The National Honor Society (NHS) and National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) are the nation's premier organizations established to recognize outstanding high school and middle level students. More than just an honor roll, NHS and NJHS serve to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character (and Citizenship for NJHS). These characteristics have been associated with membership in the organization since their beginnings in 1921 and 1929. Today, it is estimated that more than one million students participate in activities of the NHS and NJHS. NHS and NJHS chapters are found in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, many U.S. Territories, and Canada. Chapter membership not only recognizes students for their accomplishments, but challenges them to develop further through active involvement in school activities and community service. History of the Organization In 1921, NASSP officially established the National Honor Society. Though many local and regional honor societies existed prior to 1921, no nationwide organization had been founded. Under the leadership of Dr. Edward Rynearson, principal of the Fifth Avenue High School, Pittsburgh, Pa., the organization grew from the original Alpha Chapter at the Fifth Avenue School to more than 1,000 chapters by 1930. Equipped with a constitution, an emblem and motto, and a group of dedicated principals as coordinators, the new NHS organization quickly developed into one of the country's leading educational groups. Four main purposes have guided chapters of NHS from the beginning: "To create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership, and to develop character in the students of secondary schools." (from the NHS Constitution) These purposes also translate into the criteria used for membership selection in each local chapter. In 1929, the NASSP turned its attention to middle level schools and expanded the scope of its concern for recognizing outstanding students by establishing the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS). With its own constitution and handbook, NJHS has established criteria that parallel the emphases found in the NHS with an added purpose to encourage citizenship. (Additional information on establishing a chapter of the NJHS is available upon request from the NASSP Department of Student Activities.) Both the NHS and NJHS are sponsored and supervised by NASSP which appoints a National Council - the controlling body of NHS. In addition, National Council members also serve as the selection committee for the prestigious NHS Scholarship which has been administered annually in schools with NHS chapters since 1946. The day-to-day administration of NHS national concerns is handled by the NASSP Department of Student Activities, headquartered in Reston, VA.

Mission: Section 2. The purpose of this organization shall be to create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership, and to develop character in the students of secondary schools.

Students from across the United States have stepped up and demonstrated their #leadership skills during this time. We applaud you for your hard work and wanted to shine a light on your achievements. ⠀

Stephany and Bethany sewed over 70 masks and donated them to their local grocery store so both customers and employees could feel protected while working and shopping.⠀

Photo 2: Lane S. from Frontier⠀
Lane went above and beyond helping his community, especially during this time. He has put in 36 hours a week at the county home as a nurse's aid taking care of the people that live there. ⠀

Marin serves as vice president of her chapter and has thrived as a leader. Marin developed and implemented a virtual tutoring system that allows our members to offer video tutoring to students who need a little extra help while learning at home.

NEW MEMBERSHIP QUESTION: Can leadership experience which occured the summer before a student's freshman year be considered as part of the application process?
Our NJHS members woke up very early to volunteer and participate in the Autism Speaks Walk. It was a great day to help cheer everyone on to walk for such a good cause.
I have a chapter question: My question is regarding students who did not get a full vote from the faculty council and therefore not selected into our chapter. Do they have a right to appeal the decision of the faculty council to the principal?
I am a brand new NHS sponsor, our last sponsor retired. Can you tell the best place to get started. Where are the best resources, is there a list of things I should be doing month to month? Thank you for any help or advice you can provide.
Are there any alumnus that are from San Antonio following this page?

SHAME ON YOU NHS! Are you American Proud? Teen who claims Trump support cost him entry into National Honor Society gets invite to White House
Hi there I am one of the two NHS advisors on campus. I was just wondering about any fun or unique activities that other NHS societies do to bring cohesiveness and camaraderie to their chapters? Write now we have a meeting a month and volunteer opportunities that kids sign up for but there is not a sense of joint purpose or community. I would like to help build this in the coming year. Thanks in advance for your help!
Today my daughter Alyssa Compton was elected president of her chapter of the NJHS! I am beyond proud of her. She is a great student, shows respect and morals she has been taught and some on her very own. She works extremely hard helping others. And not just to get her service hours. She had been doing this before ever being inducted. All around wonderful young lady. Thank you to the NJHS for giving her a place to remind others and reward her for working so hard. Even without out it she would continue to show support and dedication where ever needed!
Would someone explain to me why if one of the requirements for admission is to write an essay, that a person let alone 24 (out of 58) of them were accepted without having to write one. It does not seem fair to the 34 people who actually followed procedure.
