO in Chennai. About COVID-19:

Covid-19 (Coronavirus Disease 2019) is a life-threatening respiratory illness caused by a novel coronavirus that spreads from person to person. The Government of India and all countries affected by this virus are working hard to contain the spread by maintaining lockdowns and taking all necessary measures to provide medical supplies and hospital facilities to affected people. We should take measures recommended by CDC and other health officials such as maintaining social distance, staying indoors, washing hands frequently and drinking warm water. We will utilize your donations to support our implementation partner organizations for healthcare research grants, testing, procuring medical equipment, medical kits and assisting needy families. Your donations in any amount will be of great support and highly appreciated. Please share this message and help us raise funds so we may serve others. #socialdistancing #stayhome #stays.

We are not organized to ship clothes, blankets, food items, tents etc. Only cash donations are being accepted.

If you wish to make a donation, you may do so at www.wheelsglobal.org/Covid

Two great trips to schools in Kolkata serving children from local slums. EkTara in Kolkata, founded by Ms. Vinita Saraf and the Samaritan Mission School in Tikiapara just outside Kolkata near Howrah. Both visits were very inspirational and exemplary of how one person with a purpose and a vision can make a huge difference in a community devoid of hope and where children might have stopped dreaming.
Ektara uses principles and methods rooted in the Montessori system. The children are from local slums where most people work in tanneries or otherwise menial jobs with sub- subsistence wages. It took Vinita and her team immense challenges to overcome parental and social barriers to help their children learn English, math etc to get a fair shot to attend "regular" private schools fully supported by Ektara. Very commendable work!
At Tikiapara, Mamoon Akhtar took it upon himself to convert a neighborhood infested by crime and radical teachings to becoming honest, ambitious and educated individuals. The children in this school were most anxious to learn about us and career choices etc. A most unique experience to witness a transformative endeavor by one man's zeal and vision to serve not only his community but the greater interests of the country. A man with little education himself but a vision beyond expectations and imagination. He has peppered the school campus with inspirational posters of great philosophers and scientists - both western and Indian - and, charts and diagrams offering career choices and a clear pathway to achieve those goals. These children come from families where the parents might work as domestic help or ply local rickshaws. In one of the pictures, note the illegal, vertical, multi-storey slums disguised as apartments where there are 10 or more families sharing tiny spaces!! That is where many of these kids live and yet, thanks to the valiant efforts of Mamoon and his team - these kids dream and they dream big!!

Our visit to Ananthpur and Rural Development Trust (RDT) was an eye opener to the incredible work done by a visionary - Vicente Ferrer - and the continuing work by his son, Moncho Ferrer. WHEELS is proud to have sponsored a Van to serve women's entrepreneurship program to make disposable plates from Chenchu Leaves and to build a shelter to go with it. It will help to increase their productivity and create additional jobs. Ananthpur in Andhra is now the largest district in India. RDT has turned this sleepy village about 3-4hrs north of Bangalore into an amazing place with good schools, hospitals and bustling with various businesses and activities. The visit to a primary school with about 30+% students are visually impaired or disabled but attend classes with other children with outstanding outcomes. WHEELS expects to continue its engagement in other entrepreneurship programs in the village with our partners at IEEE and iCreate.
