Britain Introduces Measures to Curb Street Harassment and Violence Against Women

While I’m glad more people are paying attention to #streetharassment, I don’t think what they propose will do very much to actually stop it. Especially if they can’t even appropriately manage under-reported r**e cases. Why should anyone report street harassers? And what good is more lighting at truly stopping harassers? After over a decade of doing this work, I just don’t see how these measures will stop the behavior and actually #stopstreetharassment.

The proposals come months after Sarah Everard, a 33-year-old marketing executive, was r**ed and murdered. She disappeared as she walked home from a friend’s house in South London.

Metro Group Backs Temporary Ban Of People Who Commit Weapons And S*x Crimes In System

#US - The DC Metro system wants to ban people who commit "s*x crimes" or weapons crime from riding the metro. The ACLU and us, SSH, spoke out against this plan. One of our concerns is that it's not very enforceable and won't actually do much to keep riders safe. This is especially true when it was recently revealed that many reports of s*xual harassment/assault on the system aren't even being investigated (https://dcist.com/story/21/07/01/metro-transit-police-inspector-general-investigate-complaints/)

Thanks to our board member Lani for speaking to NPR about this story! https://www.npr.org/local/305/2021/07/16/1016834137/metro-group-backs-temporary-ban-of-people-who-commit-weapons-and-s*x-crimes-in-system

The full board will vote on the proposal at its next meeting.

84% of female runners have experienced street harassment in London, study finds

#UK: "More than 80% of female runners have experienced street harassment in London, a new study claims.

Researchers from St. Mary’s University, Twickenham, interviewed 121 runners from across 26 of the capital’s 32 boroughs, finding that 84% of women experienced some form of street harassment, compared to 50% of men.

The most common forms of harassment were catcalls, propositioning, name calling, and non-verbal expressions like wolf whistles or winking, the study said. But a number of participants also reported more extreme forms of harassment, like being groped or physically attacked. 30% of female runners surveyed reported having been followed by somebody either on foot or in a car. "

Nearly a quarter of runners surveyed said they felt very or somewhat unsafe while running in the capital

'Hot Vax Summer' isn't an excuse to harass women

#Europe: "The change in atmosphere since Covid-19 restrictions have loosened in Germany, as well as in the UK, has been undeniable – but a darker side to being back amongst the general public has also emerged.

As one friend put it, ‘all of the letchy men have come out of the cracks.’

This same friend went on to describe how she’d been increasingly propositioned by men since lockdown eased. I was instantly able to relate. Recently, my days feel punctuated by leering waves, inappropriate comments or incessant staring from strangers.

It seems that some men are also feeling the Hot Vax Summer energy, which has manifested in them s*xually propositioning and harassing people as they go about their everyday lives. After spending the best part of the last year inside, simply being out in public again appears to have prompted an increase in this type of behaviour.

I asked my friends if they were also experiencing this increase in s*xual harassment, and got an overwhelming response. One described riding the train home in Berlin one night, when a man slapped her ass – she yelled at him to back off and he simply laughed at her."

All of the letchy men have come out of the cracks.

Spain approves sweeping s*xual violence protection bill: ‘We don’t want any woman to feel alone’

#Spain: “In another first, the bill considers street harassment a crime punishable with house arrest or community service. It will be considered a minor offense to “address another person with expressions, behavior or propositions of a s*xual nature that create an objectively humiliating, hostile or intimidating situation for the victim,” who will have to file a complaint.

Sources in the Equality Ministry said that “it’s not about someone calling you beautiful as you’re walking down the street, or about a random man’s misplaced comment. We’re talking about your daughter standing in line at the bank, and the guy ahead of her starts ma********ng in her face.”

The future ‘Only Yes Means Yes’ law will consider s*x acts without explicit consent as r**e, and provide financial assistance to victims of abuse

Trigger Warning --

#USA: "The 23-year-old victim was with a friend leaving a restaurant around 4:35 a.m. when the suspect began catcalling her, according to police.

The victim’s friend told the man to back off, but he followed them instead, police said. He then snuck up behind the victim on West 46th Street between Eighth and Ninth avenues and slashed her across the chest and right hand with a sharp object, according to the NYPD."

#StreetHarassment is NEVER a compliment. There's always an underlying threat that we must acknowledge. We must work to make public places safer for everyone!

I do love getting older. Here are five infuriating reasons why

"Being a woman. The risk of terrible stuff happening is still out there, of course. But the chances of having a vaguely uncomfortable time have, in my experience, vastly diminished: I’m spared the street harassment and grisly attempts at flirting. My ageing face in repose seems to promise not erotic possibility, but a boner-killing monologue on compost. How could I not love my marionette lines, sagging chin and general air of deep weariness, when they offer this glorious freedom?"

A new scientific study has revealed what we all knew, deep down – you can’t stop the ageing process. But it does come with some serious benefits

Keira Knightley: Every Woman I Know Has Been Harassed

"Though Knightley has previously stayed quiet about her personal experiences, she says that recent conversations about street harassment made her see the situation differently. "It was when women started listing all the precautions they take when they walk home to make sure they’re safe, and I thought, I do every single one of them, and I don’t even think about it. It’s fu***ng depressing."
Referring to the discussions around the death of 33-year-old Sarah Everard, Knightley also spoke in favour of Baroness Jenny Jones’ stance on the ways in which women could be made to feel safer in Britain: "I love that politician who said there ought to be a curfew for men and men were outraged, and you think – but there’s a curfew for women and there always has been."

In a new interview with Harper's Bazaar the actress called the situation "fu***ng depressing".

What I Gained From Self-Defense Class in the Wake of Anti-Asian Attacks

"For the first time in 12 years of living comfortably in Manhattan, I became afraid to walk the city’s streets as a Filipino woman. Whenever I stepped outside, I thought of the attacker who shoved an older man to the sidewalk in Oakland or the one who senselessly beat and kicked a Filipino woman near Times Square. I wondered what I would do if it happened to me.

So I organized the class, hoping my friends and I would pick up a few tricks and perhaps emerge feeling less helpless. Psychology researchers have found that self-defense training can increase confidence in women, improve mental health and decrease feelings of vulnerability. But I have since learned that self-defense offers much more than skills and confidence; it can foster a powerful sense of agency."

Perspective | Some women mask up to deflect attention, but what we really want is freedom

"For women, the benefits of facial obfuscation are multifarious. What better way to hide your maskne? Some women have reported experiencing less street harassment while masked, and that fewer strangers have told them to smile. Continuing to wear a mask signals that you’re a woman who cares about others. Masking can be a form of protest and defiance against state surveillance, an ideologically fertile plot of shared territory between left-wing and libertarian feminists. Will continuing to wear a mask outdoors become a “privacy setting” for a woman’s face? Is it possible to opt out of being perceived in public?"

Why are we having the same conversation 40 years on?

#UK: “My daughter is just fourteen, about a month ago she experienced a young male harassing her in the street. She arrived home from school in floods of tears.

“It brought back memories from my own experience of being harassed in the streets. I was running through a park and I was followed by a man in a van, flashing his lights at me.

“It was pretty scary. This was like in 2000/2002 and then almost twenty years later my daughter is experiencing similar harassment… It makes you angry. Makes you really upset that your child cannot walk home from school without experiencing some form of harassment.”

no one should be harrassed on the street based on how they look, especially in a s*xualized way. i have come to understand that such random vocalizations are traumatic and denigrating to the self esteem of those persons it has been directed towards. i have never seen the need to loudly call out that someone is attractive. even as a child i understood that it was intrusive and disturbing.
Hello everyone! I am participating in a 3 day product design hackathon and my team is designing a solution to address the problem of harassment faced by people, both online and offline. We are conducting a confidential, anonymous survey to learn more about harassment, across various demographics like gender, age and location. https://forms.gle/hsajJgwMYrVpNepi7 I would really appreciate it if you can take 2 mins of your time and take the survey and let us know about your experience. We aim for this survey's results to be confidential, and no personally identifiable data will be asked. Thanks again for helping us in our quest to better understand how harassment happens!
Women, mothers, kids, Asian people, immigrants, and pretty much anyone who is different in any way should be especially vigilant in crowds with a lot of strangers as they can be randomly attacked by a stranger who after the assault can just slip into the crowd and disappear.
Street harassment and assaults go on in Canada as well. They are not just done by white men but also done by people of color, Muslims, etc. People of color are human beings too with prejudices.

Hello! I'm a third year Performing Arts student For my dissertation I am conducting research into how women feel in public spaces. I'm looking into the safety techniques women use to protect themselves (eg keys between fingers), as well as any experiences you may have had in a public space. When a woman walks alone, she is constantly thinking. Thinking about what may happen to her and how she can protect herself. For instance, how do you feel walking home at night on your own? Maybe you feel completely confident or maybe this fills you with anxiety. Maybe you've had a bad experience and want to tell your story. What ever you have to say, I want to hear from you. Please go into as much or as little detail as you like. Talking about s*xual harassment can be hard. But if you feel open and comfortable, I would love to hear from you. Everything will be made anonymous so no need to worry! I acknowledge that this happens to men also, but I need to be specific with my research. For this reason I have chosen to focus on women Please follow this link and submit your stories/thoughts below Thank you!:)
Even during a pandemic, harassment is a thing Oct. 23, 2020 at 12:21 pm Updated Oct. 23, 2020 at 2:36 pm By Natalie Dupille Special to The Times There are a very few glimmers of light to come out of this pandemic. One such glimmer is the amount of catcalling and street harassment many of us experience on a daily basis has gone down significantly in part due to mask wearing (no one can see if we’re giving them a begrudging smile or not), and for those of us fortunate enough to be working from home, there are simply fewer opportunities to be harassed..... ....Reports of anti-mask harassment have become commonplace on social media, in the news and in conversations among friends. In my networks alone, stories range from a woman at the dog park who is admonished by anti-mask advocates for “being a sheep,” then called a racial slur, to customers in stores who politely request their fellow shoppers don a mask quickly becoming the victims of verbal abuse. A genderqueer person on a plane who asks the people nearest them to put masks on is met with profanity.. Because the federal government has failed to instate a mask mandate, the burden of rule enforcement falls onto the workers who engage with the public every day — workers who are majority female, according to Data USA, and faced with consumers used to a “customer is always right” attitude..... ...It took a pandemic for me to nearly forget harassment is a thing. And it took a pandemic to remind me that the president and his followers will continue to callously utilize s*xism, racism and fear to further a dangerously anti-science agenda. Natalie Dupille is a Seattle-based cartoonist, writer and illustrator. Her work has appeared in The New Yorker, WIRED and The Washington Post.
