Public Libraries Are Guiding Companies To Information They Need In Coronavirus Crisis

Libraries - from community libraries in remote rural areas of Central America to public libraries in US major metros - play a critical role in information access during the pandemic. Riecken Community Libraries have been trusted resources for potentially life-saving information in Honduras and Guatemala where basic necessities and medical care are scarce, and as the US continues to deal with the impact "Libraries will play a crucial part in their community’s recovery and are poised to provide assistance for businesses and individuals alike..."

As if the disastrous impacts of Hurricane Eta in Central America were not enough, Hurricane Iota followed causing further damage to the region. Riecken La Libertad Community Library was completely flooded by the resulting overflow of Rio Motagua. In order to re-open, it is in need of funding to replace destroyed books, repair/replace furniture and computer equipment, and repair walls, flooring and infrastructure. Hurricane Eta and the flooding created has damaged one of Riecken’s 65 community libraries. La Libertad is on the coast in Guatemala. Now the entire region has been cut off. We are happy we did not hear of any injuries.

As a result of Hurricane Eta, the Rio Motagua, has overflowed and flooded an area with 500 homes as well as completely inundated the Riecken Biblioteca la Libertad. We are hoping for the safety of all in the area and will be assessing damage to the libraries affected over the coming days.

Riecken Community Libraries foster inclusion and development of girls and women in communities where they are often marginalized. Participation in programs and trainings provide ways to develop leadership and critical thinking skills necessary for future opportunities.
In the Namasigue Riecken Library in Honduras, teenage girls train others in the community about safe use of the Internet and digital privacy, while in Guatemala, teens hold train-the-trainer sessions on how to become debate judges. #criticalthinking #internetsafety #leadershipdevelopment

To help ease the stress and anxiety resulting from the COVID-19 quarantine, the Riecken Community Library “Nueva Visión” in La Guacamaya (Yoro, Honduras) started a garden to help with widespread food shortage and promote solidarity in managing through these difficult times. Women leaders from 11 neighborhoods organized a committee to manage humanitarian aid to those experiencing food insecurity. Working together, 30 families are involved in working the garden and cooking meals to share using its produce.

Even though Riecken Community Libraries are closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it has not kept our staff from working remotely to keep our library communities informed. They are preparing for when they can safely open once again, and creatively working to share our message. Check out this short video recently shared with our community at an online update meeting!

On July 17th, donors, funding partners, Riecken board members, staff and guests from Honduras and Guatemala enjoyed our very first online annual update meeting! Nearly forty attendees heard about current news of COVID-19 pandemic in Honduras and Guatemala, how it is affecting the Riecken Community Libraries network and our programs. Creative staff and community members collaborated - remotely - to deliver videos about our work and two of our library communities. For over 90 minutes, guests were able to “visit” with those who make Riecken Community Libraries so successful on a daily basis.

Widespread unemployment, curfews and day-to-day subsistence living make COVID-19 shutdowns extremely difficult for much of Honduras and Guatemala. Though technically closed, Riecken Community Libraries have taken leadership roles in the crisis, with dedicated librarians and volunteers on the front lines keeping information and resources flowing.

La Libertad Library in Comayagua, Honduras, led by its librarian, Melvil, and library volunteers, has been key to the coordination of food supplies in the municipality – sorting, organizing and making deliveries to those who need it most.

Will you help keep the flow of information clear and up-to-date by helping us purchase laptops with collaborative apps and tools for staff who are relaying updates and directives working from home.

UPDATE:
The Guatemalan president, Alejandro Giammattei, has just declared a state of calamity and a general quarantine for the nation, beginning at midnight tonight and lasting until midnight on March 31st. Honduras is also operating under near lock-down directives from its President Juan Orlando Hernandez for a one-week period.

To help mitigate the spread of the corona virus and protect our communities, volunteers and staff members, Riecken Community Libraries in Honduras and Guatemala have closed for thirty days. As Riecken libraries are generally community hubs where many towns people congregate, the library staff will do their best to disseminate information to keep the libraries informed and in contact with each other, and to provide updates to the community - while working from home.

International Mother Language Day, initiated by UNESCO is observed on February 21 to promote peace and multilingualism across the universe and to preserve all mother languages. Riecken Community Libraries actively promotes the preservation of cultural traditions and Indigenous languages spoken by members of the communities they serve. Riecken Library communities in Guatemala wrote, illustrated and produced bi-lingual books (Spanish and Maya dialect Indigenous to the area) based on stories told in the oral tradition by village elders.
You can purchase one of them, "Awakening of a Town" at https://www.amazon.com/Awakening-Town-English-Maya-Bilingual/dp/1096849453/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1582168255&sr=1-3

Last week, The Riecken Community Library in Parramos inaugurated its new board members, including two Indigenous women from the Kaqchikel community. Festivities celebrated a new start for this library and a strong desire to serve the community. Local support was evident in the large gathering and the new Mayor. Many thanks to Jaime Camposeco, the program officer in Guatemala, for his perseverance in bringing new life to this library!

The newly elected mayor of Parramos then came to the library for a meeting and the signing of a new municipal/Riecken agreement. The mayor is very interested in a successful community library. Images attached.

An inauguration party is planned for this Monday.

General information

The Riecken model, born out of results-oriented entrepreneurship rather than charity, leverages the immeasurable power of community participation as a catalyst for growth. Each community's active involvement is crucial to its library's success. In exchange, the residents of the community see the potential for their lives to transform exponentially. Our strength is in our ability to identify possibility - and turn it into reality.
