Cedar Lane Bridge wasn't open at 10 ... so we continued on Cottage down to Gallows. The guys there said come back after 1030. At 11 we were on the OTHER side of the bridge (Hilltop Rd) and those guys said, "not until 3". The moral of the story is: be prepared to add miles when visiting "bridge opening today" sites.

RBC-298 (10) Themed-Holiday Lights Ride

We were going to lead a Holiday Lights group ride, but given the rising number of Covid-19 cases in Fairfax County, we decided instead to offer the route up for those who would like to see lights in their own small groups. This route is contained within the Fox Mill neighborhood where they're having a light display contest this year so people have gotten VERY creative. It's only 10 miles so enjoy! Happy Holidays from Reston Bike Club! https://ridewithgps.com/routes/34837127…

Tips on how to dress for cold weather while cycling

Seems timely

"There's no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothes." That's the mantra of Scandinavian parents raising healthy, resilient youngsters unafraid of the outdoors. Same refrain for cold weather bikers, too.

We have winterized all our water fountains for the season. Fountains at Buckthorn Lane, the Vienna Train Station, the Broad St bridge, Lawson Rd and the Purcellville train station have all been shut off. Those at Lee Hwy and Sunset Hills Rd were already off due to various issues, while the Cedar Lane fountain is an all-season fountain.

Dog bite incident in FC on trail. Police Seek Dog Owner in Biting Case :: We are looking for a dog that bit a 12 year old boy on Friday, November 13 at about 1:00 p.m. on the Washington and Old Dominion Trail near West End Park (about W. Broad St. and West St.).
The person is described by the boy as a white female, about 50 to 60 years old with white or gray hair, wearing white or gray clothing. She was walking two dogs that the boy describes as possibly a Golden Retriever and a black dog. The boy was on his bike when one of the dogs bit him. The owner apologized but may not have realized that the boy was bitten.
If the dog's rabies vaccination cannot be verified, the boy may have to undergo rabies inoculations.
If you have any information regarding this dog, please contact the City of Falls Church Police at 703-241-5050 (TTY 711) immediately.

Cranksgiving NOVA 2020

Cranksgivings are really fun bike events. Originally started by bike messengers as a kind of alley cat that does good for other people, this one was put together by a bunch of biking friends in the Arlington Forum -- regular people like us! It involves biking, treasure hunting, and getting food to people who need it in your own community and participation is FREE (albeit ticketed). Check it out if you need a purpose to bike on the 21st!

Part food drive, part scavenger hunt, part bike ride = a really fun time!

Be careful in the west bound bike lane of Lawyers Road. Detritus from down trees, lots of leaves, and the acorns are a definite slip hazard! The stretch between Birdfoot and Soapstone is the worst. Seriously, the acorns are so thick on the ground they're like biking over marbles.

During our Night Light giveaway, we discovered another need ... and our club members and supporters are amazingly generous folks. So here it is:
DONATE YOUR GENTLY USED
COLD & WET WEATHER GEAR
RBC is collecting gently used cold and wet weather gear to donate to the patrons of the Centreville Labor Resource Center. These riders use bikes for transportation out of necessity in all types of weather.

If you’re upgrading or changing your size or style, please consider donating coats, jackets, full finger gloves, and booties that are in decent shape. (They don’t need padded shorts or jerseys). Old working lights and locks with keys are also welcome. Please limit your donations to CLEAN items with a good deal of wear left in them. They have a very limited capacity to store anything, so we will collect only 1 box from each of the following locations.
There will be collection boxes at the following locations from November 7-17.

A-1 Cycling, 2451 Centreville Rd., Herndon

Green Lizard Cycling, 718 Lynn St., Herndon

Please check hours of the shops at their sites and respect their COVID-19 measures when dropping items off.

We welcome member involvement in this effort. If you would like to help with delivery of the items to the Labor Resource Center, please contact Kelley Westenhoff, westenhoff at gmail dot com for details or pm me.

Tuesday Virtual Ride Week #4 starts tonight at 5:30pm.
Join us for a leg of this event, DC to PGH.
The region’s top transportation board has endorsed a proposal for a network of trails stretching across the greater Washington region, from Frederick, Md., to Prince William County, Va., that would expand the amount of off-road bicycle and pedestrian pathways to 1,400 miles. The extensive trail system would more than double the size of the existing network by adding 755 miles to the current 645 miles of trails, improving connectivity between neighborhoods and public transit, commercial districts and jobs, said officials with the Transportation Planning Board (TPB) of the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments. The proposal would offer greater access to clean, inexpensive and reliable transportation to millions of area residents seeking options beyond vehicles and public transportation, board members said.
Hi Reston Bike Club! First off we miss y’all. Second, we are looking for a starter (used ok) road bike for our nephew who is visiting from LA this week. He is 6’5”, 200lbs. Please let us know if you have any leads or where we can get a good deal. He’s only here for a week. Thanks so much! Tya and Kimberly
Anyone have use for a pair Shimano shoes? Brand new (though in a different box). Men's size 42, SPD, three velcro straps. Free for pickup, though you're welcome to make a donation to herndoncares.org.
Finally bought a used Trek Domane 4.5. Where is the best place to get a fitting. What does it cost?
I'm in need of a cue sheet from the RBC 2019 Century as I'm planning on riding from Lovettsville to Sterling. Went to RBC website but it's not available.
Anyone been riding around Nokesville recently? Wondering how the traffic is...please advise
Take a walk through a great bike shop in Danville, Va.
Just thought i’d share.
