Methodist Home for Children

Methodist Home for Children We work to provide safe, stable homes where children and families can build on their strengths and live fully into their God-given potential.

For more than 100 years, Methodist Home for Children (MHC) has provided care for North Carolina’s youth and families. Founded in 1899 as a traditional campus-based orphanage in Raleigh, MHC is now a community-based agency active throughout North Carolina, especially in the central and eastern regions. MHC provides an array of programs and services to: • ensure that children grow up in safe, loving homes • educate parents and caregivers about how best to nurture children and young adults • help young people navigate adolescence and • work to eradicate the social and family problems that lead to abuse, neglect, family disruption, and child abandonment.

Today we honor the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by reflecting on his words. This passage is one we stress with the kids who are in our care: "Everybody can be great ... because anybody can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.”

As so many struggle, we were humbled by the families who came to us bringing gifts - and it didn't stop there - churches, hoteliers, restaurants, schools, foundations, fitness clubs, hospitals, car dealerships, house cleaning services, radio stations, book stores, and friends on Facebook ALL joined together to make sure our children and families had joy at Christmas. We are thankful beyond measure. Your giving brought more joy than you can imagine.

Advent 2 | Meeting by chance

At this particular moment in time – as we find ourselves physically separated from each other and our places of worship – it’s more important than ever to remember that transformations happen, not as scheduled, but as the result of chance encounters. Advent reminds us of the greatest chance encounter – It’s one we celebrate at Christmas. Watch Bruce Stanley's meditation. #advent

"Thou art the potter, I am the clay ..." (from: Have Thine Own Way)
What image comes to mind when you join in the singing of this hymn? Most of us imagine a beautiful piece of pottery, perfectly molded and blessed by God. But have you ever considered the actual molding process, and how that must feel to the clay? As Advent begins let us humble ourselves and remember: We are the clay. Come Lord Jesus. We are waiting. #advent

The boys peeled 10 pounds of potatoes and 2 bags of pears. One sautéed the celery and onions for the stuffing. One made streusel topping for the pear crisp. One made the gravy - from scratch! Another used the rolling pin (a first!) to make the rolls. One teen had never even seen a turkey before! Working together (under Chef Ralph's watchful eye) these teens created a feast like no other. Full of thanks (and turkey!) this was a day they will always remember. 💜🧡❤️

I dare you to look at his face and not smile back. You can't ... It's impossible! He's 12 years old and it was his first trip to the zoo. We're not sure, but we *think* he enjoyed it (!). Seriously, it was a great day for everyone. They learned things - ("I'm taller than the orangutan but have only 1/2 the wingspan!") - had an impromptu picnic - and stopped for ice cream on the way home. 💜🧡❤️ #fieldtripsaregreat #everychilddeservesachance #theylikedthemonkeysbest

In one class, each student made a "kindness bracelet" to give to a friend. In another class, the children practiced saying "thank you" to teachers. All of the children had the chance to give - and receive - a special act of kindness. It was such a profoundly beautiful and uplifting day that one tiny student asked if we could do it again tomorrow. Yes, my child, we can. 💜🧡❤️
Want to share kindness day with your family? We have a list of ideas and activities on instagram - @mhc_family. See you there!

"I hung it up so it's the first thing I see in the morning, and then I know what I have to do."

Goal boards. Each teen wrote the most important thing at the top, then started breaking it down, from 5 years to 3 to 1, then daily goals. N., who is only 12, wants to come out of his box and put a lot of things behind him - so to get himself there he put lots of boxes on his board. When you open them, there are encouraging messages such as "Never stop dreaming" and "Admit, don't quit." We believe every child deserves a chance - and we believe these kids are going to find their potential and meet their goals. Find more goal boards on Instagram - @mhc_family 💜🧡❤️

November is National Adoption Awareness month and - all this month - we want to show you what it's really like to adopt a child (or two or even five!).

This family has an unbelievably sweet story that includes a special connection to MHC. Not only did the mom and dad adopt this fun-loving girl and her brother, but the paternal grandmother actually grew up with us in the Methodist Orphanage of Raleigh! I just did 5300 steps to take me to 15,366 steps which is more than I usually do. I was hoping that someone would match those steps with dollars. use this link : https://www.givecampus.com/fygip8 donate if you can....share the cause.....This is doing God's will.....
Through the years, Keith and I have enjoyed spending time with children from Methodist Home for Children at Jarvis Memorial's annual Angel Tree Christmas party. We have seen results of the care, support, and loving guidance provided by the dedicated staff. Weve been inspied. Spending time with these kids and the staff give us hope. Keith and I have been blessed in uncountable ways, so here is an opportunity to PAY IT FORWARD. Please join us in donating today to Methodist Home for Children.
I have been blessed with the very best family, both as a child and now with my own husband and 2 sweet boys. I #payitforward4kids because I want all kids to know just how special the love of family is. Every single child deserves that... We have the chance to share our blessings so that others can have that opportunity. Visit payitforward.mhfc.org to make your gift.
October 20th! Put it on your calendar...OCTOBER 20TH...spread the word, go to the bank and tell others....OCTOBER 20TH.
Wonderful organization that has helped so many children and families through the years. Consider a donation!!
I was at the Methodist Home for Children from 1961-1963, does anyone remember me? Thanks
This is a photo I found a few years back online through the NC State Archives. My mother is the little girl with dark hair and bangs in the white dress holding the doll. They are on the Methodist Orphanage grounds and someone came to take their picture and I believe it was for a newspaper. I do not recall a year but it is about 1949. My mom appears to be about 10 years old. I do not know the other little girls names.
Methodist Home for Children is a great not-for-profit that helps abused and neglected children. They also do a wonderful job arranging and supporting adoptions.
Why we pay it forward! Pay it forward day at Methodist Home for Children! Help other children find forever homes!! https://www.givecampus.com/9xtvk4 #thisismyfamily #payitforward
This is my family. I am beyond grateful for the love and stability they have provided for me throughout my life. I #payitforward4kids because Methodist Home for Children works to provide the same things for children and families across North Carolina. https://www.givecampus.com/wtw0j9
My family is my greatest blessing and having my own child changes the way I look at everything...I 'Pay It Forward' so that other kids can know the love and support that a family brings. https://www.givecampus.com/wzhicg
