Washington West Film Festival

Washington West Film Festival Join us Oct 22–26, 2020 for the 10th annual Washington West Film Festival. Even if you can't make it, donate today! Your donation will help build this very special festival that gives back 100% of it's box office each year!
Anchored in the Washington, DC metropolitan area’s sophisticated technology and wine region, the Washington West Film Festival invites filmmakers, film lovers, industry professionals, and the media alike to experience a breathtaking autumn in and around one of the most influential places on earth. From historic Pennsylvania Avenue to the idyllic vineyards of Northern Virginia, Washington West is set to screen the very best films that filmmakers have to offer. “Story can change the world” is Washington West’s mantra. Selected films - with their diverse genres and themes - are the medium from which our audiences are invited to enter the world of story themselves. This is accomplished when 100% of Washington West’s box office net proceeds are given each year to projects committed to alleviating hunger, disease, displacement, or poor education around the world.

That’s our girl!

✨ Congratulations to the graduating class of 2020, especially to our dear Production Lead, Hannah Freakin’ Harmison. This gem of a human has played an integral role in ensuring the right things get played at the right times on the right screens! Calm, cool, and collected even in the most stressful of situations. We are SO lucky to have her as part of our team and are all SO proud of her for graduating from George Mason University. On top of all that, she was a recipient of the 2020 Film at Mason Excellence Award, because, of course.

Thank you Hannah for all your help all these years and a huge congratulations from us :) 👩🏼‍🎓

The Film at Mason Academic Excellence Award goes to 4-year students who have excelled in their academic work. Congratulations to Hannah Harmison!

Hannah Harmison is a graduating Film at Mason senior in the Screenwriting Concentration and the 2020 Film at Mason Academic Excellence Award winner. Although she's sad she won't get to see her classmates' beautiful work at an in-person film festival this semester, she's excited to see what artistic endeavors await everyone after graduation. As she puts it, "Thank you FAVS!"

King of Peking - Trailer

#FilmFriday suggestion today is King of Peking, #NowOnNetflix. We screened this gem in 2017 and it subsequently won two jury awards for "Best Feature Narrative" and "Best Feature Narrative Director" for Sam Voutas.

Our 2017 jurors had the following to say about this film:
"I really think this movie is special and I'm grateful to have had a chance to see it."
"...a masterpiece."
"Charming, funny and heartfelt, the movie features standout turns from its two leads."

Today is #GivingTuesdayNow and it has us a bit more reflective than usual. With that, we come with three special asks including one that costs nothing but has a large impact.

1) Give Local...If You Can
If you are in the fortunate position of being able to give, please do what you can to help those in immediate need...or support local business by making an extra order and overtip.

2) Help Us Change The World
For those that are able to give even more, please also consider making a tax-deductible contribution to the non-profit Washington West Film Festival. Washington West gives 100% of its net box office to charities (like we did in 2019 with charities like Kids In The Spotlight). You can donate by going here https://wwfilmfest.com/join-the-story/donate/

3) Most Importantly, Share Your Story
No matter who you are, YOU can make a difference. Your time, compliments, thoughts, prayers and most importantly your Story are what the world needs most. Big or small, you can do something to make a positive change to someone else's world today.

Thank You and Keep Changing the World.

PS It's a ways away but so long as we are able to provide a safe event we are planning our 10th anniversary now and hope to see you in October. In the meantime, please stay safe and healthy.

Westfalia filmmaker, Haley Finnegan, has a nice little message for all of us. #StoryCanChangeTheWorld

I still can’t believe it. A year ago my film premiered at Tribeca.
Tribeca Film Festival was started to bring life back to the neighborhood after 9/11. An unforgettable day. One of the scariest days I can remember. Tribeca knew the power of film and the fellowship a festival brings. They started it just one year later in 2002. Prompt.
The second scariest time in my life was the uncertainty of late February 2020. Will we be safe from this virus? And it’s still scary. And devastating. But Tribeca was prompt. Again. They immediately started calling alumni to organize their online festival.
I need good movies to get through this. To take me away from this socially distanced world. To take me back to a world of handshaking and hugs and kisses and simply rubbing elbows with strangers.
Tribeca found a way for us all to return to world of wonder. I continue to be a fan and I feel honored to be an alumni.
I still can’t believe last year.
I still can’t believe this year.

If you're newer to the Kids In The Spotlight family,
you may not know about our friends at the Washington West Film Festival.

They have been HUGE supporters of KITS & our shared belief in the power of storytelling. They also have been donating their box office sales to KITS for the past 4 years as well as giving some of our youth the opportunity to fly across the country to attend and share about KITS' impact.

So, right now, we have a chance to (in a very small way) return the favor!

USA Today has already distinguished the Washington West Film Festival as one of the top 20 film festivals in North America!

But for the TOP 10 BEST, they're letting voters weigh in!

The Oscars are upon us! For our weekly Friday film recommendation this week, we're gonna push for our 2019 film, Learning to Skateboard in a Warzone (if you're a girl) #NowOnHulu!

It may be a short film, but the girls in this documentary have perseverance, dedication, bravery, in HUGE quantities. After you watch the film, you'll want to brush the dust off of your old skateboard and take a ride.

Best of luck to Carol Dysinger and the rest of the film team at The Academy! We're cheering you on from west of Washington!
