Mid-Atlantic Bowhunters Chapter of SCI

Mid-Atlantic Bowhunters Chapter of SCI We are a local chapter of Safari Club International. We support all legal forms of hunting with specific interest in bowhunting, and hunters rights. We support local projects involving conservationism, education and humanitarianism.

Hello Friends, Safari Club International is about protecting and promoting our Hunting and Outdoors Heritage. The pursuits of Hunting, Camping, Shooting Sports, Fishing and all the activities we outdoorsman and women cherish so much. Each year the Mid-Atlantic Bowhunters Chapter of SCI holds a fundraiser banquet. The purpose of this event is to raise money that we use to fund activities and organizations dedicated to protecting and promoting the outdoors. I am writing this on the heels of our third annual banquet, which was a very successful fundraiser. Many thanks to the dedicated people in the chapter, like Jackie Wagner, our banquet chair, and to all of the board members who supported this event. In 2011, we intend to provide funding for a local youth shooting sports program, support a disabled veterans hunting organization, continue supporting the Suburban Whitetail Management Organization and send another local teacher to the SCI American Wilderness Leadership School to learn about the outdoors, wildlife conservation and the importance of our hunting heritage. These teachers carry this message back to their classroom and share the message with their coworkers and students alike. Additionally, we will continue to provide funding to the Hunters for the Hungry program. Although our chapter is relatively young, we have established ourselves as one of the premier bowhunting chapters within SCI. On a National and International level, we like to refer to SCI like this: SCI is to Hunting, what the NRA is to our Gun Rights! No other organization fights to protect our hunting rights like SCI does – Taking the Fight straight to the doorstep of the Anti-Hunters. If you feel as strongly about hunting and protecting the right to do so, join us and become a member of this prestigious organization. Good Hunting, Brian Vanderhoof President SCI Mid-Atlantic Bowhunters Chapter

𝐔𝐏𝐃𝐀𝐓𝐄: In a shocking and unanticipated turn of events, the California trophy ban failed to fully clear the legislative process before the final deadline.

Late last night after passing on the Assembly floor, Senate Bill 1175 died before a concurrence vote could happen on the Senate floor. An earlier post made to this account in the fog of last-minute legislative action was misinformed by a report that the Senate had passed the bill when in fact, time expired before a Senate vote could take place.

The unexpected demise of SB 1175 ended the relentless effort by Senator Stern and animal rights groups to punish law abiding sportsmen and women while negatively impacting rural African communities and financially straining California’s Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Safari Club International played a key role in helping to defeat this bill from the moment it was introduced, all the way down the last minutes of the legislative session. SCI members sent more than 7,500 emails and phone calls to legislators in the weeks leading up to yesterday opposing this bill, and those efforts helped spark critical debates in committee hearings and the Assembly floor about the hypocrisy of this legislation that ultimately helped kill it.

SCI also helped coordinate and amplify key voices in Africa through testimony and strategic communication opposing this legislation. These crucial voices from the front lines of conservation in Africa included testimony from government officials like Zimbabwe’s Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Environment and the Namibian Association of Community-Based Conservation Organizations. Like SCI, the affected countries and rural communities did not take the threat of this legislation lightly, but vehemently opposed the proposed legislation at every step.

“We are pleased to see this bad legislation fail in California and take pride in knowing our members helped move the needle on it.” said W. Laird Hamberlin, SCI CEO. “Safari Club International remains vigilant in defending the freedom to hunt and promoting wildlife conservation worldwide.”

Project Spotlight: Nanzhila Basic School in Zambia

MABC has partnered with Shawn Bird, of Balla-Balla Safaris, to raise funds for the Nanzhila Basic School in Zambia.

The Nanzhila Basic School is one of the first schools started in the Southern Kafue area and is vital to the education of the local people. However lacking any real support and funds, the school became seriously run down and lacked educational materials.

Working with Balla-Balla Safaris, MABC has helped the school to raise funds to achieve two primary goals; namely, 1) to improve the school and turn it in to a place where the children would feel proud to attend and 2) to add a wildlife education section to their curriculum. We believe that education about wildlife at a basic level is the key to the protection of wildlife for future generations to come.

Game on. This one’s been in the works for awhile and now the proof is in the pictures! We are extremely proud to announce the launch of our very own deer mineral J.A. HOMEGROWN!!

We wanted to keep things simple, local, and home-grown, so we created our own blend of minerals to find the perfect mix to promote healthy herd and antler growth as well as keep deer coming back.

We deliberately put this mineral site away from the deer trails and bedding areas to truly put it to the test. 10 days and 154 trail cam pictures later, I’d say we succeeded! (Here’s a few highlights below!)

Start growing them now and keep them coming back all season long with J.A. HOMEGROWN available now exclusively at Jefferson Archery!

General information

Protecting Hunting: Safari Club International is serious about protecting hunting freedoms. In many ways, SCI is first in legislation, litigation and international advocacy for hunting. ■SCI has its own lobbyists in Washington DC, in addition to a well-staffed office on Capitol Hill. SCI is a 501(c)(4) organization that has a connected PAC. ■SCI regularly attends worldwide meetings, such as CITES, to speak up for hunting. ■SCI provides strong support for grassroots chapters who work at the state and local level to preserve hunting freedom. ■SCI partners with other organizations as well as federal and state agencies in litigation against anti-hunting initiatives. ■SCI is a leader in hunter education and wildlife conservation, preserving wildlife for the next generation of hunters. Hunter's Code of Ethics Recognizing my responsibilities as a hunter, to wildlife, to the habitat necessary to its survival, and to the future generations, and accepting those principles of superior sportsmanship promulgated by Safari Club International, I pledge: ■That I shall unfailingly conduct myself in the hunting fields so as to make a positive contribution to the welfare of both game and non-game species of wildlife, as well as to the ecosystems they occupy. ■That I shall never cease to try to improve my personal skills in woodsmanship and marksmanship, to assure humane harvesting of wildlife surpluses and to avoid waste of those precious resources. ■That I shall comply with all laws regulating wildlife harvest and shall accept my responsibility to provide all possible assistance to game-law enforcement officers. ■That I shall always, by word and behavior, reflect only credit upon the great fraternity of sportsmen-hunters, and demonstrate my abiding respect for the game, for its habitat, for my fellow hunters and those who come after me, and for the property, whether private or public, whereupon I am privileged to hunt. ■That I shall waste no opportunity to teach young people, by my personal example and otherwise, the full meaning and practice of this Hunter’s Code of Ethics.
