Change Our Mindsets to Change the System

https://imprintnews.org/opinion/changing-the-child-welfare-system-starts-with-reframing-our-view-of-families/56633

"Can we immediately achieve the outcomes we are seeking by simply changing our underlying values and attitudes toward families? Rather than waiting for sweeping legislation, could an overhaul of the child welfare system begin today?"

That's the question Vivek Sankaran asks in this article, and I think you're going to love the answer. Legislative reform is necessary, but there is much that can be done while that work is going on.

Visit ParentalRightsFoundation.org to learn more and support our work in bringing a new attitude toward families.

While conversations about statutory reforms in child welfare are important and will hopefully result in meaningful change, questions linger.

For the First Time, ‘Redeemed’ Texas Parents May Get a Second Chance

"In 2008, Child Protective Services ... placed her on a service plan.... Luna says it only became more difficult to be honest and reach out for help, because she feared her children would be taken from her."

The system that's supposed to protect children often causes greater harm. Now Texas offers some parents a second chance to correct that wrong and bring their children home again.

Visit ParentalRights.org to see how you can help continue to move things in the right direction for families like Luna's.

New legislation could open a legal pathway to reinstate once-terminated parental rights.

New Family Protections in Texas, Florida - Parental Rights

Too many families have been torn apart simply on the opinion of a single child abuse pediatrician, because the state has decided "they're the experts." A new law in Texas puts the brakes on this dangerous practice and instead calls for some common sense.

These are the kind of laws we're involved in supporting, and so very glad to see adopted. Visit parentalrights.org to learn more and support the effort to bring these needed reforms in every state.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott on Friday signed a law that will protect families from unnecessary separation on the opinion of a single child abuse pediatrician. At the same time, the Florida legislature sent its Parents’ Bill of Rights to Governor Ron DeSantis for his signature, which is expected at ...

No Evidence of Pandemic Child Abuse Surge in New York City, But Some See Other Crises For Child Welfare System

At a meeting of the New York City Council last week the child protection division admitted, that "surge in child abuse" so many feared during the COVID lockdown NEVER HAPPENED. Instead, it may have been "a very positive thing" for children to be home with their parents.

Hopefully now more eyes are open to the need to fix how we do "child welfare" -- and keep more families together.

Visit ParentalRights.org to support our work to bring needed reform to the broken system.

Reports of child abuse in NYC dropped after the coronavirus struck and have not returned to previous levels, but some warn of other crises.

Lending a Little HELP to the Senate’s Discussion - Parental Rights

Last week we were able to submit our proposed reforms to a committee that can be the first step toward effecting change in EVERY state.

Those reforms have a long way to go before we know if they are accepted (and will probably face some changes along the way), but we're excited to see what happens. Even if one of our suggested reforms gets through, it would be a positive change for the millions of families across America.

It happened so fast, coalition colleague Andrew Brown referred to it as a “fire drill.” Last Monday afternoon, our coalition was contacted by staff for the Senate’s Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee (called the HELP Committee): they were going to be discussing a bill to reauthori...

Her husband strangled her. The state gave him their daughter | Fault Lines

In Florida, mothers - and their children - continue to be punished for trying to leave an abusive situation.

The abuser in this story had a confirmed history of physically abusing his wife and ex-wife. But Florida's DCF still chose him as the "safe parent" for their 4 year old daughter. Why? Because according to DCF it would be MORE dangerous to put the daughter with her mother, a victim of abuse, than to put the daughter with a KNOWN ABUSER. It's pretty backwards, right? We have to work together to reform this broken system. Support our work today at ParentalRights.org.

The Biden administration has recently proposed universal preschool for American families, but some experts are skeptical.

What’s the case to be made against universal preschool?
This week on the EPPiC Broadcast, Jim talks with psychologist and Boston College research professor of psychology Dr. Peter Gray. Peter explains how early child education has come to emphasize test scores and academics, rather than the play and organic learning that young children need to learn and grow. Ma'Khia Bryant's Story Reveals Flaws in Foster Care System

"These moments are quick," writes Vivek Sankaran, "but how our lives unfold are often based on the decisions we make in these moments. Ma’Khia Bryant might still be alive if that caseworker had simply allowed her grandmother to take the family to a hotel."

Bryant was a teenager who made a choice. But the System failed her long before that tragic day, and if the System had made the choice to HELP Bryant and her family instead of separating them, we wouldn't be having this conversation.

These people have power over your family. But who are they?

After a special request, the EPPiC Broadcast’s 3rd Season will premiere on June 1st with a special two-part series on guardians ad litem [GAL], the people responsible for representing your child’s interests in court.

GAL’s can be a big help to your family by representing what is best for your child, but a lot of them are simply unfamiliar with the parent’s side of the issue. As one told us, “I don’t feel like I was given the best training, and...I feel very concerned about the impact of what I am doing.”

If you are a guardian ad litem, you want to use this power for good. Listen to our upcoming series to broaden your perspective and better understand what that means for each unique situation you face.
