Supercharge School Tennis Supercharge School Tennis was a collaboration of QuickStart Tennis of Central VA, Mid-Atlantic Tennis & Education Foundation and USTA/Mid-Atlantic

Supercharge School Tennis (SST) was a collaboration of QCV, Mid-Atlantic Tennis & Education Foundation (MATEF) and USTA/Mid-Atlantic Section (MAS). SST accelerated the introduction of tennis into PE classes in schools located in underserved areas in Virginia. With the launch of the Supercharge School Tennis, kids all over Virginia had the opportunity to learn the “sport for a lifetime.” SST Task Force was an ad hoc committee appointed by John Raker, President of USTA/Mid-Atlantic. Serving as SST Co-Chairs were Catalina Brockland, former USTA/MAS Community Tennis Manager and Lynda Harrill, Founder of QuickStart Tennis of Central Virginia.

Mission: To accelerate the introduction of tennis into PE classes in underserved counties in Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia and the District of Columbia.

Supercharge School Tennis is no longer active. The pilot worked beautifully and got 14,000 more underserved kids in 30 schools playing tennis in just one semester. Think of what could have been accomplished if it had been allowed to continue . . . 😥😥😥

Every time I think about what this could have been, it makes me sad. :-(

Supercharge School Tennis Makes Grant to Mountain Ridge Middle

Reston, Virginia (1/9/2015) – Mid-Atlantic Tennis & Education Foundation is pleased to report an equipment grant has been made to Mountain Ridge Middle School in Gerrardstown (Berkeley County), West Virginia as part of Supercharge School Tennis. Thanks to USTA Mid-Atlantic’s generosity more than 600 students at Mountain Ridge Middle will be able to learn tennis in school and start a lifetime of physical activity.

Mountain Ridge PE Teacher Amber Nickens grew up in Charles Town and attended West Virginia University where she earned degrees in PE and Athletic Coaching. After teaching one year in Morgantown during graduate school, she moved to Berkeley County where she taught at Musselman Middle for six years before the move to the new Mountain Ridge facility in 2014. She also coached tennis at Musselman High for four years and basketball at Musselman Middle for two. Amber says, “I’m very appreciative and excited about my students getting to learn the sport I’ve played since I was five. I looked forward to every summer. Now I’ll be able to teach tennis in the gym.”

Kyle Hoffman, Tennis Service Representative for USTA/Mid-Atlantic in West Virginia, says, "I am very happy for Mountain Ridge Middle School to be a part of our school tennis initiative. Amber was one of the first PE teachers to express interest in adding a youth tennis component to her classroom, and we are thrilled to make this a reality for her and Mountain Ridge. Tennis starts in the classroom by giving kids an opportunity to learn to love a lifetime sport. With the rich history of tennis in the eastern panhandle of West Virginia, it's just a matter of time until the next generation makes an impact on our tennis communities. It will be fun to watch."

Supercharge School Tennis Virginia Map -- We started in southwest Virginia in Buchanan and Tazewell counties in August. Next is Bland this month, then Dickenson, Wise and Lee counties. In SWVA Phase II, we'll take tennis to Russell, Scott, Smyth, Washington and Wythe counties. We'll wrap up SWVA with Carroll, Floyd and Grayson counties in Phase III.

We have a solid plan! We know tennis in PE classes engages kids and gets them moving, learning skills (motor, racquet and life), being successful and having lots of FUN! It's the combination of FUN and SUCCESS that keeps them playing! What a terrific way to help combat childhood obesity and physical inactivity and create happy, healthy and active kids. The bonus -- physical activity improves academic performance!!!

What's next? We're also working on a special project in the Petersburg/Hopewell area and have plans for the Shenandoah Valley corridor as soon as SWVA is substantially complete.

We're building community partnerships and finding funds to purchase equipment for schools. If you know anyone who would like to partner with us, please give us a shout out!

We keep score! In southwest Virginia, so far we have trained Buchanan and Tazewell counties and will train Bland County on November 24th. We've talked to Dickenson, Lee and Wise about training next semester or next summer. Equipment has been provided to the three elementary/middle schools in Buchanan and nine elementary and middle schools in Tazewell. We still have three schools to equip in Tazewell as soon as they get their USTA Schools Tennis curriculum guide.

Many thanks to the grantors and contributors who have made this possible. Let's get a racquet is every hand and put a smile on every face of kids in southwest Virginia!!!
