DC Council Candidates Brooke Pinto and Janeese Lewis George Secure Endorsements from
LiUNA in Advance of November 3rd General Election
Washington, DC – The Baltimore-Washington Laborers’ District Council, LiUNA announced its endorsement today of Brooke Pinto for DC Ward 2 Councilmember and Janeese Lewis George for Ward 4 Councilmember.
Ms. Pinto and Ms. Lewis George each won their Democratic primary elections, demonstrating that the residents of the District of Columbia are hungry for progressive change on the DC Council. Ms. Pinto also won the Ward 2 Special Election, and was sworn into office on June 27th.
“We are excited to support Brooke Pinto and Janeese Lewis George in the general election,” said Julio Palomo, Business Manager for the Baltimore-Washington Laborers’ District Council. “Councilmember Pinto and Ms. Lewis George represent the future of the District of Columbia. Both understand that expanding unionization is one of the greatest tools available to address income inequality, and we are confident they will push for policies and laws that help working people.”
Councilmember Pinto is the youngest councilmember ever elected in the District of Columbia. She previously served in the Office of the Attorney General as a tax attorney and then as Assistant Attorney General for Policy and Legislative Affairs. Janeese Lewis George is a native Washingtonian and life-long Ward 4 resident. She also previously served in the Office of the Attorney General where she was an Assistant Attorney General in the Juvenile Section of the Public Safety Division.
“As we continue to deal daily with the Covid-19 pandemic, the District of Columbia needs dedicated and thoughtful elected officials like Councilmember Pinto and Ms. Lewis George who are not afraid to challenge the status quo,” said Palomo.
The BWLDC is committed to identifying, endorsing, and supporting candidates for elected office whose values and priorities are consistent with those of its members. Today’s endorsement of Ward 2 Councilmember Brooke Pinto for re-election and Janeese Lewis George as Ward 4 Councilmember is part of that effort.

Barbara Kanninen Earns Baltimore/Washington Laborers’ District Council Endorsement for Arlington County Board Member

Arlington County, VA– Today, the Baltimore Washington Laborers’ District Council (BWLDC), an affiliate of the Laborers’ International Union of North America (LiUNA!) announced its endorsement of Dr. Barbara Kanninen for Arlington County Board Member. A special election will occur over the summer to fill the seat previously held by Eric Gutshall, who recently lost his battle with brain cancer. Arlington County Democrats will determine their candidate for the special election through a closed nomination process to be held on May 7th.

“Dr. Kanninen will be a great addition to the Arlington County Board,” said Julio Palomo on behalf of the BWLDC. “She is a strong advocate for organized labor, and recognizes the value that both prevailing wage and project labor agreements can bring to county construction projects.” New Virginia state laws, effective May 2021, will make it possible for local jurisdictions like Arlington County to enact prevailing wage and project labor agreement ordinances.

Dr. Kanninen is currently a member of the Arlington County School Board. She also has served on
the Virginia Governor’s Commission on STEM Education, as Chair of the Northeastern Region for the Virginia School Boards Association, and as School Board Liaison to Arlington's Census 2020 Complete Count Committee, Joint Facilities Advisory Committee, and Advisory Council on Instruction.

“LiUNA has had a strong and positive relationship with Dr. Kanninen for many years,” said Mr. Palomo. “We supported Dr. Kanninen when she first ran for the Arlington County School Board in 2014, and we remain in her corner.”

DC Ward 2 Council Candidate Patrick Kennedy Receives
Baltimore/Washington Laborers’ District Council Endorsement

Washington, DC – Today, the Baltimore Washington Laborers’ District Council (BWLDC), an affiliate of the Laborers’ International Union of North America (LiUNA!) announced its endorsement of Patrick Kennedy for Ward 2 Councilmember in advance of both the June 2nd Democratic primary and the Ward 2 June 16th special election. The Ward 2 council seat is currently vacant due to the resignation of Jack Evans.

“Patrick Kennedy impressed us with his energy and enthusiasm, comprehensive knowledge of Ward 2, as well as his understanding of the importance of increasing union membership to address income inequality in the District,” said David Allison, Business Manager for the BWLDC. “We need leaders like Patrick Kennedy on the council who are committed to expanding policies that support a unionized workforce, and will ensure organized labor has a seat at the table.”

Patrick Kennedy has a long track record of community involvement in Ward 2 and proven leadership skills. He has served as the ANC Commissioner for 2A01 since 2012, and also is currently the chair of 2A.

“The residents of Ward 2 have signaled that they are ready for a change in Ward 2’s leadership, and we believe that Patrick Kennedy is the right choice,” said Mr. Allison.

Baltimore/Washington Laborers’ District Council Endorses
Brandon Todd for Re-Election as DC’s Ward 4 Councilmember

Washington, DC – Today, the Baltimore Washington Laborers’ District Council (BWLDC), an affiliate of the Laborers’ International Union of North America (LiUNA!) announced its endorsement of Ward 4 Councilmember Brandon Todd for re-election in advance of the June 2nd Democratic primary.

“The BWLDC has had a strong, positive working relationship with Councilmember Todd since he was first elected to office in 2015,” said David Allison, Business Manager for the BWLDC. “Mr. Todd recognizes that project labor agreements (PLAs) not only help bring construction projects in on time and on budget, but also help further construction careers for District residents.”

With PLAs, the District can leverage the union-based apprenticeship system to create career pathways for District residents at no cost to workers or taxpayers. Because construction projects end when the work is completed, a robust PLA pipeline enables District-resident apprentices to build up the hours needed to become journeypersons earning family–supporting wages.

Councilmember Todd’s voting record demonstrates his solid support for PLAs. He voted in favor of the Procurement Integrity, Transparency, and Accountability Amendment Act of 2015, which established that city construction projects valued at $75 million or more must be built under a PLA unless the mayor indicates in writing why a PLA is not in the best interest of District residents. He also voted in favor of the East End Health Equity Act of 2018, which includes a PLA on the construction of the proposed new community hospital on the St. Elizabeths campus.

“When the rubber hits the road, we have been able count on Councilmember Todd, and we look forward to working with him over the next four years, “said Mr. Allison.

BWLDC Announces Endorsements for Prince George’s County Board of Education

Prince George’s County, MD—Today, the Baltimore Washington Laborers’ District Council (BWLDC), an affiliate of the Laborers' International Union of North America (LiUNA), announced its endorsement of five candidates for Prince George’s County Board of Education:

• Edward Burroughs III (incumbent and Board Vice Chair) for District 8 School Board Member
• David Murray (incumbent) for District 1 School Board Member
• Raaheela Ahmed (incumbent) for District 5 School Board Member
• Shayla Adams-Stafford for District 4 School Board Member
• Kenneth Harris II for District 7 School Board Member

Vice Chair Burroughs was the lead sponsor of a 2019 school board resolution to establish a pilot community workforce agreement for asbestos removal at eight county schools to create family-supporting jobs with benefits for county residents. Mr. Murray and Ms. Ahmed also played instrumental roles in the passage of the resolution.

“Edward Burroughs, David Murray, and Raaheela Ahmed have demonstrated their unwavering commitment to organized labor and LiUNA, and we are pleased to support them for reelection,” said BWLDC Business Manager David Allison.

Ms. Adams-Stafford is an instructional coach with expertise in Project Based Learning, a member of the National Faculty of the Buck Institute of Education, and a former High School Teacher of the Year. Mr. Harris is a graduate of Greenbelt’s Eleanor Roosevelt High School who earlier this year was named to the Forbes 2020 list of 30 Under 30 in Science for his work on the James Webb Space Telescope Mission—on which he was one of NASA’s youngest to integrate a satellite of that magnitude.

“Shayla Adams-Stafford and Kenneth Harris have the backgrounds and credentials we need on the Prince George’s County Board of Education,” said Allison.

The BWLDC is committed to identifying, endorsing, and supporting candidates for elected office whose values and priorities are consistent with those of its members. The five Prince George’s County Board of Education candidates endorsed today are part of that effort.
