binge-watched some veronica mars and rearranged the living room shelves (or cubbies?) this past weekend. current design formula: white, gray, brown, beige, black, repeat. or, alternatively—wood, glass, stone, metal, shell, repeat (+ a few plants).⁣

also in case you were wondering, “do they have sonos speakers in every room?” the answer is no. just in enough rooms to blast film scores whilst frolicking through the house (which is my favorite quarantine activity other than rearranging shelves).

a rare ‘livorno 1894’ scuba helmet ice bucket from the 70’s. made in italy in memory of jacques cousteau’s 100th birthday. my momma found this in a thrift store in the middle-of-nowhere, virginia (double swipe) and—collective gasp—left it there because “the ice bucket insert was gross.” after seeing the pic (and $3 price tag), i bullied her into going back for it. too gross for ice? yes. perfect for a scuba-ish succulent, though? big, big yes.

this past february, we were walking on a beach and i spotted a sandpiper with one leg. it was hopping around, alone, picking up bits of food where it could. i crouched down, admiring his resilience. rick wondered aloud how he was even surviving. we were basically high on our own empathy for a couple minutes—and then he lowered his other leg. apparently they basically have a landing gear compartment in their underbellies where they store limbs. we didn’t know. the stun made us laugh so hard i cried. this is why i needed to buy this vintage wooden sandpiper that @memosbungalow was selling. he was actually selling three, but this was the only one with one leg.

earth! what a big, beautiful rock. views like these are some of the best i’ve seen, and i woke up today wondering when (and if) we’ll get to explore some far away places again. but earth day had me appreciating some mother nature magic in my own backyard: blue skies, sunshine, chirping birds, a single dandelion (herb—not a weed!), and just enough of a breeze to move my thrifted wind chimes. this whole “great pause” is weird but it has some perks—lots (and lots) of time to think and learn and put my bare feet in some grass. it’s the little things.

UPDATE: masks are going to @whiskyflippn and @beedalgetty 🎉⁣

PPE but make it planty. my momma (bless her) has been hard at work sewing handmade masks for our friends and family. this insanely beautiful monstera fabric from @bluepacificfabrics made more masks than we need so i’m giving two extras away. if you could use some leafy face coverage during these crazy times, leave a comment below (or if you’ve got a stash—please share with someone who could benefit). i’ll randomly select two people on friday, april 17th. #masks4all⁣⁣

to be perfectly honest, we’re just not that into easter around here. i mean, biblically, after 14 years of christian school, i know and appreciate the meaning. however—i dislike pastel colors, i’m not that fond of baby chicks or bunnies, and jelly beans are nauseating. also out of all the cake flavors—carrot cake (aka trail mix cake) is the worst. BUT my peace lily did blossom this week (swipe) and that’s pretty easterish so that’s the content i decided to go with. happy easter, instapeeps! @ Purcellville, Virginia

truth! and i’m feeling mighty grateful for the growers and makers and finders of beautiful things like these. both the rug and flowers arrived this past week and it’s almost as though @districtloom and @beeswingfarm color coordinated their deliveries. serendipity-doo-dah, zip-a-dee-ay. anyways—please enjoy this lil rug + flower photo shoot. if you’re into orange you probably will. @ Loudoun County, Virginia

05/02/2020

when i first considered trying to make sourdough bread from scratch, i googled it (as one does) and there were so so so many rules: don’t stir with metal spoons. only use filtered water. make sure the water is X degrees. oh and you need a food scale, a proofing basket, and a dutch oven. um that’s stressful—so i just decided to try making imperfect bread instead. using loose measurements and only equipment i already had, i was eventually able (and overjoyed) to make this extremely flawed but edible sourdough loaf.⁣

so if you’re home, bored, and thinking about bread making or gardening or painting or houseplanting then a fun idea is to wing it a bit because perfection will just kill all of your curiosities before they’re off the ground.⁣

ps also if you have kids i get you’re not bored but i’d argue that all of those activities 1,000% count as homeschool.

fellow sufferers already know—but the remedy for motion sickness is the same whether you’re driving, boating, flying, or even hammocking: focus on a steady point. in other words...when things are most wobbly—fixate on what’s stable.⁣

sooo some constants i’m fixating (hard) on while life feels all shaky: the sun is still setting, stars are rotating, birds are chirping, buds are blooming, and creeks are babbling (can vouch for this as i slipped into one yesterday).⁣

many things are cancelled, how great that the first day of spring is not. happy quarantequinox (™️) everyone!

a quick departure from my usual posts to get my two cents in...⁣

i’m not going to outline all the coronavirus statistics and numbers because they’re all very available to everyone. yet—people are still going out to group dinners, hosting showers, getting pedicures, and dancing at their local breweries.⁣

my heart hurts for small businesses but we skipped over “ways to support community health and hospital resources” posts to “ways to support local business owners” posts. both are important—the former is more.⁣

this is spreading by pre-symptomatic transmission. it is circulating now.⁣

stay home if you’re sick. stay home if you’re not sick. stay home so that the people that absolutely have to work are less exposed. stay home even if your local bars say they’re using lysol wipes and washing hands. stay home despite deb from that one facebook group saying it’s a hoax.⁣

i’m all for the avoidance of panic but not at the expense of facts and preparedness. there are 398,080 people in loudoun county and 291 hospital beds. do that math in your own local area. the time to cancel your plans was yesterday, friends.

this ceramic jug is hefty, sturdy, weathered, thick, wonderfully imperfect, and a hell of a thrift find. only $14 at my local salvation army. can you guess what i did when i saw it? i gasped. audibly. highly recommend prioritizing quality materials over a specific decor style. the latter is just far too limiting.

this corner is a “throw spaghetti at the wall” kind of corner. and by spaghetti i mean random decor. it’s not really planned out with great intention but—it sticks. glass and metal table is from craigslist. brass bowl and marble eggs are thrifted. the basket (to hold fresh towels) is, too. you can swipe to see the lil hand-painted mirrors and ceramic oil lamp (originally from sweden! and originally $75 USD!) in the wild. praised be the travelers who donate their worldly treasures. @ Purcellville, Virginia

a kitchen corner with a whole lotta thrift find refreshes: busty (who needs an official name), a lil glass jug for plant props, a quintessential glass storage container, and the start of a salt / pepper wooden grinder collection that my husband is mildly concerned about. the tiny fruit oil painting is thrifted too but alas — no before photo.

swipe to see them all in the wild. oh and — plz note that the glass jug that i’m using for the pothos cuttings is slightly different than the one pictured (i forgot a pic of mine). BUT it’s super similar annnd this one is still available at the blue ridge thrift in purcellville (red tags on sale today so actual price is cheaper). go snag you a little propagation jug or bud vase! @ Loudoun County, Virginia

sometimes i wonder if the popularity of minimalist decor was born of necessity—super simplified spaces to counteract busy lives and hectic schedules. but i think maximalist decor, in its own way, is a badge of slow living. it’s intentional, curated, and tells little stories about where we’ve been, who we are, and what we like. adding those layers to a space? it can’t really be rushed. i’ve tried. so i will just have to wait patiently to cross paths with the treasures i’ll finish filling these walls with.

mother nature works some wonders with color…but i’m partial to the teasel pods, the dried hydrangeas, the crystals, and the stone. got an empty cloche or a vacant vase? go on a walk with some garden shears. added bonus—you’ll scare away potential kidnappers.

1⁣ | i enjoy the creative process of building a space that’s as layered and as complex and as nuanced as i am. our homes don’t have to neatly fit into one design style / category. we rarely do. i’m getting weird with it. join me. ⁣ ⁣ 2⁣ | i am a staunch advocate of the heirloom and i needed a space to preach. hoarding your ancestor’s junk in boxes? not so great. weaving pieces that tell a story or ground you in your cultural history into your everyday spaces? very great. interact with those artifacts. they existentially matter.⁣ ⁣ 3⁣ | i want to dispel thrift myths. it’s not just a josie-grossy junkyard. if you cast a wide enough net, there are many high-quality, brand-name, like-new, and ready-to-use items that can be purchased for far less money and with far less waste. i’ll prove it.⁣ ⁣ 4 | it’s an exercise in slow living. many of our preferences are dictated by convenience but there is no hurry in thrifting (or houseplanting). it’s meditative. it demands mindfulness. it hones attentiveness. nurturing these traits is basically my tiny act of rebellion.⁣ ⁣ 5⁣ | annnd lastly, connection. i work from home so this all helps me avoid turning into a bonafide recluse. consider your engagement a charitable donation. i’m grateful. thank you for being here. let’s keep sharing thoughts and having conversations, k?
