The North Carolina Community Foundation is the single statewide community foundation serving North Carolina and has made more than $161 million in grants since its inception in 1988. With more than $284 million in assets, NCCF sustains more than 1,300 endowments established to provide long-term support of a broad range of community needs, nonprofit organizations, institutions and scholarships. An important component of NCCF’s mission is to ensure that rural philanthropy has a voice at local, regional and national levels.

Sarah Belk Gambrell, Charlotte philanthropist from Belk retail family, dies at 102

We are sad to see the passing of Sarah Belk Gambrell. We fondly remember her lifetime of philanthropy and remain grateful for her service as a member of our statewide board. We're thankful for the legacy of generosity she leaves and her commitment to our state.

Gambrell played roles at the Belk department store chain and created the Gambrell Foundation in 1988.

The North Carolina Community Foundation heard that Jere Snyder and I were making a documentary about the catastrophic floods that followed Hurricanes Matthew and Florence. Then the foundation made a generous grant to our non-profit to ensure that the work was completed. For that, we are eternally grateful. Please watch it at 10 p.m. Thursday, July 9, on UNC-TV.
