A third disrupted year can only strain Americans’ ties to traditional public schools

"Mounting evidence suggests that parents are becoming more likely not just to say they support school choice, but to actively choose an alternative to their local public school"

This is an excellent read, and further reinforces why educational freedom is critical. Children and parents need options in their education.

In the early days of the pandemic, I was dismissive of “new normal” talk about Covid’s long-term impact on schooling. There was good reason for skepticism. Americans may hold in low regard public education at large, but we have long demonstrated a deep and abiding fondness for the schools that...

“For the People Act” Still Bad “For the People”

The Senate is getting ready to vote to restrict your freedom of speech. We need you to contact them and tell them “No.” This bill is not “for the people.” It violates free speech, limits freedom of association, and hampers the ability of organizations like HSLDA Action to work for you.

https://hsldaaction.org/post/for-the-people-act-still-bad-for-the-people

S. 1 is an 800-page bill that directly attacks your freedom of speech. This sweeping bill would dangerously intrude on non-profit speech.

On Wednesday evening, President Biden made his first address to a Joint Session of Congress. During this speech he unveiled his "American Families Plan" which among other things would institute universal pre-K funding.

This is hardly a new idea, and there is a lot we want to unpack for you all. Our team is going to be doing some analysis on this plan and its implications for homeschooling over the next few weeks. Keep your eyes peeled for that.

Mike Farris, President and CEO of Alliance Defending Freedom did a phenomenal interview with our Generation Joshua Podcast team.

He is a hero of the homeschool movement, Chairman of HSLDA Action's board, and staunch defender and advocate for freedom in our nation today. He has some very insightful things to say about where we have come from as a movement, the world we find ourselves in today, and how we should proceed forward.

Give it a listen!

This week on The GenJ Podcast, we have a powerful conversation with the president and CEO of Alliance Defending Freedom (and GenJ founder) Michael Farris!

Mike is a constitutional scholar, an advocate for freedom, and a man of deep faith. He founded HSLDA and led the charge to legalize homeschooling in the United States in the 1980s.

Since then, his work has included starting Patrick Henry College, arguing landmark cases in front of the United States Supreme Court, and much more.

This episode contains inspiring stories and helpful analysis of the fight to preserve freedom in the United States today.

The US Senate will soon be voting on H.R. 1 entitled, "For the People Act." It is anything but.

This sweeping bill would overhaul the current election system by implementing a plethora of heavy-handed “reforms” from the federal government, including many controversial measures. But, most concerning to us here at HSLDA Action, H.R. 1 would affect your freedom of speech.

Please read our staff's analysis on the very real impacts to your freedom of speech and that of non-profit organizations across the country, including HSLDA Action.

Bill Lets 11-Year-Olds Make Medical Decisions. Without Telling Parents.

Tell Congress to keep students safe.

The District of Columbia thinks children as young as 11 years old should make medical decisions without their parents’ consent—and the district has passed a bill to make this belief a reality. If the bill isn’t stopped by Congress, other states may soon follow the district’s example.

Contact your elected officials through our Legislative Action Center to help protect students today! https://hslda.org/legal/legislation?vvsrc=/campaigns/77926/respond
For more information on this situation, read an article by HSLDA Action's Federal Relations Liaison, Maggie McKneely.

A District of Columbia bill would keep medical information from children’s parents and family physicians. Congress has 30 days to change that.

Today is inauguration day. Four years ago began a period of distinctly positive educational freedom policy on the federal level. Time will tell what the incoming administration’s policies will be. However, today, no matter your political persuasion, should not be a day where we give into fear. We should take this moment to appreciate the marvel that is the peaceful transition of power in our special country.

As homeschoolers, we of all people should be confident in the days ahead. We have experienced political adversity, and we have overcome it time and time again. We have done this by being active and engaged citizens. While many have concerns about President Biden’s policy stances towards homeschooling, we here at HSLDA Action want to encourage you that you can have great confidence and hope. The future of homeschooling rests in the hands of the engaged citizens of this country, namely you. And we are here to help and assist in ensuring that homeschooling remains and becomes even more free in the coming days.

We pray for this new administration’s success in keeping America a secure, free, and prosperous place for the next generation.

Homeschoolers: Civics in Action 2020

"Homeschoolers are active citizens who are willing to invest in the civic process. This year many homeschoolers stepped up to the plate, and I am thankful for them because I deeply believe that their engagement in the process is critical for the future of our nation."

Our PAC Director, Jeremiah Lorrig shared his thoughts on the election, what it means, and how homeschooler's impacted the results in a recent article for HSLDA. Take a look: https://hslda.org/post/homeschoolers-civics-in-action-2020

Here’s a quick highlight of some of the homeschool moms, dads, and grads who ran for office and students who got experience in real-life civics.

It’s that time of year when people decorate their yards with pumpkins, mums, spooky Halloween things, and campaign signs! In less than a week, our Student Action Teams will be deploying to neighborhoods around the country, knocking on doors and making phone calls to help get out the vote. SATs teach students about the election process while helping to elect those candidates who support the values HSLDA Action stands for.

10/05/2020

Having legislators on Capitol Hill who already understand the importance of school choice and educational freedom is so important. It opens doors and provides the opportunity to make changes that we might otherwise not have. Recently, we got news that once again proved this to be true.

For several years, Michigan and Minnesota have been denying social security benefits to certain eligible homeschool students. Although we had several cases pending, I brought the issue to two homeschool-friendly Congressmen, Reps. Walberg and Emmer, in the hopes they could get the problem fixed faster than the court system. Because they know HSLDA Action and have experience homeschooling themselves, they immediately understood the injustice of the problem and took action. Last week, we were notified that that problem has now been resolved - Michigan and Minnesota each changed their laws regarding social security benefits to make the system more fair for homeschoolers. Without those legislators' willingness to get involved, such a success wouldn't have been possible. So thank you to them, but also to all of you who campaign and vote for pro-school choice candidates.

The presidential debate topics for tonight were just announced. Can you guess which topic wasn’t actually on the list?

In all seriousness, while all the released topics are timely and important, we believe that the topic of education is one that strikes very close to home on a daily basis for the majority of Americans. We hope to see it come up tonight.

What are you hoping to find out more about?

This weekend saw the nomination of Amy Coney Barrett and has been yet another reminder that elections have consequences. Through Supreme Court appointments, the President and senators have the ability to affect public policy for decades to come. Just this year alone, the Court issued decisions involving life, school choice, and parental rights.

Regardless of what political side you hail from, Ruth Bader Ginsburg had an enormous impact on American politics. Her successor will too, because that’s the nature of the Supreme Court. So in case you were looking for a sign to vote in this election (and none of the other reminders you’ve been bombarded with via email and social media have done the trick) here it is. Because your vote matters.

Have you ever gone to vote and realized when you get there that there are a bunch of things you didn’t know were on the ballot? You’re not alone.

We know… You are sick of being reminded to register to vote. We admit it, we were one of those guilty parties that has been bombarding you with that message. But we intend to be more helpful. This handy resource helps you look up exactly what’s going to be on your ballot so you can do your research ahead of time and determine what you think about each candidate and issue. https://ballotpedia.org/Sample_Ballot_Lookup

From Maggie McKneely on our Capitol Hill team:

“It’s September, which means Congress is back in DC after their month-long August recess! Usually that means I’d be spending much of my time as lobbyist people with people at their offices, or popular Capitol Hill haunt Ebenezer’s Coffeehouse. But 2020 being what it is, most of those meetings are now online via Zoom or over the phone. The work to protect and advocate for education freedom continues in spite of that though, as Congress works hard to figure out solutions to the state of education in America during COVID. (I still need my coffee though.)”

A couple days ago, we encouraged everyone to register to vote. But that is only the first step on the road to voting. The next step is ensuring that you know where, or how to vote. You can find your polling location by visiting: https://www.vote.org/polling-place-locator/

As you are no doubt aware, this year especially, many states have offered additional options for mail-in voting due to COVID-19 concerns. Every state is different, so to find out more about your options, and what your state is doing to ensure the timely, and secure counting of mail-in ballots go to: https://www.usa.gov/absentee-voting

We want to help empower people to be active and engaged citizens who can fight for what they believe. The most basic, most fundamental, and most undervalued way to do this is voting.

According to the National Census Bureau, less than half of voting age Americans participated in the 2018 elections. We want to ensure that as many people as possible know how to take part in this most basic civic duty.

Take the first step today and register to vote. You can find out how to do this by simply going to vote.gov

If you are already registered, make sure that your registration has our current information: https://www.usa.gov/confirm-voter-registration
