Going on regular walks or low-intensity workouts is great. But try to get your heartrate up for at least 15 min. a day.

Last week's speaker: Michael Schoor, Founder of the Spirit League Special Needs Basketball North Carolina

Michael spoke to us about how he founded and runs the Spirit League. In 2015, Michael Schoor and his then-fiancée, Laura, started the Spirit League. The goal was to help provide teens and young adults with special needs a place to play basketball year-round.

Almost four years later, the league has close to 45 players and meets a couple of times a month at two locations in Apex and Wake Forest. All levels of ability are welcome. That includes those with hearing and visual impairments, players in wheelchairs, on the autism spectrum and other challenges.

Last week's speaker: Mike Wienold, Past President of the Rotary Club of North Raleigh

It was great to see and hear from Mike last week. He's enjoying the drier air of Durango, CO, where the town population is 18,000 and the La Plata county population is 60,000. Here are some links Mike shared with the group. He said he found an answer to the question about Mesa Verde: the Pueblos occupied the area from 600 to 1300 CE.

Join us as we hear from Mike Wienold from Durango, Colorado. Mike is a Past President of our Rotary Club and moved to CO last year. We look forward to hearing about how he and his family are doing out west.

Last week's speaker: John Nanni, Rotarian, Leader, and Polio Survivor

WOW! What a powerful presentation. John is a polio survivor, paralyzed from his neck down for six months just prior to the Salk Vaccine distribution. He now uses a wheelchair for most of his daily mobility due to severe Post-Polio Syndrome issues. A few things we learned:

- There are many similarities to the early days of polio and COVID-19: easily spread, ventilators used for recovery (the Iron Lung for polio), some individuals are asymptommatic, post-disease symptoms showing up later in life.
- Post-polio syndrome appears 30-40 years later for 70% of polio survivors.

Club News:

- Congratulations to Steven Nelson for winning a Shibumi Shade in last week's raffle!
- Congratulations to Dee Dee Heard for winning a North Raleigh Rotary vanity plate in last week's raffle!
- Sertoma is still closed for group rentals. I will update you when that changes.
- Saturday, Sept. 26 - Adopt-a-Highway Clean-Up.
Where: Steve Ramirez's UPS Store at 6300 Creedmoor Rd #170, Raleigh, NC 27612.
When: 9-11am
Who: We are looking for at least 6-8 volunteers. Contact Steven Nelson if you would like to volunteer.
Will there be coffee and doughnuts? Yes.

This week's speaker: Eva Hahn, Taking Zoom to the Next Level
Very excited to have Eva Hahn AKA The Princess of the Universe present to the club this week! Eva has been married to Eric Hahn for 12 years. She works as an Instructional Designer for Grifols Plasma. She previously worked as a school teacher for 14 years, then worked at Novo Nordisk before moving to Grifols. Eva will teach us how to use Zoom more effectively. She'll discuss breakout rooms, using a whiteboard, and more.

Also - Eva is looking for another Instructional Designer position. She's interested in work from home full-time and making six figures. Please reach out to her or Eric if you know of any openings!

Last week's speaker: Ken Schmidt, You Can Still Eat Like a Civil War Soldier (But It'll Kill You)

Thank you Ken for speaking to the group last week! Very interesting presentation. Ken is a retired US Army chaplain and a retired Lutheran pastor. The Civil War is his lifelong hobby and he showed us how diet and nutrition affected the health of the Civil War soldier. A few things we learned:

- Civil War soldiers were promised lots of food but ultimately, their daily rations consisted of one pound of hard bread, coffee, and possibly beef or bacon.
- Soldiers had vitamin deficiencies and scurvy due to the lack of fruits and vegetables in their diet.
- Their diet was so poor that soldiers were twice as likely to die from their diet than citizens who were not fighting.
