Rescue Reston

Rescue Reston Rescue Reston is a grassroots community organization that is committed to defending Reston's two golf courses which have land use designations of private recreation use, more specifically to remain as golf courses.

We were brought to action by a July 27, 2012 proposal from the owners of the Reston National Golf Course to turn the golf course's open space into a residential development. We strongly oppose this action based on Reston's history of communal open spaces and long standing zoning ordinances. A significant chapter in the battle to rezone the Reston National Golf Course came to an end on Friday, March 4, 2016, after attorneys for the golf course filed a letter with the Supreme Court of Virginia indicating they would not pursue an appeal of the Fairfax County Circuit Court granting a motion for summary judgment filed by Fairfax County and supported by Reston Association and individual homeowners and cluster associations abutting the golf course.

Mission: Rescue Reston works to defend Reston’s recreational green space at the North Course, Hidden Creek Country Club, and at the South Course, Reston National Golf Course, a 166-acre Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program Golf Course on the Chesapeake Bay watershed. The land use designation of both properties is private recreation use, more specifically to remain as golf courses.

The long rolling fairways bordered by the course’s trees and natural areas create what is called an “edge habitat,” a perfect place for deer, fox, rabbits, Robins and other birds. This type of refuge is also highly endangered in Fairfax County. Wildlife needs corridors like this to live, hunt, and pass through #savetheplanet #savethegolfcourse #restonva

#FictionFriday Wheelock Added Fake Trees and Green Space for RA Presentation. Why should anyone trust what Wheelock says when they use these "shady" tactics?

Red circles added by us to show where Wheelock photoshopped in trees and erased two existing apartment communities to falsely claim Reston already has enough green space. (9/27/2018 RA mtg) Add your voice at: RescueReston.org/action-center

This is an important election for Reston. We need a board that can understand the issues, advocate for reston and is invested in the community. I'm hoing to use my 15mins of fame to bring attention to key issues that impact us.. Please join the conversation on the importance of protecting our golf courses with rescue restons very own Connie Hartke and others on Sunday Mar 8th 3pm to 5pm. Hope to see you there!!!
I wholeheartedly support keeping Reston’s two golf courses as they are. Reston is one of 20 cities globally that has been designated a Biophilic Community (https://www.biophiliccities.org/our-vision). As such, we as a community need to continue the work that is already underway to ensure that Reston is at the forefront of planning for and adapting to climate change. Our golf courses add significantly to our efforts to mitigate environmental destruction so evident at most development sites around the metro area. Open space golf courses are necessary for multiple important reasons: • Reston is a planned community with hidden density which must be counterbalanced by zero density spaces such as our two golf courses. The huge densities recently approved in the Transit Station Areas (TSA’s) make this zero-density open space even more important. • Fairfax County’s own requirements for rec facilities predicates two golf courses. Golf is thriving on these two courses despite efforts by owners of both to sell out to residential developers. • Homes in adjacent neighborhoods were planned and are occupied by persons who paid premium prices for peaceful, natural golf course views. Their county tax bills also reflect this relationship! • All Reston residents have use and enjoyment of RA’s walking paths that traverse both courses.
I have a simple message: protect both golf courses and don't develop in open spaces in Reston. Go to electberry.com for more!
For all dog lovers in the county, please take this survey:

Importance of natural space inherent in Reston National Golf Course emphasized by Restonian Juliette Rossant as she describes the vision of Reston by her father, Reston’s master planner James Rossant on WAMU Radio’s Kojo Nnamdi Show:
Does Rescue Reston plan to endorse a candidate for Hunter Mill Supervisor?
I just ran across this and between the article and the comments, it was pretty frustrating.
Thanks to Frank Harrell, voice behind this 1987 promotional video for Reston Association, The Difference is Reston. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iBivAn2R6aw It serves as a gentle reminder that we can not give away an inch of our open space.
Hi everyone - thanks to everyone who participated in the Rescue Reston North Course Committee Community Survey! Initial results were reported at the Reston Association board meeting on July 26th 96% of respondents answered that they want the North Course Committee to protect Hidden Creek's designation as a golf course. If you participated in the survey already, we thank you! The community survey remains open. Make your voices heard by participating.
There's discussion from time to time about Reston becoming a town or city so as to better control and guide its own interests. I've said that I know it's been discussed since I was a kid. Recently came across a doc from back then about the topic. GMU has an extensive collection of items about Reston; this was just one.
