Had a great time meeting ECU dancers as we begin making and moving toward PATRIOT 21. What it means to be back in Greenville and dancing in the very studios that set me on a life journey...there are no words to describe it! April 2021... more to come.

Patriot - n. a person who loves, supports, and defends his or her country and its interests with devotion. A person who regards themselves as a defender, especially of individual rights, against presumed interference by detractors. Thank you to Purple Heart veteran and BBDT member, Alfredo Hurtado, and all whose service and sacrifice we honor today!

💜Black Box is looking forward to returning to engaging dance during (masked and socially distant) Warrior Reset programming at Camp Lejeune on December 8.

The Story of a Mother: Elba's Story

I felt such a great and uncontrollable pain when I saw my son leave in an ARMY bus to the airport. A piece of my heart was leaving with him. Arriving home and seeing his empty bed caused me to continue crying without comfort. It took me weeks to adapt to his physical absence. I know that he is well prepared for any eventuality and I resign myself, but I don't miss him. I just pray and ask God to take care of me and protect him.

Share your story with us, be part of PATRIOT. #PATRIOTmoves

Our Latest Work: PATRIOT

Over the years Black Box has had the opportunity to work with military and veteran communities across North Carolina and have been inspired by those who have served, spouses, family, and friends. In the Spring of 2019, Day of Dialogue allowed Black Box to connected for a day of conversations, art-making and dancing to explore some of the complex issues our military and veterans face. At the end of the day, workshop members and military participants came together for a powerful performance incorporating the stories told throughout the day. Touched by this impactful day, Black Box knew more would come from Day of Dialogue, but were left thinking “what next” ?

BBDT spent the summer fueled by the energy, insistence, and artistry of those met through dance. Feeling like there was much to be told and explored, we began making what would become PATRIOT. In the fall, Black Box traveled to Boston, where they worked with military participants and local dancers at The Dance Complex. During this expanded three part workshop series all active duty military, veterans, their families and the dance artist community were invited again to explore complex issues facing our veteran and active duty military and culminated in a collaborative performance piece.

PATRIOT is a collection of personal stories of service, sacrifice, and soul-searching gathered over the years. Black Box dance theater along with veterans and the military community will premiere an original dance work made through a series of workshops exploring the complex challenges facing our military in America 2019. Here’s what’s being said by those we’ve met along the way:

“If ever there was a need for the power of embodied movement in telling one's story it seems that this is it. Black Box Dance Theatre of Raleigh NC work with active military service members and veterans to tell the stories that are hard to put into words. Their work with these communities tells a story more powerfully than others that I have seen.” Jim Stiles (Audience)

During these trying times, Black Box Dance Theater remains a spark of creativity and joy. BBDT has continued to create art new work for the PATRIOT project (all socially distanced of course!) and has delivered very rich and well received virtual content to numerous partners. Yes - you can dance on ZOOM! BBDT has very carefully stewarded its financial resources at this time, and has secured some additional support from grant agencies, but the company relies on the generosity of its supporters who care about this work. With the hope of some normality on the horizon, BBDT is gearing up to launch PATRIOT to audiences throughout the state. As Chair of the Board of BBDT, I am asking you to consider a donation on Giving Tuesday to us to bring this amazing art to the State of NC and beyond. Thank you.
Years of great dancing in the schools has us ready for some AWESOME lessons. Seriously, we have learned so much by embodying content from science/math/history and more. Have fun! you move us, we move you. stay healthy, stay human.
Hi friends.... I can not tell you how hard these artists work. Time after time, I have witnessed beautiful and honest connections that each dancer has made with complete strangers. They invite, listen, and lean in (literally) to people of all ages, backgrounds, abilities, and histories. They let dance be the language of understanding, laughter, tears, support, healing, celebration, and humanity. The smallest gift would be meaningful ....
