Your Vote Your Voice Voting Summit

On September 14-18, 2020 a coalition of northern Virginia historically black Greek letter organizations will present a non-partisan Your Voice, Your Vote Virtual Summit. The purpose of the virtual summit is to educate disadvantaged and minority citizens of the DMV (with focus on Virginia) on topics such as voter rights, absentee voting laws and the importance of expressing & amplifying your voice through the vote. Our vision is to have record numbers of people in our community exercising their hard-earned right to vote with a new passion for local, state and federal political matters. It is quite simple: we must get out of our homes and get to the polls! The right to vote is too sacred and precious to ignore.

We have built a solid partnership around the need to reach communities that would ordinarily be overlooked in voter awareness efforts. We encourage these communities to engage their civic responsibilities to vote and become more politically astute citizens. Our virtual summit will be hosted via Zoom and is a bipartisan effort to bring attention to the importance of exercising our right to vote. Voting is where the power is. Voting can bring about change. Voting is the most powerful non-violent tool we can use in a democratic society. We all, including our younger generations, have a duty to use it. These realities form the basis for the Your Voice, Your Vote Virtual Summit.
A week full of free engaging events has been planned, filled with dynamic speakers:
• Monday, Sept 14th - Social media campaign encouraging voter registration, and more…
• Tuesday, Sept 15th - “Your Vote, Your Voice” panel of influencers, leaders, and activists from the DMV area, and more…
• Wednesday, Sept 16th - “The More You Know, The More You Grow” panel discussion, and more…
• Thursday, September 17th - Get Out The Vote Virtual Mixer featuring DJ-A-Ron reminding the public of voter registration deadlines and encouraging early voting

Join our virtual events for giveaways to help those impacted by the recent pandemic.

Visit the “Your Vote, Your Voice Virtual Voting Summit” page https://www.facebook.com/yvyvsummit/ for additional information such as how to join the live Zoom events.

Facial Masks for Minority Communities organized by Marianne Burke

The Omicron Kappa Kappa (OKK) Foundation is partnering with the Northern Virginia Equity Agenda Coalition (NOVA EAC) and First Baptist Church of Vienna to purchase 20,000 masks from an unaffiliated third-party vendor to distribute to minority and lower-income families to reduce the spread of the COVID-19 virus. The OKK Foundation is a northern Virginia-based 501 (C) (3), and the charitable arm of the OKK Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. The organization has been providing scholarships and mentoring young people since 2002. The NOVA EAC is composed of twenty Northern Virginia-based organizations that collaborate to promote non-partisan solutions to improve racial and gender equity. Once purchased, the masks will be distributed to a vast network of Northern Virginia charitable community organizations to include, Koinonia Foundation, United Community, Groveton Baptist Church, Western Fairfax Christian Ministries, Cornerstones Assistance Services and Pantry Program, Gum Springs Community Center, Creekside Village Apartments, First Baptist Church of Vienna, and others in multiple counties.

Across the country, African Americans and other groups that are disproportionately poor and working-class, are dying at significantly higher rates than whiter and wealthier communities. Those patterns are holding true in our region, as African Americans account for almost 80% of the confirmed COVID-19 deaths in Washington D.C., despite making up just under 50% of the population. Part of the reason is that telecommuting simply is not an option for many lower-income residents compelled to work in industries deemed essential, and they are therefore forced to continue working and commuting in environments that do not allow for social distancing. As demand for masks rises, so does the cost, which ultimately makes it more difficult for members of these vulnerable communities to acquire them. This effort will not only fill that need for those families but will potentially save the lives of countless others. You can help stop the spread of COVID–19 in these communities by contributing to this effort. No donation is too small.

***Special offer: For every personal donation of $100 or more you are welcome to a patriotic cloth mask (with a pocket for a filter) in your pick of fabric while supplies last: red white and blue with stars, red with stars, or blue with stars. You can receive your mask in time for Memorial Day and the 4th of July holidays. After donating send your mailing address to [email protected] with your choice of fabric – stripes with stars, red with stars, or blue with stars.

The NOVA Equity Agenda Coalition members are: Anonymous List For Change; Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc Lambda Kappa Omega Chapter; Boys to Men; Casa BruMar Foundation; Equality Loudoun; First Baptist Church of Vienna; Fairfax County Federation of Teachers; Indivisible Virginia 11; Interfaith Action for Human Rights; Ladies in Focus; NOVA National Pan Hellenic Council; Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., Omicron Kappa Kappa Chapter; Prince William NAACP; Progress for All; Rise For Youth; Service Employees International Union (SEIU); Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Iota Epsilon Sigma Chapter; South County Task Force; The Activated People; VA Justice Dems; Virginia Coalition Against Solitary Confinement.

Greetings friends and supporters of OKK,

We hope that you and yours are safe and sound during this COVID-19 'lockdown' period. It's important we all stay informed with real news and information. FEMA (where I work) is the source of the following Coronavirus (COVID-19) Pandemic Response for Wednesday, March 26, 2020.

> The federal government continues taking aggressive and proactive steps to address the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The health and safety of the American people is our top priority.

> We are halfway through 15 Days to Slow the Spread. Do your part to flatten the curve: Stay home as much as much as possible. If you need to go out, practice social distancing.

> Under the direction of the White House Coronavirus Task Force, FEMA, HHS and our federal partners are working with state, local, tribal and territorial governments to execute a whole of government response to fight the COVID-19 pandemic and protect the public.

> Sixteen states and 4 tribes have issued full stay-at-home orders; in addition
> Eight states have issued partial or localized orders.
> One state has issued orders for certain at-risk groups only.

> On March 22, President Trump directed the Secretary of Defense to allow the states of California, New York and Washington use of the National Guard in a Title 32 status to support state and local emergency assistance efforts.
> This allows the governors to activate the National Guard to support their disaster response efforts, on a fully reimbursable basis and under their respective command and control, if that becomes necessary.
> Additional states can request this assistance and those requests will be considered.

> On March 13, 2020, President Trump declared a nationwide emergency pursuant to Sec. 501(b) of Stafford Act. The President’s action cuts red tape and bureaucracy and avoids governors needing to request individual emergency declarations.

> In addition, the states of California, Florida, Iowa, Louisiana, New York, North Carolina, Texas and Washington were approved for major disaster declarations to assist with additional needs identified in these states.
> Medical supplies are en route to these states, including respirators, surgical masks and gowns, face shields, coveralls and gloves.
> Many supplies have already arrived and additional supplies are en route to these designated areas.

> The U.S. Navy hospital ship Mercy is en route and expected to be operational by April 1 to support Los Angeles with additional hospital beds and medical staff.

> The U.S. Navy hospital ship Comfort is expected to be operational by April 4 to support New York City.

> FEMA issued a $350 million Mission Assignment to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for construction of alternate care facilities in New York. Four sites have been selected.
