My colleague in Washington, Rev. Michael Langer, requests prayer in light of the happenings today on Capitol Hill.
The mission of Ministry to State is to minister to those serving in government. Two of our primary areas of emphasis in our ministry are:
It’s getting busy again at the capitol. Folks are shuffling into new offices, new legislative aides are learning their way around the complex, and newly elected officials are being inaugurated.
It was a privilege to be at Lt. Governor Mark Robinson’s inauguration this afternoon. North Carolina’s new Chief Justice Paul Martin Newby, administered the oath of office.

Ministry to State is a missional partner of Mission to North America, serving as a ministry of evangelism and discipleship to those in government positions with five fundamental objectives:
"During times of political divisions, it is more important than ever that the church seek unity with one another rather than importing the divisions of our political systems into our churches. It is the church’s role to work to heal the divisions caused by political partisanship by demonstrating and offering unity that comes from the gospel."
As we move forward in this nation, we are called to be ministers of reconciliation to God, and the most important aspect of proclaiming that message is our unity.

It was a great privilege to preach and share about Ministry to State this morning at Adams Farm Community Church (ARP) in Jamestown/Greensboro. It's always such an encouragement to see churches giving thoughtful, prayerful consideration of how citizens of the Kingdom of God can live with Christ-like distinctiveness in the kingdom of this world.

Ministry to
Candidate Sighting!
Thankful to be able to encourage a Congressional candidate Darin spotted in the Lowe's grocery store parking lot tonight. He had been putting out signs all day.
Please keep all political candidates in your prayers. May all those running be encouraged in their efforts to serve people. May they see God at work as they consider things greater than themselves.
“Render [or give] to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”
This pithy response says a lot more than you might think. This one sentence gives the beginning of a Christian view of politics and religion. It’s a foundational statement for the Christian way of looking at issues of church and state, issues of God and government. There are at least six implications for our view of church and state in this one sentence—six statements about God and government that flow from this response.
The state’s power is limited. Our allegiance to country or government is never absolute. But our allegiance to God is comprehensive.
For Christians young and old, black and white, of whatever partisan persuasion, remember that what you share in common with a fellow member of Christ’s body is more significant (and eternally longer lasting) than your differences. Remember that as much as politics is a powerful wedge between generations, Christ is an even more powerful bond.
The dynamic of being disappointed—even incensed—by your parents’ (or your children’s) politics is not new.

Scripture reminds us of many accounts in which God’s people, equipped with the gospel, engaged with those in positions of power. The impact of unleashing the gospel in a government center has enormous potential for the flourishing of communities and nations.

Don't Forget! Ministering to Those Serving in Government - https://mailchi.mp/pcanet/ministry-to-state-8307982
A prayer for our country, from the Book of Common Prayer.
To be a Christian is to belong simultaneously to two different kingdoms...
How does that work out in practice?
What if the demands of the one run contrary to the demands of the other?
If you are a child of God through faith in Christ then you are a citizen of the here and coming Kingdom of God and you are subject to various lesser but legitimate human authorities.

“Most readers of this article will be citizens in democratic republics who have the right to speak, to organize, to petition, and to vote. They should absolutely be thinking carefully about how they can act in a responsible and loving way in the light of both their vertical relationship to God and their horizontal relationships with fellow image bearers. I think it is useful to think in terms of the brotherhood and sisterhood of men and women under the fatherhood of God.”
If we take the lordship of Christ in our lives seriously, then we should seek to apply that lordship to our participation in politics.

Perhaps this year, during election season, we might do well to reflect on who’s excellencies we are proclaiming and what hope and flourishing we believe they are promising.
The descriptions of the urgency and importance of proclaiming the excellencies of someone who will lead us to flourishing are just as suited to the 2020 election, as they have been in every election cycle.

"Maturity does not come through relaxing on the sandy beaches of the Mediterranean coast. Maturity comes when life demands that we examine our hearts, motives, and priorities according to the truth of Scripture. Trials and suffering help us to focus on that which is of true value."
Read today's devotional by MTS founder and Executive Director, Rev. Chuck Garriott.
James himself does not include specifics when referring to trials. But he does say we should consider them “pure joy.” Why should we accept James' view of what we naturally would avoid?
