This week's Mitzvah Monday post comes from our Green Team, NVHC's very own environmental group, just in time for Earth Day this Wednesday, April 22.

With everyone stuck at home, you’re probably looking for things to do. Below is a link to a series of short videos on things to do at home to save energy, from choosing energy efficient lightbulbs to to insulating your power outlets (it's easier than it sounds!) Do you have any tips on how to be more energy efficient and environmentally friendly? Share them with us!

As we near the end of Pesach, we’re looking for some innovative ways to use up all this matzah we have left. So this week’s Matzah Monday challenge is: Share your favorite matzah-based recipe with us! Matzah brei, matzah pizza, or maybe you’ve gotten the hang of making your own matzah. We’d love to hear about it and maybe even give it a try.

Also be sure to look through the pictures on this post for this week’s program schedule!

Our online interactions have been a lifeline during these times, and Shabbat services add an element of the holy to our screens and our lives.

Join us tonight at 7:00pm for Erev Shabbat services and then, for the first time ever, join us right afterwards for a virtual oneg! Bring your Shabbat candles, Pesach sweets, matzah, and a glass of wine and celebrate the joy of Shabbat with us.
Please note that while you can attend the service on Zoom (see the daily email), YouTube (http://ow.ly/qrGX50zbdJJ), or our Facebook Group (http://ow.ly/ipzF50zbdJK), the oneg will ONLY take place on Zoom.

Then be sure to join us again tomorrow for Shabbat Sustenance at 9:00am and Havdalah at 7:30pm! (links in the daily email)

Chag (Virtual) Pesach Sameach - NVHC

For this week's MATZAH Monday, we want to know what you're doing to prepare for Pesach! Tags us in a picture of your seder plate, share your grandma's best matzah ball soup recipe, or post a video of your favorite Pesach song. Who knows, maybe you'll inspire someone else to try out your tradition at their seder!

Need some more resources or information? Click here to check out our Pesach resources page, where you'll find advice on how to host a digital seder, creative projects and ideas for Pesach, and more: http://ow.ly/xsIK50z4Xkn

Be sure to scroll through the pictures on this post for this week's programming schedule. It's spring break and the week of Pesach, so it might look a little different, but don't worry, our new programs aren't going anywhere!

In order to help do our part to flatten the curve and follow the directives of Virginia and the CDC, our clergy will now lead Shabbat services from their homes. While we must adjust and innovate, familiar faces, ritual gathering, and the wisdom of tradition remain our source of strength. Reach out to those who might not be connecting with us. Invite your friends, neighbors, and family to join us online, so they can share in the spiritual strength of NVHC.

Here are the three ways you can join us for Shabbat going forward:
1. On Zoom - the link to the Zoom meeting can be found in your daily email; email us if you're not receiving the email, [email protected].
2. On YouTube - we will be live streaming the service as usual straight from Zoom to our YouTube channel: http://ow.ly/jqkn50z4SuU.
3. On Facebook - we will also live stream the service straight to our private Facebook Group: http://ow.ly/GfTI50z4SuV

Erev Shabbat service will be tonight at 7pm, and then we will gather for Shabbat Sustenance and Book Club tomorrow at 9am and Havdalah at 7:30pm on Zoom.

Shabbat is our time to come together, share our strength, and connect.

This week's Mitzvah Monday challenge encourages you to connect again, this time with a friend from NVHC! Maybe there's someone you took a class with once, or someone you always sit next to at services, or the parent of your child's friend in religious school.

Whoever it is, reach out to them and catch up a little. You can check out the NVHC directory on ShulCloud for contact information, OR we are very pleased to announce that we've started a Facebook group just for NVHC members called NVHC Community Corner!

While this page will still be your home for updates, the Facebook group is a private, members-only space where you can connect, share photos, share stories, and check in with each other. Click here to access it: http://ow.ly/4sFt50yZ4rb

Let us know how it goes in the comments!

On Shabbat, we are reminded that our covenant provides us with a network of support, strength, obligation, and joy that follows us everywhere. (paraphrased from Rabbi Holzman's Shabbat message today) Reach out to that network - to your family, to your neighbor, to NVHC, to God. We are all here for each other.
We wish you a peaceful and restful Shabbat. Shabbat shalom!

Tonight, we're live on YouTube streaming our Erev Shabbat service at 7:00pm (http://ow.ly/1W0i50yY46M)! Click here to view and download the prayer sheet we will use tonight in place of our siddurim: http://ow.ly/fKZl50yY46O.

Then tomorrow morning, we gather for Shabbat Sustenance at 9am, looking at the Book of Leviticus and studying how we pray. (http://ow.ly/BuQO50yY4oC) Then we connect for Hadvalah to close out this beautiful Shabbat at 7:30pm (http://ow.ly/bX4350yY46H).

Every Monday, NVHC is going to issue you a little challenge we're calling Mitzvah Monday to help keep you connected to the world around you and bring a little joy to our current situation.

This Mitzvah Monday, we are challenging you to FaceTime, Zoom, Skype, etc someone you've never video chatted with. Your grandmother, your uncle, your best friend - whoever it is! We want you to reach out to them, to check in on them, and see how they're doing.

Let us know how you did! Comment down below, or even share a screenshot - we'd love to see how you're making meaningful connections to the people who matter most in your life.

After a week of learning and adjusting and planning and do-ing, Shabbat is here to guide us back to be-ing - being in community, being with each other, being here for each other.

We come together tonight at 7pm for Erev Shabbat services livestreamed on YouTube (http://ow.ly/4Sq550yRu3E). Click here to view and download the prayer sheet we will use tonight in place of our siddurim: http://ow.ly/x0lT50yRu3H.

Then tomorrow morning, we gather for Shabbat Sustenance at 9am (bring your own bagel!) (http://ow.ly/9vcG50yRu3I), and then Hadvalah to close out this beautiful Shabbat at 7:30pm (http://ow.ly/WNvK50yRu3J).

We wish each and every one of you a peaceful, restful Shabbat. Shabbat Shalom!

As you've probably seen in your inbox (and if you haven't, click here to find all the latest updates about how we're responding to CoVID-19: http://ow.ly/O4WC50yLqj5), we have decided to cancel all in-person gatherings at NVHC.

Does that mean we're cancelling Shabbat?!?

No! We are very fortunate that we live in a time that allows us to gather together online! Our clergy will be leading us in a live streamed service tonight starting at 7pm. Click here to participate in the stream and be part of our online congregation: http://ow.ly/BkTk50yLqj2

We know that things are pretty scary right now, but we also know that we have a lot to be grateful for and a lot of good news to share too. Let us know in the comments what YOU'RE grateful for this week, and you might just hear us mention it tonight during the service!

Shabbat Sustenance will also be a modified online gathering, but this time over Zoom, so we can talk and nosh (bring your own bagel) together as always. At 9am, we'll have Shabbat Sustenance: Great Texts of America, where we'll be studying Rachel Carson's Silent Spring. The Zoom link can be found on our CoVID-19 update page.

We might be socially distancing ourselves, but that doesn't mean we have to be socially isolated. Shabbat has always been the center of Jewish community. We hope you'll join us tonight and tomorrow morning to celebrate Shabbat together. Shabbat Shalom!

What a weekend we have in store for you!
Tonight we have our Erev Shabbat service - it's the first of the month, so if you have a birthday or anniversary this month you just might get a special treat!

Then tomorrow morning at 9:00 am we're celebrating Shabbat with our Adult B'nai Mitzvah class as they become Bar/Bat Mitzvah! We are so inspired by the commitment they have all made to affirm their place in the Jewish community and we are excited to be with them on this special day.

And THEN tomorrow at 7 we kick off our Purim celebrations with Adult Purim Comedy Night! Join us for a night of food, drink, Megillah reading, and tons of laughter. Click here to learn more and register: http://ow.ly/IYES50yFeBO

Last but most certainly not least, Sunday morning at 9:30 we have the Malice in the Palace Purim Carnival and hamantashen baking competition! Hamantashen only cost $1 and all proceeds benefit the Forest Edge food packing program.

We can't wait to celebrate all these awesome events with you! Shabbat shalom!

Tonight we come together for Finally Friday, a family-mindful service followed by a delicious meal and oneg! Remember that Finally Friday services start at 6 PM!

Then tomorrow morning at 9 am, join us for Shabbat Sustenance, A Spiritual Approach to Super Tuesday: Don't Panic! As this election cycle heats up, we are reminded of our covenant with one another, to approach these discussions by asking questions, listening, and working together as Jewish community to overcome political polarization. We hope you can come learn with us!

Shabbat shalom!

02/21/2020

Tonight at 7, Kol Shirah (our adult choir) ramps up the ruach and adds their beautiful voices to our Erev Shabbat service, then tomorrow morning we welcome Rabbi Holzman back from Sabbatical as he leads Shabbat Sustenance Great Texts of America! (at 9am)

We are excited to learn with and from him again as we dive into Abraham Lincoln's Second Inaugural Address, studying it with the same methods and skills we use to study Torah.

We wish you a joyous Shabbat! Shabbat shalom!

Today is Tu B'shevat, our third Jewish new year of 5780 - it's the birthday of the trees!

Tu B'shevat is a festival of nature - a time to celebrate and be thankful for the natural world. It reminds us that we are deeply connected to the earth, the seasons, and every living thing that shares this planet with us, and that we have a sacred responsibility to care for it all.

Join us this Saturday for our annual Shabbaton, a day of Shabbat prayer, learning, and community that we're calling ‘Na’aseh V’nishma’ – ‘We will do, and we will listen’ (Book of Exodus).

That morning, we celebrate Torah - hearing its words chanted, learning about Torah chanting, learning about the origins of the text, interpreting the text, and sharing those interpretations. Our day will also include braiding challah, time for creative communal prayer and learning, and lunch together (during which we'll eat our challot!)

We hope you can join us for this beautiful, inspiring Shabbaton. Click here to register: https://nvhc.shulcloud.com/form/Shabbaton-2020

Between our teens' spa-and-karaoke-night themed shul in tonight, Parshat Bo (this week's Torah portion), and our Shabbat Sustenance Service of Healing and Wholeness tomorrow morning, this Shabbat seems to be asking us a pretty big question: How can you take care of yourself?

This Shabbat, we hope you find a few moments for a little self-care and self-advocacy. Whether that's going for a walk, taking a bath, or reading a good book in a quiet space, consider your feelings and needs - what do you need to feel whole, to feel supported, to heal anything that's not quite right?

And don't forget that whatever you have going on, you have our entire community behind you. If you need a little reminder, please join us tonight at 6 pm for our Finally Friday Shabbat service. We'll welcome Shabbat with prayer and song, then enjoy a delicious Shabbat dinner and oneg together.
Then tomorrow morning at 9 am, we have our Shabbat Sustenance Service of Healing and Wholeness, for anyone who feels like they might need a little extra support and a little extra healing.

May you find peace and wholeness this Shabbat. Shabbat shalom!

Ah, it's Shabbat again! This Shabbat, there will be no services at NVHC because it's our Sha-Pot Luck Shabbat! Whether you'll be sharing dinner with us at NVHC or at home with your friends and family, we hope you experience the joy and peace that comes from welcoming Shabbat with those you love.

Tomorrow morning at 9am, we gather together for Torah Reading Shabbat Sustenance! We'll read some Torah, invite you to read some too, then study the parsha together. It will be a beautiful morning of learning and we hope you can join in!

"Teach Your Children" as V'ahavta? Adon Olam to the tune of "Country Roads"? Tonight at 7pm we combine our Jewish neshama (soul) and voice with our American folk music heritage to bring you Folk Song Shabbat! Join us to welcome Shabbat with this unique, fun, and inspiring worship experience.
Then don't forget to continue this Shabbat journey with us tomorrow morning at 9am with Shabbat Sustenance!

Shabbat shalom everyone!

01/10/2020

What a Shabbat we have this weekend! Join us tonight at 7 to sing with Kol Shirah and welcome the new members of the Board of Trustees! We are thankful for their leadership and can't wait to see how they'll guide NVHC in 2020.

Tomorrow morning at 9 we have Shabbat Sustenance: Great Texts of America, where we'll be studying W.E.B. Du Bois' The Souls of Black Folk. Using the same skills we use to study Torah, we'll do a deep dive into this cornerstone of African-American literature to look at what it was like to be African-American in turn of the century America, and what has changed (or not) since then.
