The American Academy of Audiology The Academy is the world's largest organization of, by, and for audiologists.

The American Academy of Audiology was founded in January of 1988 when a group of audiology leaders met at the invitation of Dr. James Jerger at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. The purpose of the study group was to establish an independent, freestanding national organization run by and for audiologists. The new organization would be uniquely sensitive to the professional issues and the professional concerns affecting all audiologists. A Charter Advisory Committee was formed to elect officers, adopt bylaws, establish membership requirements and set up a national office. Jerger was elected the first President. The Charter of Incorporation for the Academy was filed in Nashville, Tennessee, in June 1988. The first national convention of the Academy was held in Kiawah Island, South Carolina in April 1989 with some 600 attendees. As an indication of the phenomenal growth of the Academy, the 13th Annual Convention was held in San Diego during April 2001 with more than 7,300 attendees. The Academy asks our followers to not post any negative, offensive, denigrating, and/or completely out of context content, pictures, or videos. All posts by followers can be removed based upon the discretion of Academy Board of Directors and staff. When tagging any Academy-related social media platform, avoid using statements, photos, video, or audio that could be viewed as malicious, obscene, threatening, intimidating, or that might constitute harassment or bullying. Examples of this type of conduct include offensive posts meant to intentionally harm someone’s reputation, contribute to the degradation based on race, color, religion, sex/gender (including pregnancy), gender identity and expression, national origin, disability, marital status, age, sexual orientation, citizenship status, Veteran status, or any other classification protected by applicable law, rules, or regulations.

Mission: The American Academy of Audiology promotes quality hearing and balance care by advancing the profession of audiology through leadership, advocacy, education, public awareness, and support of research.

Nearly 15% of Americans—more than 50 million people—experience some form of tinnitus. As an auditory phenomenon, tinnitus has quite the range. It could sound like crickets chirping, cicadas buzzing, high-pitched squeals, low-pitched hums, or even multiple pitches simultaneously. Former Academy President Jackie Clark, PhD and current Academy President Catherine Palmer, PhD provide expert insight on tinnitus.

Certain noises, excess ear wax, or your meds could be to blame.
