The Light House Project

The Light House Project Working to drive out darkness with light in the aftermath of the Chapel Hill Shootings. We work to provide Triangle area Muslim youth with access to resources, a nurturing environment, and a voice in hopes of making them feel safe, valued, and empowered.
(48)

The Light House Project is made up of four ambitious and amazing initiatives. The first initiative is known as "The Light House". We are currently working on converting Deah Barakat's rental property in downtown Raleigh into office space, and a community resource center based on the findings of a needs assessment. The second initiative is furthering our inspiring speaking engagement programs. We love to engage the public through speaking engagements where personal stories about the lives of Deah Barakat, Yusor Abu-Salha, and Razan Abu-Salha are shared by family and friends. This approach allows us to relate to many on a personal level first, then allows us a chance to really communicate a positive change in their lives. This program will take an active role in reaching out to our community and answering questions about Islam and Muslims. The third initiative is media production. We are working to contribute to the American Muslim narrative through creative media production, sharing stories, and answering questions, destined to spread peace and tolerance. The last initiative is the Day of Light. The Light House Project aims to orchestrate a national movement celebrating American Muslims. Join our national day of service celebrating the accomplishments of American Muslims and an end to bigotry.

Thank you to everyone that participated in this years interfaith food drive. We receievd over $8,000 in online donations and over 7,000 pounds of food which translates to over 48,000 meals for our fellow North Carolinians in need! This brings the five-year total to 293,000 meals for the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina We also created 200 sandwich trays that were sent to Oak City Cares in downtown Raleigh to provide lunch for our homeless population. We were also able to register dozens of individuals for Team Liyna to be part of the national bone marrow donation registry. Thank you to all the people who worked behind the scenes, to the organizations and businesses that contributed, to the countless donors, and to the hundreds of volunteers that came out today. Also thank you to the Biscuit Haven that provided free meals to everyone that was out there! None of this could have been possible without all of you working together. Please make a prayer for Deah, Yusor, & Razan and their families and a prayer that we all continue to work side by side 🙏🏽 The Light House annual fundraiser is in one week. Please come out to see what else is going on in the community and how you can help the youth with their projects. https://facebook.com/events/s/annual-fundraiser-showing-up/851868295242520/?ti=icl

Many of you might recall the below qoute that is from Yusors interview with NPR before the tragedies. The person in the picture below the quote is Liyna Anwar. She is the journalist who helped produce the audio of Yusors interview and helped bring it into listeners homes.

Liyna is now in the hospital with acute myeloid leukemia, an aggressive form of the cancer. She is in need of a bone marrow transplant but her ethnic background is proving to be a challenge in finding a transplant donor match.

For Saturday’s food drive we have ordered 50 initial swab kits so that we can test people and sign them up for the bone marrow registry and see if we can find a match. Can you help us use all 50? Please see Team Liyna for more ways to help.

Wednesday at The Table:
February 19- Conflict in our Current Cultural Climate

Farris Barakat is the brother of Deah Barakat who, along with his wife and sister-in-law, were killed in what many viewed as an anti-Muslim hate crime in Chapel Hill in 2015. Since then, Farris founded the Light House, an incubator of faith based programs for youth, and devotes his time to speaking out against hate.

Farris Barakat will revisit the 2015 murders of his brother Deah Barakat and in laws Razan and Yusor Mohammad Abu-Salha. Farris will talk about the impact of this tragedy, and address the rhetoric that fuels anti-Muslim violence in the US. Farris describes himself as Deah's brother, founder of the Our Three Winners Foundation and The Light House Project, and a lifelong Raleigh resident.

Dinner is served from 5:15-6:00. Adult program, Children's programs, and Youth "Wednesday Night Live" activities begin at 6:30. Dinner menu: Baked beef and pasta

This month we are hosting the 6th annual interfaith food drive. Over the past 5 years this has become the largest third party food drives for the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina. It has created over 244,000 meals for those in need in NC and has brought together over 50 organizations and companies. For one month the community collects non perishable items and then at the end of the month they all meet together to load up a truck for delivery to the food bank. We are looking forward to another month of all coming together and working side by side. We are also looking forward to having new faces join us this year. Please click on the link below to join us and help us to reach new people by inviting your friends! Thank you!

Reflection on YouTube video "Our Muslim Youth Are Hurting"

Reflection on video "Our Muslim Youth Are Hurting" by the Yaqeen Institute for Islamic Research as it relates to our high school Spring Break camp this weekend. Intenalized Islamophobia, a weaker sense of community, and confusing identities are all why our camp is so important.

Only 3 more days until the food drive and we are overjoyed to share this great news with you! Baitulmaal USA has awarded us a grant that will have 15,000 pounds of sweet potatoes dropped off at the food drive for us to sort. Baitulmaal understands that too many children & parents around the world do not know where their next meal is coming from. They are tackling food insecurity with life-sustaining food programs internationally & food pantries here in the US. With this grant they are helping us reach more than ever before. Enjoyed covering #DeahDay - a tribute to the three muslim students who were shot and killed outside their #ChapelHill apartment three years ago.

UNC School of Dentistry cancels class and clinics on this day each year to give back to the community and to honor the memory of the late Deah Barakat, his wife Yusor Abu-Salha and her sister Razan Abu-Salha. Deah was a UNC dental student and Yusor was getting ready to enter the program.

More than 400 volunteers participated at more than 20 sites across the Triangle including The The Light House Project, a youth community center that carries out the mission of Our Three Winners of serving those less fortunate.

To God we belong, and to Him we return.

It saddens us tremendously to have to share that Hassan Elgaali, 20, from Greensboro was murdered August 12th.

The Light House community has gotten to know Hassan through his performance at Notable Pursuits. His ability to bring joy to those around him, and his pursuit of his passion distinguished him.

As a platform, Notable Pursuits is designed to share our stories and build bridges amongst our youth so that we can celebrate each other. Today we can celebrate Hassan as an artist and as a contributing member of our community. And as such, we ask for your help today.

Hassan is leaving behind two sisters, a younger brother, parents, and an entire community both in North Carolina and Sudan.

As Hassan's family will be traveling back to Sudan for a while, his mother's wish is for him to be buried in Sudan.

Please help make this possible by donating any amount you can. We appreciate your contributions. The link is in the comments.

Please share.

Help Sustain the Light House

At the Light House we are working toward a world where Muslim Americans feel safe, valued, and empowered in their country. The Light House Project is made up of four initiatives:

The Light House

In 2017 we completed work on converting Deah Barakat's house in downtown Raleigh into office space and a community resource center, hosting programs like these through it:

  • Triangle Muslim Professionals - Providing networking, mentoring, and workshops to post-college Muslims in the Triangle area.
  • Nearby non profit organizations
