Okay you garage mechanics, this is asking you to help take stuff apart! How hard can that be?

Getting antsy working from home? Spending too much time on your laptop? Come get your hands dirty at our shop! We need experienced mechanics--youth or adult--to take apart donated bikes and repurpose their parts for us. Demand for repairs and used parts is high, so you'll be doing us a huge favor by putting your mechanical skills to work on our patio. Sign up here for a slot any Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday from 1:00-5:00pm through October 1st: https://bit.ly/stripabike

Lovettsville Virginia Gold Star Families Memorial Monument

This happened this morning in Lovettsville. We didn't hear about it until after it occurred. But if you're riding out there this weekend, take a photo and send it to us - let us know whether it lends itself to a bike destination for a tour. Be safe! http://hwwmohf.org/monuments/lovettsville-va.html

A new Gold Star Families Memorial Monument (GSFMM) honoring the families of servicemen and women who sacrificed their lives while serving in the military is currently being planned in Lovettsville Virginia.

Biking friends -- The relapse and overdose rate has increased by 30% since March 2020. Mental health issues related to our lock down and the pandemic are especially hard for people with depression. NAMI, The National Alliance on Mental Health has a 24-hour helpline: 800-950-6264.

We who bike know that biking can change a person's outlook and get them 'over the hump' when they're struggling. I challenge each of us to think about a friend they've not biked with in a while and reach out to them today -- do they need to go on a socially distanced ride? Do they just need to get that text/call/email/message that lets them know one of their bike buddies cares?

And if you're that person who needs someone to ride with, please contact the club. You matter and biking with friendly people can help.

This is the reverse of the 70 mile route I posted the other day. I prefer doing it this way so the climb back to Reston/Herndon is on the W&OD late in the day rather than the Fairfax County Parkway Trail. There are more services available and if you just can't do one more pedal stroke, you can hop on Metro. Keep in mind that there is work going on to improve parts of our trails so there might be detours - just follow the signs and if it's not obvious - ask someone! https://ridewithgps.com/routes/29081576

If you're on the W&OD this weekend, be sure to stop fully at the Isaac Newton Square crossing:

FABB has been working with the Fairfax County Police Department (FCPD) to improve bicycle education among police, bicyclists, and motorists. One result of that effort is a planned socially-distanced bicycle/pedestrian safety event hosted by FCPD on Saturday, August 29 from 9-11am adjacent to the W&OD Trail in Reston. Police will be set up next to the bike lockers at the Isaac Newton Square access road. This is a good opportunity to discuss bike safety with Fairfax County Police officers and county officials. FABB will also be present. Safety literature, snacks, hand sanitizer, masks, and water will be available. Please wear a mask.

Goose Creek fixed!

Turns out our fence contractor *was* able to make it out Wednesday: No more bump on the Goose Creek bridge fence!

In case you've wondered about the excessive weed growth on the W&OD, this is from the HQ:

With respect to the growth being denser than normal this year, in part thanks to the lack of a summer dry spell, we are aware of the situation and that it's sometimes going to be a case of whack-a-mole as to when we can address a particular location. Unless a whole lane of the trail is obstructed and needs immediate attention, it'll have to be triaged, and may have to wait until the growing season ends before we can finally catch up. We're operating with very reduced staff on an abnormally crowded trail and are frequently diverted to various other projects such as removing downed trees, installing benches, etc. Combined with our routine trash removal twice a week which takes up most of every Monday and Thursday, that usually leaves us with only Tuesday and Wednesday to mow and clear brush, assuming it's not raining that day (or the night before, for mowing), which lately has not been a good assumption.

Equestrian Trails = Gravel Trails. If you like to ride those, heads up!

Another project starting Monday on the W&OD Trail, Dominion Energy will begin work on the gravel trail in the Ashburn area, a precursor to their coming line work there. As they lay and compact stonedust, expect occasional temporary equestrian trail closures for the following three weeks.

Tonight I cleared all the branches and limbs on Lawyers going east towards Wash DC from Fox Mill Road all the way to Birdfoot. There were some branches sticking out from the VA Dominion Power as well as some branches that got run over and were scattered all over the bike lane. Some group rides had to deviate out in the car lane to avoid. No mas, for now at least.

Your club at work in the community. In a tribute to early RBC member B.J. Silvey, RBC joined with others to place bike parking in the island at The Bike Lane's Reston location. B.J. was a long time customer, a long time member of W&OD Trail patrol, and a supporter of every athletic event that came along in Reston. We couldn't do the ceremony of unveiling due to the pandemic, but I didn't want it to go unnoticed by our members who stop by there for beer or coffee! Your support for the Century over the years has made this type of community action possible. Thank you!

The region’s top transportation board has endorsed a proposal for a network of trails stretching across the greater Washington region, from Frederick, Md., to Prince William County, Va., that would expand the amount of off-road bicycle and pedestrian pathways to 1,400 miles. The extensive trail system would more than double the size of the existing network by adding 755 miles to the current 645 miles of trails, improving connectivity between neighborhoods and public transit, commercial districts and jobs, said officials with the Transportation Planning Board (TPB) of the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments. The proposal would offer greater access to clean, inexpensive and reliable transportation to millions of area residents seeking options beyond vehicles and public transportation, board members said.
Hi Reston Bike Club! First off we miss y’all. Second, we are looking for a starter (used ok) road bike for our nephew who is visiting from LA this week. He is 6’5”, 200lbs. Please let us know if you have any leads or where we can get a good deal. He’s only here for a week. Thanks so much! Tya and Kimberly
Anyone have use for a pair Shimano shoes? Brand new (though in a different box). Men's size 42, SPD, three velcro straps. Free for pickup, though you're welcome to make a donation to herndoncares.org.
Finally bought a used Trek Domane 4.5. Where is the best place to get a fitting. What does it cost?

Greetings to one and all! Any suggestions for very low traffic trails anywhere within an hour or so drive from Reston. I have couple of extremely agitated kids suffering from QTS (Quarantine Traumatic Syndrome) that I need to get out, while maintain distance from humanity, before they go completely off the rails :-) Thank You!
