Thank you Food Lion #GreatPantryMakeover for upgrading The Salvation Army of Jacksonville, NC (our Partner Agency) facilities and capacity to serve Onslow and Jones County residents!

#FoodLionFeeds provided a brand new commercial-size refrigerator, 3 pop-up tents for Mobile Food Pantry distributions, and a permanent aluminum awning for their building. Now the Salvation Army can store & distribute more healthy perishable foods, and they can run drive-thru distributions in any weather, keeping families nourished and safe during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Glory Tabernacle International Ministries (Our Partner Agency) in Franklin County is more prepared than ever to serve clients during COVID-19, thanks to Food Lion's #GreatPantryMakeover! Five Food Lion employees helped with both food restocking and landscaping a new driveway and overhang that will allow the pantry to safely and efficiently provide drive-thru food distributions.

And of course #FoodLionFeeds did what they do best: restocked Glory Tabernacle’s shelves with a generous pallet of canned goods, cereals, pasta, and other shelf stable items from Food Lion, alongside some perishable items provided by the Food Bank. In addition to the food and yardwork, Food Lion also provided Glory Tabernacle with $800 in gift cards! Pantry coordinator Ms. Helen Long says that gift came at “exactly the right time” for the pantry to provide Thanksgiving boxes, complete with turkeys, sides, and all the fixings a family would need to celebrate the holidays.

During times of change our neighbors living with food insecurity and who are considered most vulnerable, can feel even more uncertain about what the future may hold. The response to the COVID-19 crisis has been very different from a weather-based natural disaster.

However, just like the storms we’ve faced in the past, we know the devastating impact is long-lasting and the need for increased hunger-relief support will continue for months.

🌀 Our Partner Agency First Baptist Church Vass first joined the Food Bank as a Hurricane Florence relief distribution site, to serve heavily flooded rural areas of eastern Moore County.

📈 Between the closure of another Partner Agency in the region and the onset of COVID-19, their small pantry has more than doubled in service volume this year!

🥫 On the day Food Lion employees arrived for their Great Pantry Restock, they expertly filled up the pantry with complimentary food and also helped build food boxes when a few folks came by for emergency food assistance. Thank you #FoodLionFeeds for strengthening our Partner Agencies, so they can be there for neighbors in need!

Update: 22,327 meals were raised at this year's socially distanced Food Lion Hunger Relief Day at the N.C. State Fair, through food & cash donations from generous fair patrons, staff, and vendors.

At a time when our monthly food distribution has doubled, this will help us meet the increased need across our service area. Find food & ways to help: foodbankcenc.org/covid19

We hope we can see everyone at the Fair next year!

Food Lion Hunger Relief Day at the N.C. State Fair looks a little different this year. But with 1-in-5 North Carolinians facing food insecurity due to COVID-19, it’s extra important.

Thank you to our incredible partners, volunteers, and generous community for making the transition to a drive-drop-and-go format, and helping us meet the increased need!

Due to the pandemic, our Partner Agency Folkstone Original Free Will Baptist Church Pantry had to cancel a few big, annual food drives they typically rely on to help stock their shelves. At the same time, they've served over 655,000 meals this year to Onslow County neighbors in need — an increase, due to COVID-19.

So #FoodLionFeeds donated $800 in gift cards plus an entire pallet of food! Local Food Lion employees spent the day neatly stocking the shelves and even helped unload a delivery from a Food Bank truck too.

All was received with gratitude by Mrs. Yvonne Saunders, who founded Folkstone Pantry in 2012 with her sisters. "We have family & friends who are commercial fishermen, and sometimes they can't feed their family," she said.

Feeding America estimates that food insecurity will affect nearly 1 in 5 North Carolina residents, or 19.3%, this year. Already, area food banks and pantries have seen demand go "through the roof" and many wonder if they'll be able to keep pace.

Strengthening our Partner Agency Network of local pantries is crucial to meeting the 38% increase in need from COVID-19. Our friends at Food Lion are answering the call by sending staff & food to stock shelves at 9 of our Partner Agencies, including 4 facility makeovers! First up was Upon This Rock (Granville County), which has been nourishing over 1,000 people each month since the pandemic started. Thank you #FoodLionFeeds!
