8:00-8:30PM Go Outside & HOWL

So..I heard some of you howling last night from all directions of our community. Let's do this again tonight & every night as a fun effort to join each other in isolation.

Howl like the wolf inside you is trying to escape!

"How about an 8:00 pm howl?"
We could come out front of our houses and howl. Other neighborhoods are doing it also so let's set how loud we can be.

Let us know if you have creative ideas to get us all through this difficult time.

Hi Whisperwood -
This furniture was improperly placed curbside. If it originated from your home, please make proper arrangements do have it removed and discarded. If you know who it belong(s)ed to please feel free to contact the board so we may contact the proper resident.

Rule of thumb - if it's too big to fit into your trash can or a trash bag it is NOT suitable to be placed curbside for regular trash collection!!

Thank you!

Fairfax County accidentally hit Whisperwood’s sewar line today while working on stream project, therefore all of our water and waste is currently pouring into the stream that feeds into Lake Audobon.

Fairfax County has requested that we, as much as possible, curtail all water related usage such as dishwashers, washing machines, showers and baths until a minimum of 9pm this evening while they work to resolve.

Please pass the word to your neighbors and thank you for your cooperation!

Practice Safety While Walking the Pathways

The National Recreation and Park Association recommends the following for keeping safe social distancing when in parks or on trails during the current coronavirus pandemic.

Follow CDC’s guidance on personal hygiene prior to heading to trails

***wash hands, carry hand sanitizer, do not use trails if you have symptoms, cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, etc.

***Observe at all times CDC’s minimum recommended social distancing of six feet from other people. Practice it and know what it looks like. Keep it as you walk, bike or hike.

***Warn other trail users of your presence and as you pass to allow proper distance and step off trails to allow others to pass, keeping minimum recommended distances at all times.

***Signal your presence with your voice, bell or horn.

***Note that trail and park users may find public restrooms closed — be prepared before you leave and time outings so that you are not dependent on public restrooms.

***Bring water or drinks — public drinking fountains may be disabled and should not be used, even if operable.

***Bring a suitable trash bag. Leave no trash, take everything out to protect park workers

I love knowing my glass is truly being recycled. Don't mind the extra trip to a purple bin at all!

I love knowing my glass is truly being recycled. Don't mind the extra trip to a purple bin at all!

Glass recycling (in purple bins) has been a smashing success so far:
💜 4 million pounds collected
💜 Glass-to-glass recycling now happening
💜 New market not possible without your voluntary support
💜 98% of glass is clean/usable

North America’s largest glass recycler has begun transporting glass from our processing plant in Lorton to one of its recycling facilities. There, the glass will be processed and sold to manufacturers of a wide range of glass products, including one that produces 3.6 million bottles a day at its bottle manufacturing plants in Danville and Toano, Va.

Hello Whisperwood -
As we probably all suspected, mother nature is not cooperating with our concrete project start date of 18 Dec.

We are currently in a holding pattern, should we have a period of 5-7 days of expected weather above 45 degrees, we will be able to move forward.

This may not occur in Dec, it may be early in 2020 but will take place when mother nature allows.

We will do our best to let you know as far in advance as possible when the next attempt will be.

Thank you!
Your Board of Directors

Hello Whisperwood -
You may have noticed some pinkish red arrows on MANY sections of the sidewalks throughout our community, this arrows mark concrete that will be replaced during our upcoming concrete project.

Edge Concrete, the contractor for this project in in process of placing the attached notices on the doors of the homes in our neighborhood. The notice mentions driveways and aprons, which clearly we do not have and all the work is being done on sidewalks so you don't need to worry about moving your car to another location for 3 days.

That said, any section of concrete that is replaced cannot be walked on. Please do not remove/relocate any of the cones placed by Edge Concrete. PLEASE do NOT use ANY salt or de-icing material on the fresh concrete and up to 2 years following.

Please take note of the sidewalks near your home, near where you park, if there are pink/red arrows on any section be sure, come 18 Dec, you are parked a minimum of 50 feet away from any marked concrete. Vehicles within 50 feet of work areas will be towed.

Obviously, mother nature can be a bit temperamental this time of year, if this project is delayed we will do our best to keep you informed.

Thank you,
Your Board of Directors

Recycle Your Glass at the Purple Can
Now Open in Reston
As part of Fairfax County’s recycling efforts, the new purple dumpster strictly for glass recycling is now open at the Reston South Park and Ride lot. All colors of emptied glass bottles and jars are acceptable. Food residue from jars should be rinsed out before placing glass in bins. Items that are not accepted include food, plastic bags, lamps or light bulbs, ceramics, porcelain, mirrors, windows, and glass sheets. The collected glass will be brought to the County’s “Big Blue” processing plant where it will be recycled for use in a variety of projects. Your glass recycles are still accepted for collection in curbside recycle bins.

Why take these extra recycling steps? Glass collected in curbside recycling bins is sent to recycling facilities where it eventually ends up in landfills. During the transportation process to the recycling facility, glass is broken and becomes mixed with recycling residue as part of the sorting process, making it unrecoverable. The glass-only drop-off containers allow the collected glass to be repurposed for other uses.

Reston South Park and Ride is located on Reston Parkway, just north of the intersection with Lawyers Road. The purple bin is in the southeast corner of the lot. Nearby: a purple dumpster is also available at the Providence Community Center, 3001 Vaden Drive, Fairfax.

County fed up with trash pickup problems

The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, frustrated with repeated or late trash pickups by American Disposal Services, said last week it will look into taking legal action against the company if the situation doesn’t improve soon.

Braddock District Supervisor John Cook (R) and Sully District Supervisor Kathy Smith (D) co-sponsored a May 7 board matter on the trash problem, which by all accounts has worsened in the last few weeks. Cook called the chronic missed pickups “a significant health, safety, and community enjoyment problem” for the county.

“Trash is left on street corners, or in overflowing HOA dumpster,” Cook said in the board matter, which can be read in full here. “This open trash attracts rats and other vermin, it smells, and is ugly. The people of Fairfax County deserve better.”

About 90 percent of residents — including the majority of those in Lee District — are serviced by private trash pickup. The rest, including much of Mount Vernon District, have their waste picked up by the county.

American, the primary company contracted for the private pickups, has blamed the recent service issues on a staffing shortage, Cook said. The county’s Department of Public Works and Environmental Services has been working with American to mitigate the problem, and Cook said county staff has gone “above and beyond the call of duty to help American.”

Cook said the county will continue to work with American on the issue, but on May 21 the Board of Supervisors will have a closed door meeting to discuss where the problems stands. If American is still failing to make pickups, Cook said the county will take legal action against the company.

“[The May 21 briefing] should include an analysis of all applicable consumer protection statutes, potential claims of fraud, or other legal issues potentially arising out of American’s failure to meet its commitments to our residents, and any options for the county to seek legal remedies,” Cook said. [T]his is American’s problem, and we expect the company to solve it in the next two weeks, or else the County will be prepared to take whatever legal action may be available. “

Residents, meanwhile, have taken to Nextdoor.com and Facebook to vent their frustrations, and many have indicated they have switched or are planning to switch to new companies for their pickups. Lee District Supervisor Jeff McKay said he’s been hearing this from residents as well, but noted that the switching of companies has led to other consequences.

“So in some neighborhoods now they have different vendors coming in on the same street every day of the week tearing up the roads,” McKay said, noting a single street could have 5-6 different companies picking up trash or recycling. “This is one of the real bad environmental and infrastructure components [of this problem].”

Fairfax County residents who rely on American Disposal for their trash and recycling pickup have dealt with increased service issues lately.

Good evening Whisperwood,
