Partners of the Month: Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Raleigh and New Hanover Disaster Coalition

It’s September and aside from marking the end of tourist season, it’s also Hurricane Preparedness Month and the two-year anniversary of Hurricane Florence on Monday. There’s no better time to acknowledge the good collaborative work of our Partners, Catholic Charities and New Hanover Disaster Coalition.

Before and immediately after Hurricane Florence, Catholic Charities’ Emilie Hart and Harrelson Center’s Meade Van Pelt met to consider how best to coordinate their disaster response. Working with area pastors and faith communities, the American Red Cross, United Way and others, they quickly organized an impressive team of staff and volunteers to collect, store and distribute needed supplies from their warehouse, coordinated with state and federal agencies, and attempted to bring efficiency into an inherently chaotic time.

Perhaps the best measure of their success is the founding of the New Hanover Disaster Coalition which, under the leadership of Audrey Hart, has allowed the sisters to work together. Daily, they demonstrate their shared expertise and mutual determination to feed, clothe and house those who have met disaster, while reaching into community to educate and prepare others for coming storms, be they hurricanes or pandemics.

Audrey and Emilie look holistically at root problems to mitigate disaster impact: making sure families in low-lying areas understand their particular vulnerability or identifying immigrant families who may be compromised in following health directives. We applaud their continued work to make our communities and neighbors more disaster-ready. We look back to September 2018 and know what a difference this commitment made, and we look forward to future impact on community preparedness and strategy.

Father Capodanno Memorial Mass September 17

A special Mass will be held at St Jude Joliet on September 17 in lieu of the September Catholic Man Night. The Mass is in honor of Father Vincent Capodanno, known as the "Grunt Priest". His service in Vietnam as a chaplain was truly extraordinary. The anniversary of his death on the battlefield is September 4th.
Lt. Vincent Capodanno served with the 1st Marine Division in Vietnam. His dedication and tender care of "his Marines" earned him the highest respect of those who served with him. Father Vince was killed on Operation SWIFT, a fierce battle that cost the lives of many 5th Marines. Lt. Vincent Capodanno's name lives on proudly in the hearts of the Marines and FMF Corpsmen who served with him, and his name stands proudly on their Memorial Walls alongside the many Marines and Corpsman he gave his life to save. For his selfless bravery, he was awarded the Medal of Honor, posthumously.
More information on Father Capodanno may be seen through the site for his cause for sainthood: capodannoguild.org/

Mass will be celebrated by Captain Ron Neitzke, who has served as a Chaplain for the United States Navy and as a priest in the Diocese of Joliet (currently at the tri-parishes of St. Margaret Mary, St. James the Apostle, and Sacred Heart). His service has taken him on multiple assignments, including Iraq and Djibouti overseas.

Father Phil Tighe had an impact on everyone who had the opportunity to work with him. We are grateful for the support he showed to Catholic Charities during his time with the Diocese of Raleigh. We will miss the cheerful presence he brought to everything he did, as shown in these photos when he supported our Drive Out Hunger Golf Outing in 2018.
