Short Hill Historical Society

Short Hill Historical Society A non-profit organization dedicated to discover, protect, and restore the history of the Short Hill region in western Loudoun County, Virginia.

The Short Hill Historical Society is a non-profit organization dedicating to restoring and preserving historic landmarks in the Short Hill region. It was founded in 1976 to save the Old Stone School, formerly known as the Locust Grove Academy, from being torn down. The charter, written in 1976, is to restore and preserve the Old Stone School and other historic landmarks in the area. Originally called the Hillsboro Community Association (Friends of the Old Stone School), the organization changed its name to the Short Hill Historical Society in 1976. After 40 years focused on the Old Stone School--saving it from demolition and keeping its doors open--the organization is turning to restore and preserve other historic landmarks in the area. You can support these efforts with a donation and by volunteering. The Old Stone School was one of the first public schools in Loudoun County, and classes were held at this historic building from 1874 through 1966 when the Hillsboro Elementary School opened. After sitting vacant for 10 years, a decision was made to demolish the building. A group of former students and local residents joined together to save the historic building, and work to preserve and restore it along with other historical landmarks in the area.

We are sad to announce the loss of a founding member of the Short Hill Historical Society, Belle Ware. Over 40 years ago, she and her mother, along with several others, joined together to form the Hillsboro Community Association (now the Short Hill Historical Society) and saved the Old Stone School from being demolished. Belle was dedicated to helping preserve the history and sense of community for our area through her service on our board, as a member of the Hillsboro Town Council, as a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and through her efforts with the Hillsboro United Methodist Church. One of the things she dearly loved was our Christmas in Hillsboro Historic Homes Tour. She had a gift for making homes on this tour look absolutely breathtaking. She dearly loved her family and friends. She was the heart and soul of our community, making sure all felt welcome and included. She was an inspiration to all who knew her, and we will miss her with all our hearts.

Meet Becky Ottinger, our guest speaker for the August 30 History Talks, Trips, and Treasures! After 32 years, the last 25 years at Loudoun County High School, she retired from teaching government, economics, and AP American history. She is the Vice President of the Loudoun Education Foundation and is a past president and now historian of The Ladies Board of Inova Loudoun Hospital, Leesburg, VA. Her volunteerism has extended to work at the Thomas Balch Library for more than 20 years where she mainly processes collections which are preserved in the archives of the library. Her love of history and old houses has led her to do research on the buildings in Hillsboro...seeking to understand the history of the small community through the architecture and purpose of the buildings as well as the changes made over time. This will be the focus of her talk on August 30. Make sure to register for this free event: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/30e044ba9ad29aa8-history1

The full moon on June 28. According to The Old Farmer's Almanac "The June Full Moon is called the Full Strawberry Moon. This Full Moon got its name from the Algonquin tribes who knew it as a signal to gather the ripening fruit of wild strawberries. It has also been known as the Honey Moon, Mead Moon, and the Full Rose Moon in Europe." Read more about moon names: https://www.almanac.com/content/full-moon-june
