Teacher Letters: Why Are Students With Disabilities So Invisible in STEM Education?

Society, parents, and other students need to understand that students with disabilities are as capable of academic achievement as any other student given the proper accommodations that allow for success.

In the United States, we lament the lack of diversity in STEM fields and in teacher education, but many of our actions as educators continue to "weed out" students from nondominant communities and those who are differently abled.

NJTEEA is proud to present the 2020 Excellence Award for High School Teaching to Charles 'Chuck' Seipp. Chuck is the Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum & Instruction for Roxbury Public Schools. Since beginning his role in 2016 Chuck has worked with other educators to create new courses on Design Thinking and Structural Design & Fabrication and expanded the middle school cycle program. Chuck oversaw the planning and development of a state of the art Robotics Lab and a Structural Design & Fabrication lab to introduce students to various aspects of the skilled trades. An except from Chuck's nomination reads: "Dr. Seipp believes that one of the most important things that a school district can do for its students is to provide them with experiences that prepare them for a future where each student can explore and pursue passions and dreams...In a day in age where it is not uncommon for Board of Educations across the country to close down shop classes, Chuck instead led our school district to open up two new classrooms. The Technology & Engineering Education program is alive and well in Roxbury Public Schools because in large part to Chuck's leadership, dedication, and vision".

We look forward to celebrating Chuck and other 2020 award recipients at an awards banquet in the fall.

NJTEEA is proud to present the 2020 New Teacher Excellence Award to Lauren Coker. Lauren is a 2018 graduate of Millersville University where she studied Technology & Engineering Education with a concentration in Engineering Design. Lauren recently completed her second year teaching at Cinnaminson High School where she has revamped their technology & engineering education program. Lauren has developed new courses and written curriculum that aims to strengthen students' technological literacy, foster their creativity, and encourage critical thinking. The sequence of these courses allows students to strengthen their ability to apply and document the design process, effectively use tools, equipment, and software, and investigate the designed worlds of technology. In addition to her teaching responsibilities, Lauren was recently elected secretary of NJTEEA.

We look forward to celebrating Lauren and other 2020 award recipients at an awards banquet in the fall.

NJTEEA is proud to present the 2020 College Student Excellence Award to Brooke Martin. Brooke recently completed her Junior year at The College of New Jersey, where she majors in Technology & Engineering Education. Although Brooke's professional career only recently started, she has already presented at conferences at both the local and national level and is involved in the STEM Educators Society at TCNJ. This past year Brooke severed as the volunteer coordinator for the New Jersey state VEX Competition. Brooke believes that "Technology and Engineering Education is important because the skills that are learned within the classroom benefit all students, no matter who they are or what their goals may be".

We look forward to celebrating Brooke and other 2020 award recipients at an awards banquet in the fall.

Does anyone using EBD FOT survey their students for the lessons in Unit 4? I want to give my students options of how to run them through it, basically and how to group them. Anyone else out there do something similar? Or, same thing using Advanced Design Applications, where each unit is a different type of technology?

Hello Everyone! First, thank you again for all the great emails and nice comments we've been receiving. We definitely appreciate it! :) I thought it might be helpful to make a general post to the group to address some of the questions we've been receiving multiple times regarding our STEM lesson content. 1. How does your site work? MyOwnCurriculum.com was built so that educators of all types can choose individual lessons, whole courses, or even access to our entire digital library of lessons. All lessons can be read/used online or downloaded for later use when the student might not have internet access. You simply choose the lessons or courses you would like access to and we send you your access code. It's that easy! :) 2. What standards are the lessons aligned to? When we built MyOwnCurriculum.com, we wanted to provide a platform for educators to locate and choose lessons quickly and easily. As you know, standards can be VERY vague and are changing daily via the legislatures. We built the site so that educators can choose lessons based on very clear learning objectives, and not on any particular set of standards, so they know exactly what is taught in a lesson before they choose it. 3. Do I have to have any type of special device like a Kindle? No! All lessons can be used by or downloaded to any computer or device with internet access. 4. How long do I get access to my chosen content? At MyOwnCurriculum.com, we think it is extremely important for students to be able to revisit lesson content even after they've mastered a learning objective. Consequently, all lesson content is available for a full calendar year once it is added to your access code. 5. Can I use the lesson content in conjunction with my current curriculum provider? Yes! We built the site so that educators can use the lesson content as the primary learning vehicle or to supplement other lesson content. If a student needs additional support on a particular learning objective, MyOwnCurriculum.com is a great way to choose and provide that lesson content! 6. Can I add content as I go? Yes! Users are free to choose and add lesson content and courses as they need them. Any additional curriculum content is simply added to your same access code. That's definitely enough for one post! :) THANK YOU again everyone for the very nice notes and emails we've been receiving! We're very happy and proud to be a provider of great STEM lesson content! :) If you haven't already, come say hello at [email protected]! We love hearing from you! :)
