Patients of WakeMed’s Rehabilitation Hospital had the chance to do some holiday shopping for themselves and their loved ones. The WakeMed Foundation, our Rehab team and the Gift Shop at WakeMed Raleigh Campus created a Holiday Market for Rehab patients who are unable to shop for gifts inside local stores this year, thanks to a generous gift from the Law Offices of James Scott Farrin.
.
The special shopping experience, which followed the 3Ws and social distancing guidelines, included music, a gift wrapping station and more. Additionally, WakeMed therapists incorporated aspects of strength exercises and occupational therapy into each patient's shopping session.
.
We are so grateful to receive their donation and support, which had such a positive impact on our patients!

Staff volunteers in the Children’s Hospital hosted a family Christmas event on Tuesday evening - thanks, in part, to a generous, anonymous donation through the WakeMed Foundation. While pediatric patients were spoiled with toys and treats, parents enjoyed Chick-fil-A meals and other goodies.

Special thanks to the following organizations for making this evening festive for our families in the NICU, 4E Pediatric floor, PICU, Children’s Rehab and Children’s Emergency Department:

-Me Fine Foundation for donating beverages for parent meals
-Ronald McDonald House of Durham & Wake for donating snacks and toy bags for families in the Children’s Emergency Department
-March of Dimes for donating holiday ornaments and keepsake items for our NICU families
-Chick-fil-A at Capital Crossings for donating 50 toy bags to our 4E Pediatric, PICU and Pediatric Rehab patients along with 20 meals for our staff volunteers

Our pediatric patients were so excited when Santa and his elves popped by for a visit at WakeMed Children’s today! Santa made sure to social distance this year during his visit, but he was still able to see those Christmas lists being held up by our patients and send a wink and a wave their way to spread some cheer to all! 🎅😊

A couple of weeks ago, WakeMed Children’s accepted over 70 Scentsy Buddies from Scentsy Director, Elisha Shehdan, and her team. Please read Elisha’s “Why” for giving back to WakeMed Children’s.

“Late July, our son Lucas became a very sick little boy. He was gradually depleting his iron, and we had no idea. He went from being a happy and energetic baby, to a tired, fussy, pale and zero-desire-to-eat toddler! We had no idea what could be wrong. The pediatrician thought it was just low iron, but my mom instincts felt it was more. Thank God we had a sweet friend who instructed us to take him to WakeMed."

"Once we arrived at Wake Med Children’s Emergency Room, we were immediately taken care of. Tests were run and diagnoses were made. Our poor baby had to receive a blood transfusion, iron treatments and a procedure for his intussusceptions. It was truly a nightmare that we were unprepared for! We were in the hospital for three long days, and the Wake Med Staff were amazing! They gave Lucas exceptional care. The doctors were so thorough and explained everything along the way! One special thing they did was provide toys for him. It truly brightened his mood and comforted him while we were there! You can see in the picture that he received a Scentsy buddy! We were so touched by this, that our family decided to give back this season! Our family and members of my Scentsy Team (several of whom also have had wonderful experiences at Wake Med) were able to donate over 70 buddies! All were sponsored by friends, family and local businesses. We pray these buddies will be able to comfort many other children who will also be cared for at Wake Med Children’s Hospital. We are so thankful that our son‘s treatment has allowed him to make a full recovery! We plan to continue donating annually and hope that others will consider donating as well!”

This week, WakeMed Children’s graciously accepted donations from Katie Haynes, founder of Smiling while sending Hope!!!! Katie is a sophomore at Southern New Hampshire University Online from Youngsville, North Carolina.

“I have many chronic illnesses that include POTS, EDS Type 3, MCAS and CRPS and many more. It has always been a big mission my whole life, even before getting sick, to make an impact on people’s lives. I am making this mission come alive by doing toy drives, smile packages, awareness videos and sending VOGMASK® to people. I have done toy drives and smile bags and many other projects across NC, VA and OH at many hospitals and RDMH! Making an impact on others lives is what I love to do, and I believe that this mission will continue to grow and continue to help many others in the future!"

"My goal with this project is to bring smiles to people’s faces and to help spread awareness of many illnesses and diseases. Not to focus on the illness but to shine light and show others who do not have them not to judge others who may have one. Our Love Light Family: The McLamb Family

Our Love Light tradition continues this year as we honor a special pediatric patient. This year’s Love Light family is the McLamb family. Two years ago, an x-ray revealed their three-year-old, Tyler, had swallowed a small watch battery. A local urgent care sent him immediately to WakeMed Children’s Emergency Department where his long journey to recovery began.
