If you bought a new television on Black Friday and it will be sitting on top of a piece of furniture, be sure to secure it if little ones are nearby. Prevent tip-overs!

As you're shopping for a new TV or furniture this Black Friday, make sure you buy tip-over straps too!

Tip-overs can happen even when you're watching your kids, and anchoring your TVs and furniture to the wall is a great way to keep your children safe.

Thank you to Promotional Partners and Olivia Scott, long time supporters of Safe Kids Wake County, for your recent $200 donation!

Promotional Partners ran a kids t-shirt design contest and the sales from the winning design were donated to Safe Kids Wake County. We got to meet the young artist named Fielder who is 6 years old and lives in Apex, NC. His design can be colored in on the white t-shirts. Fielder came dressed as the cowboy in his design and this young artist made 18 more designs after submitting his original one. He likes to draw!

Two opportunities this week - Fuquay tomorrow and Holly Springs on Thursday for Operation Medicine Drop!

An average of four people per day are dying from overdose in North Carolina, with 79% of those deaths involving some type of opioid. With children spending more time at home during the COVID-19 pandemic, now is a very important time to remove unwanted drugs from the home.

Insurance Commissioner and Safe Kids N.C. Chair, Mike Causey, invites the public to drop off their unused medication at our Operation Medicine Drop (OMD) prescription drug take-back event or drop box in their area.

OMD is a FREE drug take-back program that gives people a safe and secure way to dispose of unwanted, over-the counter and prescription medications. To find a drop box or a take-back event near you, go to meddrop.ncdoi.com

We will miss seeing everyone at the NC State Fair, but safety never stops. Read over these tips for roadway safety that you can practice daily! Safe Kids North Carolina

Today would have been the first day of the North Carolina State Fair, where NCGHSP has sponsored for several years past, the Safety City exhibit: a virtual highway safety community that seeks to decrease roadway injuries and fatalities by educating attendees on safe driving behaviors. (see past photos here: https://flic.kr/s/aHsmHVbqrb )

Since we could not host Safety City this year due to COVID-19 restrictions; NCGHSP would like to pass on these simple roadway safety tips that can save your life or the life of someone around you:

=> 1 Buckle up. Wearing your seatbelt decreases your chances of dying in a crash by almost half.
=> 2 Drive sober. Use a ride sharing app, take public transportation, call a friend; speak up if someone is under the influence and planning to get behind the wheel!
=> 3 Slow Down. Pay Attention. Distracted driving and speeding claim lives every day and are preventable behaviors.

NCGHSP would also like to thank some of the national, state and local agencies who may have been planning on participating in Safety City this year. Your commitment to roadway safety is appreciated.

Vote for your favorite design!

UPDATE 8/17: Voting is now closed.

T-Shirt Design Contest voting is now open! Thank you to everyone who participated and shared our contest. We had SO many wonderful entries from kids ages 5-11, that if it were up to us, we wouldn't be able to choose!

The first 7 entries are from local kids, entry 8 is a sample idea we came up with. We thought as this is a contest based around community, that we'd offer the option to combine elements from each entry into one! If you like this idea, please let us know your favorites pieces from the amazing entries! #OhThePopsibilities

How to vote:

👍 Please vote for your favorite entry by "liking" it!
👍 Voting will last until next Monday, August 17

*Make sure to encourage your friends and family to vote as well!
