National Elementary Honor Society - NEHS

National Elementary Honor Society - NEHS NEHS is a school-based recognition program for students in grades 4, 5, and 6, established in 2008 by NASSP and NAESP.
(5)

The National Elementary Honor Society (NEHS) was established in 2008 by the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) in cooperation with the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP) to recognize elementary students in both public and non-public elementary schools for their outstanding academic achievement and demonstrated personal responsibility, to provide meaningful service to the school and community, and to develop essential leadership skills in the students of elementary schools. In 2014, NEHS became a full partnership between NASSP and the NAESP Foundation. This site is designed to share news from chapters, ideas for chapter projects, and otherwise support the mission of NEHS. Interested parties wishing to communicate with the NEHS office can email [email protected] or visit www.nehs.org for additional information. Also visit www.nassp.org or www.naesp.org for more information about the parent organizations for NEHS.

NEHS Highlight: Distance Learning

The NEHS students from Teaneck Public Schools are making videos of themselves reading a picture book. They have to practice to read fluently, with expression and meaning, and they have to make sure the illustrations from the book are clearly visible. The videos are then posted on their school website for the students to watch. This is a way for the NEHS students to "stay in touch" with other school mates.

NEHS Highlight: Chiles Annual Cereal Drive!

Many families rely on Hillsborough County Public Schools to provide free breakfast throughout the school year, and food banks struggle over the summer months to provide breakfast foods for families. Lawton Chiles Elementary School's National Elementary Honor Society (NEHS) students took matters into their own hands and challenged their school to collect 1000 boxes of cereal to benefit Feeding Tampa Bay. Students were encouraged to bring in just one box of cereal to benefit families in Tampa. Every day, NEHS students collected cereal from donation boxes in each grade level hall and tallied the boxes. At the end of the drive, the winner was announced and NEHS donated several boxes of cereal to the lunchroom to enhance a grade level breakfast celebration. NEHS students bagged the collected cereal, delivered, and volunteered on a Saturday morning at Feeding Tampa Bay. The winning grade level, who brought in the most cereal over three weeks, won a cereal party and a non-uniform day!

Project of Excellence Highlight: Penny Drive for the Bahamas
After Hurricane Dorian devastated the Bahamas, NEHS members from Cypress Ridge Elementary wanted to do something to help the families who were affected by the storm. As a result, they organized a penny drive for the month of October. The incentive to participate was that the grade level that collected the most money would win an ice cream party. At the end of the month, they counted the total number of pennies raised and they received nearly $2,500 that was then donated to the Red Cross. http://bit.ly/2TKNtEj

Project of Excellence Highlight: Rescue the Hunter Stephenson Canine and Felines Rescue Center

During October, NEHS members from Owens Cross Roads School visited every class in our school with a presentation that educated students about The Hunter Stephenson Center. NEHS members created flyers with need supplies on them and supplied every student in their school with a flyer to take home. They made announcements during their morning school announcements and made posters publicizing their pet supply drive. Their efforts paid off, and by November 1, they received over three car loads of supplies for The Hunter Stephenson Center. http://bit.ly/37hVuE6

I'm having my first meeting of the year with my new and old members. What would be a fun way to start?
Keone'ula Elementary School just had their induction ceremony on October 23, 2019. There were 16 inductees - ten 4th graders and six 5th graders. Our district council member, state senator, and several principals in our district attended!
Looking for some feedback and/or suggestions. Our NEHS chapter in Arizona just chartered last year and initiated our first group in May. Our school this year moved to piloting Standards Based Grading rather than grades. Other than Self Management skills, are there any other chapters whose schools use standards based grading and if so, what are you using for applicant eligibility?
In the Age of AI, Much of the Data Schools Force Kids to Memorize is a Waste of Time
Does anyone have any resources they could share with for students? I am thinking about starting a chapter and looking for resources for kids to use to apply and teachers to use to recommend a child.
