Educating the 21st Century Civil Engineer

As the world evolves, civil engineering needs to evolve with it. That evolution must begin with education. In this episode of ASCE Interchange, Kevin Hall, professor of infrastructure engineering at the University of Arkansas and the chair of ASCE’s 2019 Civil Engineering Education Summit Program Committee, discusses the future of civil engineering education. https://bit.ly/32XZ1IB

Infrastructure played a role in his most tragic moments, but now it's become a key component of his greatest triumphs. Against all odds, Tresor Moolo left his home in the Democratic Republic of Congo to become a civil engineer. Now, he is able to return as the engineer his community needed while he was growing up: https://bit.ly/3bn9rUy.

When the world slowed to a near halt this spring, civil engineering did not. With empty highways, airports and offices, critical infrastructure projects around the United States were completed ahead of schedule. ASCE's Civil Engineering magazine spotlights a few of the projects that demonstrate our profession’s commitment to promoting public welfare even under the most challenging conditions: https://bit.ly/3bo0j1K.

When the governor of Rhode Island called ASCE member Steven King and asked him to lead an effort to secure PPE for the state’s essential workers, he answered the call – figuratively and literally.

25 million gloves, 4 million N95 respirator masks, 20 million surgical masks and over 700,000 face shields later, King views this staggering act of public service is all in a day’s work for a civil engineer. https://bit.ly/3gzvCI0

“In hard times like this … engineers must share not only their skill and knowledge but also provide support and relief to the people who were devastated.”

ASCE members in Lebanon helped lead the recovery effort in the aftermath of the explosion in Beirut, volunteering to assess structural damage, clear debris and assist residents. We are grateful, as always, for the support and guidance of civil engineers in trying times.

On this day in 1789, the first Congress of the United States authorized construction of the Old Cape Henry Lighthouse in Virginia Beach, Virginia, making it the 1st federally funded public works project in the new country. The lighthouse is the 4th oldest in the country and was designated as an ASCE National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark in 2002.

A fitting landmark to celebrate today on National Lighthouse Day!

Healthy ecosystems are nature’s barrier to hurricane damage

“Any upcoming investments that our country decides to make to stimulate the economy, given the current crisis, should really consider how investments in restoration, resilience and nature can create jobs and protect communities.”

A new report, published on June 5th by the National Wildlife Federation, documents the oft-overlooked capacity of natural ecosystems to protect communities from hurricanes and other natural disasters. The report, “The Protective Value of Nature,” draws upon decades of research to make the case f...

This is a building revolution! ConstructionWithoutCrane is a new technology with colossal commercial potential! Having mastered, we will build twice (or more) faster ... Technology always builds the "first" floor when it builds a building (skyscraper), builds any building "on the ground" without a crane. Having a permanent work site, we robotize and automate work, we will build the floors of the building like cars on an assembly line Then we will win the construction of all skyscrapers More than 120of them are built in the world per year. The annual turnover of our company, very soon, will be over $ 120 billion Turnover will increase by an order of magnitude if new technology is “sold” all over the world I propose to master. igidali.ru PCT International Patent Application No. RU2019000713

Hello ASCE family, I hope this message finds everyone well. My name is Kevin Kunz and I wanted to take a moment and share with you an innovative permeable pavement that we've invented at AquiPor Technologies. Our mission is simple, to keep the raindrops where they fall. As we all know, cities across our country are being hit with more intense storms that are dropping more rain and at a faster rate. Our goal is to provide resilience at the curb line of our cities and help alleviate the overall volume of stormwater from entering our pipes and tanks. More info on our technology can be found here: https://www.startengine.com/aquipor The reason I am reaching out is because we are seeking individuals who are in the industry and asking them to share our campaign with people in their networks that may have interest in our technology. Our hope is to get the conversation started about our technology and concept organically. How else can this technology be implemented into existing infrastructure? Who else would you suggest we reach out to? If you have any thoughts or questions, please let me know. We are ambitious in solving some of these major water issues that communities are experiencing coast to coast, and be able to do so relatively quickly as these problems are being magnified. The 100 or even 500 year storm is now happening every season in some areas. We feel as though the time to act for stormwater is now, and your help in sharing our message would aid in the mission. Thanks for your time, and we hope you and everyone at the ASCE family is safe and well during these trying times. - Kevin Kunz
