Time spent on our Yadkin 01 bank sites last week makes us appreciate the work we do to restore our degraded natural systems. These sites were buzzing (literally!) with both flora and fauna. The Eastern Tiger Swallowtail butterfly (Papilio glaucus) was everywhere nectaring on the newly sprouted Bearded Beggarticks (Bidens aristosa).

WLS is waving goodbye, at a social distance, with lobster claws! Thank you for all you have done for WLS Nikki! We wish you the best of luck with your move to Bar Harbor, Maine. We hope you enjoy eating lobster every day :)
This spring WLS constructed four projects! In total WLS restored over 27,000 linear feet of streams, over 13 acres of wetlands, and planted over 63,000 trees. These projects also provide 650,000 square feet of riparian buffer credit and 65,000 pounds of nutrient offset credits.
Our four projects permanently protected more than 115 acres of forested riparian land through permanent conservation easements. It was a busy spring but we got the job done!

Happy 5 Year Anniversary Kayne Van Stell!
Kayne Van Stell is many things: devoted husband and father, ecological restoration savant, angler, and noted Chicago-phile to name just a few. He is NOT married to Kim Kardashian, despite what his favorite t-shirt may imply!
Kayne, on behalf of the WLS Team, landowners, contractors, clients, and the ecological restoration industry, thank you for five incredible years at WLS!

Last week we were fortunate enough to find and survey an example of a zero order stream for one of our projects in Lenoir County, NC! Below is a picture of the headwater system flowing over the roots of a tree into a pool at the bottom. Also included is a picture of a natural wood riffle where you can see the stream morphology is more defined.

WLS Visits Eastern Tennessee State University!
Christopher Tomsic with our Weaverville office was given the opportunity to talk with Ingrid Luffman’s Geomorphology class at Eastern Tennessee State University (ETSU) about everything environmental restoration; including career paths, the current state of the environmental field, and lessons learned. As part of his visit, Christopher spent time in the field with the ETSU Rainworks Challenge Team to provide input on restoration approaches for Brush Creek (a stream that flows through the ETSU Johnson City campus impaired for nitrates, siltation, anthropogenic habitat alterations, and E.coli). The Rainworks Challenge Team lead by Ingrid is currently seeking ETSU Facilities Improvement funds to come up with design approaches for treating stormwater runoff , eroding stream banks, and anthropogenic modifications along Brush Creek. Much thanks for the opportunity Ingrid!
The excitement continues for WLS as we have added our 6th person to the Team since January 1st! This hire is one of the most well respected and well-known names in the industry! WLS is extremely excited and lucky to bring in Daniel to help lead WLS with his vast experience, knowledge, and outstanding reputation in the industry!

WLS celebrated 5 years of business in September!
We are thankful for our amazing team of employees; they are the reason WLS is what it is today! We celebrated with a fun and competitive scavenger hunt in downtown Raleigh, followed by a delicious dinner with friends and family!
WLS staff recently collected field data to help in the design of our 15,000 linear feet restoration site named Banner Branch, located in Stokes County, North Carolina. We completed pebble counts, cross sections, sediment samples and completed the Bank Erosion Hazard Index assessment (BEHI). We even saw a few salamanders and a snake along the way! Our team is very anxious to get this project designed and constructed in order to start improving the water quality in this area.

WLS featured in NC Policy Watch publication!
http://www.ncpolicywatch.com/2019/08/30/our-wetlands-and-streams-are-worth-saving-but-its-incredibly-hard-to-do/
Water & Land Solutions (WLS) staff along with the NC Division of Mitigation Services (NCDMS) were recently involved with an NC Policy Watch publication highlighting the value and challenges of compensatory mitigation and ecosystem restoration. This environmental policy article was released a few months after NC legislature representatives visited WLS projects to learn about the ecological importance and financial structure of these restoration projects. As a mitigation provider for both NCDMS and NCDOT, WLS takes pride in implementing high quality projects and educating the public on why restoration is critical to improving water quality, wildlife habitat, and protecting our natural resources.

Fun Fishing Trip!
Check out how WLS’s Chris Tomsic spent part of his recent vacation in Florida fishing with his family. His family had fun catching blacktip, hammerhead, and bonnethead sharks as well as mackerel and an enormous tarpon. All the fish were caught and released. What a great time!

Great Time in Colorado!
It was great to connect with friends and colleagues at the Rocky Mountain Stream Restoration Conference in Estes Park, CO.
After the conference, we were fortunate to hike the Chasm Lake Trail in Rocky Mountain National Park. This high-altitude trail provides breathtaking views and an alpine lake tucked into a glacial cirque below the towering East Face of 14,259-foot Longs Peak.
Along the trail, we observed wildlife, amazing geologic features, and even learned a new term called ‘Krummholz’, which means twisted wood in German and describes the stunted, irregular growth patterns of trees in the ecological transition zone between subalpine forests and alpine tundra. We even found a restoration site above 11,000 feet!

Check out our outdoor classroom!
Last week Adam and Catherine spent a few days acquainting our new hires Kyle, Emily, and Nick on the intricacies and processes associated with some of our mitigation sites. The crew got a great look at both Coastal Plain and Piedmont sites. The team reviewed hydric soil conditions, wetland delineation, and baseline data collection methods to assess stream conditions. WLS is excited about the new additions to the team and integrating them into our existing projects. As a company comprised of engineers and scientists, we take great pleasure in developing our People through education, research, and project implementation. #restoration #waterandlandsolutions #environment
