International Day of the Girl Child - 11 October

Today is the first ever International Day of the Girl Child (http://www.un.org/en/events/girlchild/). This year's theme, ending child marriage, is directly related to our refugee camp library project. As you may know, in the Darfuri refugee camps in eastern Chad, formal education ends at primary school. Because girls do not have an opportunity to attend secondary school in the camps, they are at a greater risk for very early marriage. This is one of the reasons our library in Iridimi Refugee Camp will stock many secondary school books. We hope that the library can offer secondary school-age children an opportunity to continue learning, and provide a source of higher knowledge for their informal teachers. The library will include secondary level textbooks both from the official Sudanese curriculum and other curricula, secondary level fiction and non-fiction for free reading, and English and French languages courses aimed at this age group. Thanks to your support, girls in the camp might be able to focus on their education a little longer and avoid the dangers of early marriage.

International Day of the Girl Child recognizes girls’ rights and the unique challenges girls face around the world. This year’s event will focus on child marriage.

Refugee book requests UPDATED. See the "Survey of Reading Needs" section at the link below. Some of the topics newly requested: biographies of prominent women, peace and justice, poultry farming, basic commerce for small businesses in the refugee camp, folk tales, adventure, police novels. Also, more details about the breakdown by reading level. This is why we're called Book WISH -- we provide the books the readers wish for.

June 20, 2012 — World Refugee Day — Book Wish Foundation is thrilled to announce that Iridimi Refugee Camp in eastern Chad will be the location of the first library funded by our charity anthology What You Wish For. The library will have a capacity of up to 20,000 books, and will focus on providing...

Question from a donor: If I sponsored a brick in Book Wish's earlier library construction campaign, how is that money being used in connection with the Iridimi Refugee Camp library?

Answer: All funds previously donated for library construction are being used for stocking the Iridimi Refugee Camp library. Because the UN Refugee Agency advised that we would be able to have a greater impact sooner by focusing on Iridimi, where there is an existing suitable building, rather than a refugee camp where there isn't even a building, your donation will instead pay for books, bookshelves, and book shipping. We would love to be able to fund library construction in the nine camps where there isn't even a building, but that is beyond our current budget.

Any donors with questions about the library project should feel free to contact us. Please also see the details at http://bookwish.org/iridimi-refugee-camp-library.

If you liked Ann M. Martin's story, "The Lost Art of Letter Writing," from our anthology WHAT YOU WISH FOR, check out her new collection of stories released today, BECAUSE OF SHOE (it's about dogs!). Ann was one of the first authors to join WHAT YOU WISH FOR, and she's a great supporter of both literacy and animal welfare causes.

Check out Because of Shoe and other stories, in stores and libraries today! Here’s what my dog Sadie had to say in the forward: “Between the covers of this book, you’ll read about a boy who turns into a dog, a dog who brings a family together, a dog who lived a long time ago and was a companion to a very great artist in Paris, and about funny dogs, adventurous dogs, brave dogs, smart dogs, and dogs who perform rescues.” I couldn’t have said it better myself!
