A note from our Chair:

Dear Members and Friends,

Our board and member volunteers have been brainstorming ways to hold some version of the century for months now, adjusting plans as the pandemic situation evolves and new information emerges. We wanted to courageously move forward with a 2020 RBC Century Ride and we tried to find a way to make it work. Our final go/no-go decision was on June 3 at our monthly executive board meeting. With open minds we explored every option for how to make our signature event happen. In the end, we had to concede that it was not to be.

Therefore, sadly, I am announcing that the Reston Bicycle Club will not hold the Reston Century Ride in 2020. Thursday, June 11 at 5 pm, we will host a virtual happy hour where we can discuss our specific reasoning for cancelling. An email notification will be sent or please Sign-up here.

So, what’s next? We look forward to resuming outdoor group rides when it is safe to do so. Northern Virginia remains in Phase One for now. As the situation continues to evolve, we will assess the safety of resuming group rides. We are exploring ideas for substitute events for our group rides and the century and would love to hear ideas from our members too. If you have ideas you would like us to explore, the happy hour would be a great time to discuss those ideas.

For now, I hope you are riding your bikes in whatever way is safe for you, whether that means solo, with a small group of known people or virtually. Whatever you are doing, please keep in mind this guidance from USA Cycling, found here. Have fun but be mindful that we are not through this thing yet. I look forward to us being able to ride together again soon.

Ride with care,

Kathryn Troutman

Well done, biking community! The most important part of this article: The week of May 18-24, a group prompted 64 people to write in and oppose this plan. Another group of 253 people saw positive potential to improve our region’s multi-modal (bike and walking) infrastructure, and wrote in to support the improvements.

We win!

A wider W&OD trail is up for funding, but again faces opposition

URGENT!!! Do you like the idea of decreasing W&OD congestion? Please read this and act accordingly!
--------------
(From FABB) I want to emphasize the urgency of submitting comments in support of the Northern Virginia Transportation Authority awarding a grant to NOVA Parks for widening the W&OD Trail in Arlington. NOVA Parks reports that as of this morning (Friday, May 22) an organized group has submitted 200 messages in opposition to the project. Only six messages have been submitted in support.

The reasons for support as well as the opposition to the project are presented clearly in today's article by Gillian Burgess in Greater Greater Washington https://ggwash.org/view/77745/a-wider-wod-trail-is-up-for-funding-but-again-faces-opposition.

If you support the widening of the W&OD in Arlington and separate paths for walkers and bikers, please send your comments to the Northern Virginia Transportation Authority by email or the online submission form, www.TheNoVaAuthority.org/SYP-comment. The project is "Arlington W&OD Trail Enhancements" and the final day for comments is Sunday May 24th.

Here is the link minus all the tracking metadata:

https://thenovaauthority.org/SYP-comment/

At that link, scroll all the way to the bottom to find the online submission form.

A proposal to widen the Washington and Old Dominion Trail in Arlington has reached the next phase to potentially get funding. As with the last time it came up for public review, it’s also facing some pushback from people, under the banner of concern over trees and the environment.

Governor Northam signed the following two bills which will become effective in 2021.

HB874 – Distracted Driving (Hands Free). The lone bill to begin in 2021.

HB1705 – Stop for Pedestrians. This bill also prohibits a driver from passing a vehicle stopped at a crosswalk.
The governor proposed amendments to two of the bills. The General Assembly will reconvene in a socially-distanced manner later this week to consider and most like approve the amendments.

He also signed the following two bills which will become effective in July of this year (2020)

HB1442 – Photo Enforcement. Enables Automated Photo Speed Enforcement in school and work zones. A minor amendment proposed by the governor was suggested by the Virginia State Police.

SB 437 – Vulnerable Road User. The minor amendment proposed by the governor was suggested by the bill’s sponsor, 36th District Senator Scott Surovell, to ensure that children in bike trailers were included.

Don't know about you but we are seeing a LOT of people who pretty apparently don't normally bike and many have their helmets on wrong. If it seems appropriate, here's a guide to help you share info. And for those of us who ride often, don't forget to snug up your helmet straps periodically. Every time you wear the helmet, they are under tension, so over time, they loosen. The last thing you need right now is an ER visit because your helmet wasn't on properly!

We are operating with bare bones minimal staffing during this times so please bear with us. We'll continue mowing eastward weather permitting. Please use caution around our mowing equipment should you encounter park staff during your travels.

Thank you and stay safe!

So much they can get done quickly when people aren't around!

We are happy to report the exciting news that the Byron Memorial pedestrian bridge repair at Harpers Ferry is moving forward. The heavily traveled bridge was damaged in a train derailment last December. A contractor has been retained, and preparations are underway (purchase/staging of materials, etc.). CSX is facilitating the repair.
The estimated start date for repair is now May 11, with a projected finish date near the end of July. A shuttle service will be operated if the economy opens before then.

Finally bought a used Trek Domane 4.5. Where is the best place to get a fitting. What does it cost?
I'm in need of a cue sheet from the RBC 2019 Century as I'm planning on riding from Lovettsville to Sterling. Went to RBC website but it's not available.

Greetings to one and all! Any suggestions for very low traffic trails anywhere within an hour or so drive from Reston. I have couple of extremely agitated kids suffering from QTS (Quarantine Traumatic Syndrome) that I need to get out, while maintain distance from humanity, before they go completely off the rails :-) Thank You!
Good advice from semi-local phenom Jeremiah Bishop:
Hey RBC gravel gods/goddesses. Here is an excellent event to put on your calendar. Registration is open for the 14 June Loudoun 1725 Gravel Grinder.
