This is the official page for the National Tri-M Music Honor Society
Tri-M is the international music honor society for middle/junior high and high school students. It is designed to recognize students for their academic and musical achievements, reward them for their accomplishments and service activities, and to inspire other students to excel at music and leadership. Through more than 6800 chartered chapters, Tri-M has helped thousands of young people provide years of service through music in schools throughout the world. Founded in 1936 as the Maine Music Masters at Maine Township High School in Park Ridge, Illinois, the organization became the Modern Music Masters in 1952. Alexander and Frances Harley, our society's founders, gave the program to MENC in 1983. The name was changed to the Tri-M Music Honor Society and is now a program of NAfME: The National Association for Music Education.
Mission: To recognize students for their academic and musical achievements, reward them for their accomplishments and service activities, and to inspire other students to excel at music and leadership.
We celebrate our Tri-M Seniors, the Class of 2020!
We commend your dedication to music and service, and thank you for being a critical part of your school music program and community. Best wishes for your future as you continue to learn and grow!
We understand this is a difficult time with many graduation ceremonies being canceled. Your seniors have earned the privilege to wear their Tri-M Music Honor Society regalia with pride! Send us your group photos with their stoles, tassels, cords, or medallions.
Need regalia? The Tri-M Store is still open. Advisors and Parents can order their student’s materials online and have it shipped directly to their home: musichonors.com/shop-online/
Host a Virtual Induction Ceremony!
With schools closed and our social responsibility to not congregate in large crowds, there is still an option to host your spring induction ceremony virtually! Some tips for a successful ceremony:
• Test out the platform of your choosing ahead of time so you are familiar with the controls.
• Email the script (sample available on Tri-M website) ahead of time for your ceremony and practice with those who have a speaking part.
• Mail pins and certificates to your members for a fun “pass” from screen to screen.
• Record the ceremony to share with family and friends who could not attend.
Advisors AND Parents may order Tri-M graduation regalia and other merchandise. Call 800-336-3768 to place an order over the phone with Member Services or visit the Tri-M Store and place an order online!
While Tri-M National Headquarters made the difficult decision to cancel the 2019-2020 Chapter of the Year Scholarship Award, we would still like to recognize your chapter's completed service projects.
Fill out the Chapter Summary Report and email it to [email protected] along with any photos you may have taken for us to share on our Tri-M social media! Your Chapter Summary Reports also help us learn about new service project ideas for other chapters!
Do you have an aspiring young composer in your chapter? Encourage them to enter one of NAfME’s Composers Competitions! Entry categories are: Electronic Music Composition, Student Composers, and new this year- Student Songwriters.

Since many chapters are unable to collaborate on your Tri-M service projects, we have made the difficult decision to cancel the 2019-2020 Tri-M Chapter of the Year Scholarship and the 2020 Recognition of Excellence Awards.

Is there a protocol or suggested idea as far as middle school students that were a member of the Tri-M in 8th grade. Are they automatically part of the high school Tri-M as 9th graders, when they come to the high school? Trying to figure out how that is handled. Any suggestions would be great!
