The American College of Veterinary Ophthalmology Genetics Committee recently published clear diagnostic guidelines for Golden Retriever Pigmentary Uveitis, an inflammatory eye disease seen in Golden Retrievers. Breeders, owners, and primary care veterinary professionals should be familiar with this disease since accurate diagnosis and early treatment can slow its progression. I am an AKC Breeder and I genetically test my dogs, because my ultimate goal is to eradicate the genetic diseases from my dogs. As a top Registry in the US, why would AKC not require breeders to genetically test their dogs? Having that information on the lineage would help breeders all over. Knowing what to breed and what not to breed to. Science and Technology has come a long why. These old style breeders are still breeding on guess work. Not truly knowing what the genetic makeup of their dogs are. I recently purchased (2 years ago) a Corgi that was "thought" to be healthy with no problems. Didn't know the importance of genetic testing, until I met Elizabeth Greenwood. So in my venture to better my program and have healthy show stock, I have recently started testing and will have all my dogs tested by the end of the year. I got the test results back on my healthy Corgi and she's DM at Risk. You can only imagine the gut feeling I had, but I am going to love her till end of days. The breeder tried to diminish my concern and my test that was done. I believe it to be very important to genetically test our dogs and it's even more important that AKC make it a requirement. How can we work towards getting them to make it a requirement instead of an option?
