Missouri passes parental rights in do-not-resuscitate cases

Sheryl's infant son Simon died in 2010.

Now, Sheryl crusades for "Simon's Law," because no one should be forced to watch their child die because a doctor has ordered hospital staff to "stand down."

Thanks to Sheryl's hard work, Missouri parents don't need to fear that the same thing will happen to their children.

Judge overrules state, grants parents physical custody of kids in feverish child case

Do you remember the important case we shared from Arizona? There has been a half-victorious development!

The children of this AZ couple are back with their parents, by order of the judge. While we are still waiting to see custody fully restored, this first ruling is a step in the right direction.

This case is moving in the right direction, but that doesn't happen as often as it should. To learn more about what families are going through in America, go to ParentalRights.org.

Parents whose rights were terminated can now petition courts: Champion/Moran bill restores parental rights

On May 6 a piece of legislation was signed into Minnesota law that will make way for the reunification of separated families.

This new law allows parents to directly petition the court to reestablish the parent/child relationship, while previous law said that only a county attorney could make the petition.

We're excited to see this legislation, signed by Gov. Tim Walz, and hope to see other states follow this lead.

National Conference on Child Abuse Takes a Surprising Turn - Parental Rights Foundation

When I entered the National Conference on Child Abuse and Neglect on April 24, I felt like a spy. I was properly registered and wore my name tag proudly, yet I feared I might be grossly out of place.

After all, here I was representing the rights of parents among agencies and organizations who routinely violate those rights to take children out of loving homes.

Over the three-day conference, put on by the Children’s Bureau of the Administration for Children and Families (part of the federal Department of Health and Human Services), I attended all three keynotes and more than a dozen break-out sessions.

And I was amazed by the refreshing and encouraging tone of the entire event.

After a False Accusation, Police and Child Services Forced a Family Apart for 7 Months

UPDATE: We've learned more about a story we shared with you earlier this week.

"[Adam Lowther and his wife] are suing, not just in hopes that they might recover some of their financial losses, but also to bring about institutional change. The experience has opened up the Lowthers' eyes to the inequities of the criminal justice system—and they don't want anyone to go through what they did.

'We never thought this kind of thing could ever happen,' Adam told Reason. 'We assumed that law enforcement was competent and we assumed that they obeyed the law. That was a wrong assumption, but that was our assumption.'"

Adam Lowther, a Navy veteran and nuclear deterrence expert, lost his job and spent $300,000 fighting the allegations.

Homeschoolers Of Maine

If you're in Maine, you'll need to take action today. We agree with Homeschoolers of Maine; an amendment to preserve the religious exemption will also protect the right of parents who can claim that exemption to make the best informed medical decision for their child.

Update on LD 798 - The Senate could vote on the mandatory vaccination bill tomorrow morning (May 2nd). An amendment may be presented to restore the religious exemption. Call the Senate Office between 8 - 11am tomorrow at (207) 287-1540. State your name, your town, and say you support the amended version of LD 798 restoring the religious exemption.

WALSH: The Horrifying Case That Proves Our Parental Rights Are Under Serious Attack In This Country

There is a fine line between taking a child's allegations of abuse seriously - which is absolutely necessary - and swallowing a fanciful story hook, line, and sinker.

Protecting rights while weighing the evidence preserves a necessary balance.

"Some parents really are guilty of these horrible crimes. But due process cannot go out the window. Unelected, unaccountable bureaucrats from social services cannot be empowered to act as prosecutor, judge, and jury. The rights of the parents, and the best interest of the children, must be absolutely preserved and respected at all times. But that is simply not how these cases often play out."

Indiana Is Helping Parents in Prison Keep Their Kids

“This is about families who are just trying to stay together from prison—families without a voice. Hopefully we were a voice for them.”

According to this article, thousands of American mothers and fathers have lost their children while in prison. These are not people who are convicted or accused of child abuse. They are usually in prison for minor crimes. But they lose their kids.

As Kovats, a formerly incarcerated woman, said, “We’re not hiding shanks... We just have policy proposals.”

“The right to have a judge look at this decision is not just a parent's right,” Marcus said. “It's the children's right.”

Unfortunately, in our current system, children are often removed from their family before they come before a judge.

"When the city removes a child without any court process, Ketteringham said, the city bypasses protections afforded by due process, namely legal representation."

Because of this, many children suffer unjustly.

Parental ‘bill of rights’ raises concern about Florida LGBTQ minors

“As a parent myself, I can’t imagine having my child struggling with something … and then me not being aware of that so I can help support my child.”

Two bills (HB 1171 and SB 1726) that support parents’ rights are making their way through the Florida legislature. Having attracted attention from both sides of the issue, some have raised legitimate concerns that some children will end up being deprived of some necessary privacy and personal freedom.

However, while this is a concern, we hold the conviction that in most cases the parent is the best person to help and love their child through these difficult situations.

“Allowing the district — and therefore the government — to know information about a student that a parent might not know amounts to a major government overreach.”

https://www.tampabay.com/florida-politics/2019/04/21/parental-bill-of-rights-raises-concern-about-florida-lgbtq-minors/

Legislation would establish parents’ authority to direct “the education and care” of their child, but advocates worry about consequences for LGBTQ minors, many of whom may seek mental health services before they come out to their families.

This Woman Lost Kids and Job After Being Mistaken for Drug Trafficking Suspect with Same Name

In a refreshing twist, CPS played a positive role in this horrible story of mistaken identity.

While the kids will still be affected by these event, CPS did an amazing job of getting them back to their mother quickly once Ashley was cleared.

Shouldn't it be like this all the time? Then maybe the mother (and, I confess, we) wouldn't have expected it to be a "big deal" in the first place.

Great news from Florida -- Another committee has passed the Parents' Bill of Rights.

Today HB 1171 passed through the Florida House Health and Human Services Committee. Our sincerest thanks goes to Rep. Erin Grall who is championing the parental rights issue on behalf of the families of Florida. It still has three more committees to make it through. Judiciary on the house side. Judiciary committee and Rules committee on the Senate side. You can help by going to myFloridahouse.gov and contacting the chair of the judiciary committee (Rep. Paul Renner) and asking him to allow it to be heard by next week. You can also go to FLSenate.gov and finding the chairs of the judiciary committee (Sen. David Simmons) and rules committee (Sen. Lizbeth Benacquisto) and ask them to allow it to be heard by next week in their committees. Thank you.
